The Penguin, the Colin Farrell spinoff of Matt Reeves’s The Batman, is set to begin filming.

(FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN THE FILM, SPOILERS AHEAD!)

The HBO Max TV series focusing on Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot’s rise to power goes before cameras June 15. The news comes shortly after WarnerMedia confirmed that a sequel to the Robert Pattinson box office hit has received the green light.

Farrell went on record to say, “I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”

The Penguin – What Can We Expect and What Have We Seen Before?

The production listing that confirmed the start date only offered a brief synopsis. The show is to focus on Cobblepot’s rise in the underworld that supposedly leads up to the events of The Batman. The film debuted Farrell’s version of Penguin as Carmine Falcone’s lieutenant in his criminal empire. He was also in charge of “44 Below,” the secret hideaway within the Iceberg Lounge, frequented by corrupt city officials.  After The Riddler (Paul Dano) exposed Falcone’s recent murder of one of his employees, Batman and GCPD arrested him. But the psychopath executed Falcone on the steps of his own club before he could be processed. Following the flood of Gotham as Riddler’s ultimate revenge on the corrupt bureaucracy, Oswald was last seen overlooking the city from what was now his Iceberg Lounge. If the synopsis of the upcoming series is true, we could be looking at a prequel series. It will also allow the exploration into this new version of Gotham City.

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in 1941, this is The Penguin’s first solo series, but Farrell is the fourth actor to portray the villain in a live-action setting. The character has had an interesting evolution on both the big screen and small screen. He was first embodied by Burgess Meredith in the 1966 Batman ABC series starring Adam West. Meredith’s look was heavily influenced by the source material, from the tuxedo and umbrella weaponry, to his trademark cigarette holder and “squawk” when speaking. Tim Burton took him in a dark, deformed direction in 1992’s Batman Returns with Danny DeVito under the makeup. Oswald returned to TV in the FOX prequel series, Gotham, with Robin Lord Taylor as a series regular for its five year run. In that series, Oswald Cobblepot was also a subordinate under Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Fish Mooney until he fed information to the police and then maimed by Mooney, leaving him with a permanent limp that contributed to his “Penguin” moniker.

No word yet as to further casting or release date. More will be revealed as it develops.

Nicolas Cage wants in on The Batman sequel as an eggs-tremely off-the-wall antagonist.

The Academy Award Winner recently attended the LA premiere of The Bearable Weight Of Massive Talent. On the red carpet, he voiced interest in taking part in the new Robert Pattinson-led franchise, which he had yet to see. “[I’ve been] thinking about this [and] I think I want to have a go at Egghead. I could make him absolutely terrifying. And I have a concept for Egghead. So let them know over at Warner Bros. I’m down for Egghead.”

Nicolas Cage as Egghead… Who?!?

Egghead was a made-for-TV villain for the infamous 1966 Batman televisions series starring Adam West. He was portrayed by horror legend Vincent Price, who donned an oversized bald cap and white-and-yellow suits. The self-professed criminal genius’ oddball crimes always circled around egg-related items of value and employed egg-inspired gimmicks and tricks. To his credit, however, he proved brilliant enough to deduce Bruce Wayne was Batman. He appeared in several episodes during the show’s second and third seasons.

After the show’s cancellation, Egghead was seen through occasional cameos in different media. He was prominently featured in Adam West-led animated films Batman: Return of The Caped Crusaders and Batman Vs. Two-Face. Both, however, were in nonspeaking appearances. In the comics, meanwhile, he did not receive relevant attention until Batman: The Brave and The Bold #16. It was in this issue that his real name was revealed to be Edgar Head. He was last seen in Gotham Academy #14 as “Professor Egghead.” However, to date, there has not been a definitive origin for the character.

If this does happen, this won’t be the first comic book character Cage will have tackled. He was Ghost Rider in two movies, he portrayed Big Daddy alongside Chloe Grace Moretz’s Hit-Girl in 2010’s Kick-Ass, and he also voiced Superman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies and “Spider-Man Noir” in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Enter The Spider-Verse.

To date, The Batman has dominated the box office for the third week in a row with a domestic total of $273.8 million.

HBO Max is giving DC’s movie history the five-star treatment with a three-part documentary event.

Co-directed and produced by Academy Award winner Leslie Iwerks, the as-yet-untitled project will focus on DC Entertainment’s pop culture impact. DC Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee elaborates, “DC has a rich legacy of over 80 years of iconic ]storytelling. We] are so excited to dive into this history and bring fans along this amazing journey.”

HBO Max DC Docuseries – Who’s Involved and What To Expect?

Lee does not exaggerate when he remarks on this journey being amazing. From the Golden Age of Comics ushered in with Superman, to the Adam West and Christopher Reeve eras on the small and large screen, to record-setting shows like the ten seasons of Smallville, the DCAU beginning with Batman: The Animated Series, Stephen Amell’s take on Green Arrow spawning a shared TV universe, Zac Snyder’s Man of Steel bringing a new Superman to theaters in the form of Henry Cavill, hard-hitting mature shows such as Lucifer and Titans… Iwerks has a plethora of milestones to cover. The only other documentary to cover DC’s history was 2012’s The Secret Origin of DC Comics. With more elbow room to work with, Leslie can easily surpass both previous efforts and expectations.

