It’s no secret that Brian Michael Bendis’ run on Legion of Super-Heroes didn’t go over well.  As a matter of fact, nothing he introduced while handling Superman and Legion of Super-Heroes has had lasting impact out side of the aging of Jon Kent and the establishment of the United Planets in contemporary times.  Bendis himself abandoned the “modern” relationship between Lois and Clark and Superman’s identity was put back in the box during the Dawn of DC publishing initiative.  Currently, in Jeremy Adams’ Green Lantern the status quo of the United Planets is coming under fire and it appears that the classic Legion of Super-Heroes, or a version of them, is returning to continuity.

This version known to fans as the “Retro-boot” Legion can be seen on the cover of the forthcoming Justice Society of America #11.  Due out on July 24, 2024, this Legion can be seen fighting the JSA.  Cover artist Mikel Janin shared the cover on Twitter/ X after the solicit for issue #12 was released.

Foremost, demonstrating that this is the “Retro-boot” Legion are the depictions of Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl.  They appear as they did when the “Retro-boot” Legion was “reintroduced” back in “The Lightning Saga.”  Amongst others are Dawnstar, Ultra Boy and Cosmic Boy in their “Retro-boot” character designs.

The Legion of Super-Heroes has been plagued with reboots both total and soft ever since the Crisis on Infinite Earths back in 1985.  The Crisis reorganized the DC Universe, part of which eliminated Superman’s time as Superboy and thus his time with the Legion of Super-Heroes.  After a “pocket universe” story that fixed this paradox the Legion continued for about five years.  It then relaunched with a “5 years later” storyline that took the once bright and hopeful future in a darker direction.  This led to a couple soft reboots of Legion history along the way.  With the Zero Hour event in 1994 the Legion completely rebooted.  The Legion would again reboot in 2004.  Finally, the classic Legion returned in the aforementioned “Lightning Saga” in 2007.  This time, the Legion history picked up from the pre-Crisis Legion continuity and restoring Superman’s time with the Legion as Superboy.  This Legion would continue up through Flashpoint and into The New 52.  Just before Flashpoint they were appearing in their own title as well as the relaunched Adventure Comics.  It seemed like a new golden age for the team.  However, sales were not enough to sustain the title far into the New 52.

The Legion was set to return during “Rebirth” within the pages of Doomsday Clock.  A young and classic Saturn Girl was a large part of it until the team finally returned at the end of the 12-issue series.  Instead of a classic Legion returning it was Bendis’ new Legion.  It’s still my opinion that the delays on Doomsday Clock were mostly due to Gary Frank having to redraw the classic Legion as Bendis’ Legion.

It’s possible that the Legion on the cover of Justice Society of America #11 is just a ruse, but there has been another reference to classic Legion lore in “House of Brainiac.”  Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) mentions that once upon a future she was very close to a Brainiac.  Pre-Crisis, Kara and Brainiac 5 were a romantic pairing.  Brainiac 5 was devastated when she died in Crisis on Infinite Earths.  taken together, this reference and the cover to Justice Society of America #11 indicate that this is not just a one-of situation.  With the impending fall of the United Planets in Green Lantern we only need Jon to go back to being 13 and DC can finally be rid of the plague that was Brian Michael Bendis.

The first film in James Gunn’s DCU will be his take on the Man of Steel with Superman, which hits theaters Summer 2025, and after getting a long list of amazing actors cast in the film, we now have our first look at the titular character played by David Corenswet.

Gunn recently took to Threads to share this image. It shows Superman sitting in a chair pulling on his classic red boots preparing to battle whatever is happening outside his window. Could this also be a tease for another villain (maybe Brainiac)? Only time will tell.

Check out the image below and let us know what you think.

A brand new Lois Lane story will arrive this summer within the pages of Action Comics thanks to New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell as she makes her DC debut for this year’s Superman Superstars initiative!

You can check out all the details below!

Bestselling Author Rainbow Rowell Makes Her DC Debut

Rainbow Rowell and Cian Tormey make news with Lois Lane this summer!

New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell makes her DC debut this July in Action Comics, delivering a story with artist Cian Tormey! Together they’ll take on the most powerful woman in Superman’s life…Lois Lane! Rowell and Tormey’s story will run in the pages of Action Comics #1067-1069, paired with a lead story by Gail Simone and Eddy Barrows.

“As a former newspaper reporter, I’ve always had a soft spot for Daily Planet stories,” shared Rowell. “I love that Clark Kent is Superman and also a working journalist—and that it isn’t just dusty backstory. It’s a real facet of his character. I love that Clark met Lois in the newsroom, and that they still work there together. (This is so realistic, I swear.) I really like it when comic book romances last…There’s a lot of story to tell after two people say yes to each other. So—even though I was a little nervous about diving into the DC Universe—I couldn’t resist the chance to write a love story that is also a newsroom story, and still a superhero story.”