Iwerk’s resume includes 2007’s The Pixar Story, of which she was director, producer, editor, and writer. On the upcoming project, Iwerk concedes, “The DC Universe is vast, rich and incredibly cool, and we’re looking forward to bringing the untold stories of the characters, artists, and storytellers to life in a fresh new way.”

Iwerk’s co-director Mark Catalena adds, “The geeks have inherited the earth. By revealing the personal inspirations from those who have crafted this expansive universe, we hope viewers will understand why this modern mythology matters so much [to people.”] Catalena also worked with Leslie on The Imagineering Story.

Although there is no working title available or release date, HBO Max did release this logline to describe the project:

Produced by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television in association with Warner Horizon, DC, Berlanti Productions and Iwerks and Co., the documentary seires takes an unprecedented look at the enduring and influential legacy of DC, allowing fans to rediscover the universe of characters, as well as the iconic comic book company’s origins, its evolution and its nearly inine-decade cultural impact across every artistic medium.

More information will be released as it becomes available.

RIP Lyle Waggoner.

Whether he shared the stage with an ensemble, or held his own as an All-American sidekick, Lyle Waggoner was a career television man. This week’s sad news of Lyle’s passing has fans refelecting on the actor’s amazing legacy. Military radio operator; 70’s heartthrob, TV celebrity, and believe it or not, Lyle almost became the Batman!

One Step At A Time

Before I jump ahead too quickly, let’s track the beginnings of Lyle’s amazing resumé. Born April 13, 1935 this Kansas City boy’s acting career began, not dark and brooding – as one would expect from a Batman candidate – but with slapstick hilarity. Lyle made his first big splash on the smash sketch comedy series The_Carol_Burnett_Show. Lyle juggled a multitude of hats alongside this talented ensemble. But Waggoner’s debonair good looks were always prominent in the silly characters he portrayed. Especially as the self absorbed Mr. Handsome, whom Burnett would swoon and faint over repeatedly.

A Man Of Action!

Waggoner quickly became a household face. Being recognizable launched him into a playing military man Steve Trevor on the groundbreaking television series adaptation of Wonder Woman. With that classic square jaw and real life military experience, LW embodied the perfect counterpart for the Amazonian Goddess.

Holy Different Batman, Batman!

Allow me to lift the veil if you will. Between our safe, comfortable living rooms, and the dog eat dog world of network acting auditions. Here, away from the adoring eyes of America’s housewives, Lyle Waggoner’s career almost took a much different shape. Few fans know how quantum-ly close LW was to becoming the Caped Crusader! It’s 1964. Network giant ABC secretly announces the role for a  Batman television show. Lyle auditions and is soon neck and neck with actor Adam West. The race for the role is so close the casting exec’s demand a lengthy screentest be filmed. Finally, the decision is made. Lyle loses the cowl to West, but quickly rebounds with the Steve Trevor gig. Oh, but how I would kill to see that old screentest footage! Who knows? Perhaps Lyle’s Batman can be found somewhere out there in the DC Multiverse.

Fan-Approved!

Since Waggoner’s passing, stories abound of his warm, down to earth nature. In her memoirs, Burnett speaks kindly of Lyle spending an hour a day to answer fan mail. And look at the glow on Wonder Woman star Lynda_Carter as the two actors share some down time

Bat-Cruise?

No one can deny that Waggoner is perpetually dashing. This air of wealth would have easily made for a believable Bruce Wayne. And yet, if Lyle were cast as Batman, we might miss all of the depth he brought to Steve Trevor. Nonetheless, long after Wonder Woman, Lyle’s magnetism continued to pay off. Dozens of guest appearances on America’s most cherished television shows are testament to the actor’s professionalism and tremendous versatility.

Lyle Wesley Waggoner passed on March 17, 2020 in Westlake Village, California. He was 84.

Following AT&T’s acquisition of Time Warner, it was announced that the company – now branded as ‘WarnerMedia’ – is taking part in a broad diversity and inclusion initiative that includes DC (Entertainment and Films), Warner Bros., Turner, and HBO.

WarnerMedia recently released a statement saying the following:

“WarnerMedia companies, Warner Bros., HBO and Turner, have long been committed to diversity and inclusion as moral and business imperatives.  It is essential that our content and creative partners reflect the diversity of our society and the world around us.  Together with other production companies, networks, guilds, unions, talent agencies and others in the industry, we all must ensure there is greater inclusion of women, people of color, the LGBTQ+ community, those with disabilities and other underrepresented groups in greater numbers both in front of and behind the camera.  For our part, WarnerMedia pledges to use our best efforts to ensure that diverse actors and crew members are considered for film, television and other projects, and to work with directors and producers who also seek to promote greater diversity and inclusion in our industry.  To that end, in the early stages of the production process, we will engage with our writers, producers and directors to create a plan for implementing this commitment to diversity and inclusion on our projects, with goal of providing opportunities for individuals from under-represented groups at all levels.  And, we will issue an annual report on our progress.  the companies of WarnerMedia have a historic and proven commitment to diversity and inclusion.  But there is much more we can do, and we believe real progress can be made in the industry.  We will work with our partners in the entertainment community to make this commitment a reality.”