“The story that Rainbow and I are telling is about Lois finding her strength, with Clark supporting her as she becomes stronger in her convictions,” added Tormey. “He sees her finding her courage in a new role, her sense of responsibility for everyone—a gentle reminder for Clark of how far he has come, and how far all of us who are not blessed with superpowers can go when faced with adversity.”

“I’ve just seen the first of Cian Tormey’s pages, and I think people are going to adore his take on Lois and Clark,” continued Rowell. “Cian’s work has a timeless quality that’s perfect for this relationship.”

Rainbow Rowell fell in love with superhero comics in junior high. She’s written two Eisner-nominated series, Runaways and She-Hulk, and the bestselling graphic novel Pumpkinheads, and is working on the manga adaptation of her novel Fangirl. She is best known for her prose novels, including #1 bestsellers Eleanor & Park and the Simon Snow Trilogy. This is Rainbow’s first work for DC.

Cian Tormey is an Irish illustrator and a graduate of the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. He currently lives in Valencia, Spain, and has been the artist for DC’s Injustice: Year Zero, Alan Scott: The Green Lantern, Nightwing, Batgirl, the GLAAD Media Award-nominated Superman: Son of Kal-El, Marvel’s Darkhold, and more.

Gail Simone is taking on the Man of Steel for this year’s Superman Superstars Initiative alongside Eddy Barrows in a 3-issue Action Comics arc. You don’t want to miss it!

“SUPERMAN AND THE CHALLENGE FROM THE STARS”!

SUPERMAN FIGHTS FOR TWO WORLDS!

Gail Simone Returns to Superman, Joined by Superstar Artist Eddy Barrows, for a New Three-Part Action Comics Arc Taking Place at the Beginning of the Man of Steel’s Super Hero Career!

DC’s 2024 Superman Superstars initiative within their Superman line of comics will continue from July to September with the all-star pairing of Gail Simone and Eddy Barrows announced as the next creative team on Action Comics, telling a new Superman story taking place at the beginning of the Man of Steel’s action-packed career. Simone and Barrows’s story, “Superman and the Challenge from the Stars,” follows arcs from Jason Aaron and John Timms (“I, Bizarro”) and Joshua Williamson and Rafa Sandoval (“House of Brainiac”).

“I love the classic Superman cast, and this story is deliberately meant to echo my all-time favorite Superman time period,” said Simone. “We didn’t want to tell a quiet story of Superman in a diner; we wanted to have a massive threat, a war taking place all over the world, and only Superman could possibly protect his adopted planet. It is unapologetically huge in scope and fun as hell, with one of the best art teams I’ve ever worked with…Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, and Rex Lokus on colors!”

The first of Simone and Barrows’s three issues kicks off when a massively powerful alien race makes Earth their arena. Superman, DC’s Man of Steel, must stand alone against impossible challenges that threaten locations all around the world and the lives of those he loves. Action Comics #1067 begins a not-to-be missed epic tale of Superman’s strength, wit, and resourcefulness in an early stage of his public career!

“For me talking about Action Comics is something that goes beyond the title itself,” shared Barrows. “I remember when I was 7 years old, I was playing on the sidewalk, and suddenly I was run over by a truck, right there. I spent 3 days fighting for my life, and during that whole year that followed I remained in bed, doing lots of physiotherapy, lots of meds and exams. Going to the doctors was a very regular thing. And it was during that time that Superman came to my life, reading Action Comics. Kal-El became a good friend of mine, making my days better. His adventures and his behavior were things that stuck with me! Reading his stories were the highlight of my days, for a 7-year-old recovering from an accident like I was. Back then I wouldn’t have imagined that one day I would be helping to build his legacy: illustrating his stories. The stories of my all-time favorite superhero… SUPERMAN!”

Action Comics #1067, #1068, and #1069 (July, August, and September) will be written by Gail Simone with art by Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, Rex Lokus and Dave Sharpe.

Action Comics #1067 will have a main cover by Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, and Tomeu Morey, and will also carry variant covers by Wes Craig, Pablo Villalobos, and Ben Oliver (1:25), on sale Wednesday, July 10. The main Eddy Barrows cover will also be released as a foil variant cover.

Summary

Power Girl and Omen get drawn into the Brainiac/ Czarnian affair currently taking place in Action Comics.  Why isn’t Power Girl taken with the rest of the super-beings in Metropolis?