Kevin Tsujihara, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. added:

“I’m proud that Warner Bros., and our sister companies HBO and Turner, are willing to state unequivocally that this is where we stand on diversity and inclusion.  Our policy commits us to taking concrete action to further our goals, to measure the outcomes and to share the results publicly.  I’m also thrilled that we were able to work with Michael B Jordan to craft a meaningful policy and framework that will apply to all of our productions, across all of our divisions, going forward.”

The new film, Just Mercy, staring Michael B. Jordan and directed by Destin Daniel-Cretton will be the first film distributed by Warner Bros. and WarnerMedia to be officially released under these new guidelines.

It’s no secret that Zack Snyder’s vision for the DCEU contained images and scenes that were darker than the superhero genre was used to.  This is not only evident in movies like Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice but also in a few of the concept art paintings for Justice League especially in the final fight scene between the united Justice League and Steppenwolf.  Evidence has surfaced in some newly released VFX reels courtesy of Blind LTD, the studio that did the visual effects on the film.

These newly released photos show a drastically different version from the Joss Whedon reshoots and show that the movie was drastically altered and completely different than the vision that was put to film by Zack Snyder.  Reports from Storyboard artist, Jay Oliva also confirmed that the story Whedon told was different from the one that Snyder originally worked on, despite claims from Warner Bros that Whedon was doing was finish Snyder’s vision.

Recently, two special effect reels where posted to the Twitter from DCEUnited which will undoubtedly fuel the fire that Whedon and Warner Bros knowingly changed Justice League completely and “fan the flames” of those calling for a “Snyder Cut” release of the Justice League film.  One video shows a compilation of various effects shots of an inverted pyramid in a desolated landscape and more.  The second video, considerably shorter, shows the pyramid in more detail in a desolated part of Earth.

These videos are very similar to the concept art created by artist Christian Lorenz Scheurer.  They show the villain, Steppenwolf, using the Motherboxes he gathered throughout the movie to begin the transformation of Earth into what would resemble his homeworld, Apokalips.

These scenes would have matched the now even more out of place, Knightmare sequence of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.  These videos also add more evidence that this battle in an Apokalips-esque atmosphere had made it well beyond pre-production and a “Snyder Cut” of Justice League might be complete.

Either coincidence or fact, these videos further push the cries from fans to “RELEASE THE SNYDER CUT” as a special edition of Justice League, giving the fans the movie they were expecting and deserve

DECU fans…the wait is over.  Matt Reeves has turned in the first part of his new script for the upcoming film, The Batman.  The interesting thing about Reeves’ script is that it focuses on a young Batman instead of the one we have been introduced to in movies like Batman v Superman and Justice League.  This could mean that the rumors have been true all along and that Ben Affleck is indeed out as Bruce Wayne.

There is no doubt that the cloud of uncertainty about The Batman has been present for a while now with Ben Affleck out as the roles of director, writer, producer, and star of the film.  Affleck dropping out paved the way for Reeve’s to take over.

Ben Affleck has responded to the rumors of his exit from the role of Batman many times by reassuring DC fans that he is committed to the role and has said numerous times that it’s the role of a lifetime.

At SDCC, Affleck addressed his exit rumors by saying:

“Batman is the coolest f*cking part in any universe-DC, Marvel-it’s incredible and I”m so thrilled to do it…I know there’s this misconception that because I didn’t direct it wasn’t enthusiastic about it; it’s f*cking amazing…and with Matt Reeves doing it, it’s like I’d be a f*cking ape on the ground for Matt Reeves-nevermind being Batman! It’s incredible! So I’m really blown away and excited and it’s a great time in the DC Universe…I’m really excited to be Batman”

Months later during the promotional tour for Justice League, Affleck “flip-flopped” by saying:

“you don’t don this forever”

Over the Memorial Day Weekend, Reeves turned in the first part of his script, which is a huge step in the right direction for the solo Batman flick.  Reports have circulated that The Batman will be the first of another trilogy, so the return of Affleck as Batman overall is not ruled out; he just won’t be Batman for this movie.

For some of the older readers of our site, our first exposure to the DC universe may have been the original Batman television show. The intro itself featured still images that would sometimes move around like what you would expect from a motion comic. Over these images the iconic intro song by Neal Hefti would be playing as Batman and Robin would run toward the camera, ride around in the Batmobile, and throw all manner of villains across the room.

Recently blogger Al Bigley recently posted on his blog a collection of animation cells and artwork from the intros’ creator, Lee Mishkin. You can see original pencils and cells along with an inside look at how the work develop throughout its inception. I could continue to go on and on about how cool these pieces of history are but it’s much better to visit the site for yourself by clicking here.