Positives

With Eduardo Pansica and Julio Ferreira returning to the art chores on Power Girl #8 after the past two issues by Marguerite Sauvage, it’s clear that the Pansica/ Ferreira team (and Farjardo Jr.’s colors!) are a pretty darn good combination for Power Girl.  They handle the action well and give Power Girl a much more recognizable personality visually.  She gets that angry face that one expects. (And, they even do a good job communicating the emotions that are out of character for her!)  They draw her more confident than she’s written at times, and even manage to get a bit of attitude across as well.  Overall, their stuff looks good and despite the poor characterization of the lead character, the art invites the reader to like the book.  They are doing their damnedest to combat what Williams is doing with the character in the script.  It makes one wish the concept wasn’t so poorly conceived and executed from a writing standpoint.

There’s even a single moment, maybe three panels where Power Girl seems to almost be at odds with what’s going on with her characterization, the look on her face, something in her eye and the emotions passing beneath the surface may in fact betray something  larger at play…that somehow…the real Power Girl will emerge.  Perhaps, Williams is playing some long game (and playing it poorly) and Power Girl IS being directed…controlled…it appears it’s possible in the sequence on the bottom of page 9.  In the middle of that page, PG expresses that attitude…not of the co-dependent, insecure character Williams writes earlier in the same issue, but the attitude longtime fans EXPECT from the character, the attitude that talked back to the stalwarts of the JSA in her earliest appearances in order to be taken seriously.  It’s noticeable that when Power Girl is in combat or in action mode in this issue, she is more recognizable and enjoyable because of it.  Even if it’s just a glimpse it gives hope as does the fact that there’s another aspect that could be interpreted as a clue Power Girl is being manipulated.

The fact that we also get a “Psychic Jerk Jar” revealed in the apartment that PG shares with Omen leads credence to the idea someone may be controlling her…and it may be Omen, who’s been right under the readers’ nose from the very beginning of this new (and wretched) iteration of Power Girl.  Strangely, this version of Power Girl is beginning to feel more familiar as this off brand characterization is what’s expected and feels familiar.

Negatives

It’s very difficult to read a Power Girl who is insecure, lacks confidence in her abilities and is generally shy and dependent.  Williams gives us that as we learn she can’t roller skate…(when she loses balance wouldn’t she just levitate herself unconsciously since she can fly?).  She’s afraid to run into Lois who also happens to be at the park where she and Omen are skating because she has a column due.

The dynamic between Power Girl and Superman in Power Girl #8 is still awkward…both in story and through Williams characterization of Power Girl.  Williams subtly shows us that PG’s feeling are hurt because SHE wasn’t also abducted with the rest of the super-beings of Metropolis.  She seems to need Superman’s reassurance when he finds her…(um…why wasn’t he abducted?)  And, it will never makes sense that she’s identifying with the main Earth’s Superman as family….  It’s these moments that take away from the positive steps noted above.

It would be easier to take Power Girl’s struggles to make it in this version if she were attempting to do things on her own and for herself, but wedging her into the Super-family eliminates any sense of individuality which has been a hallmark of her character from her inception.  Williams has yet to show WHY Power Girl feels she needs to fit in with the Super-family, WHY she isn’t getting what she needs from her friends (AND surrogate family!) in the JSA, WHY she’s unable to make her way on her own.  There’s a story missing that needs to be told in order to make sense of all these “why’s.”

Verdict

The real question that must be answered with Power Girl #8 is whether or not this version of Power Girl can be enjoyed on its own terms or even in spite of itself.  Lord knows I WANT to like a Power Girl solo series.  Williams has stated that she wanted to show the differences between Power Girl and Supergirl… and she’s doing that.  She may not understand either character in terms of established histories and characterizations, but she IS making them different.  Can Paige Stetler be enjoyed as a bit of a mess trying to navigate her way through a world Williams assures us she doesn’t understand whilst consumed with feelings of insecurity and redundancy?  I don’t know that a reader who has a history with Power Girl, a reader who understands the substance of her character and identifies with/ enjoys her established characterization can make the leap…it’s too … different.  The art from Pansica and Ferreira want to make you like it.  It’s effective in that way, but unless an audience embraces this iteration it feels hopelessly at odds with what people have always liked about Power Girl, and this issue gives the reader very little of that.  As a Power Girl fan for nearly the entirety of her existence, this issue continues to disappoint.  The art is able to raise this issue a bit, surprisingly.

We are just over a year away from the cinematic start of the new James Gunn-led DCU, and to kick things off will be the Man of Steel himself, Superman, and we now know what the official title for the film will be, and it’s no longer Superman: Legacy.

James Gunn took to Threads recently and shared that principle photography was starting on his Superman film, and even shared a first look at the Superman symbol that will be used. As you can see below, the new symbol takes inspiration from the classic story Kingdom Come, but instead of red and black, it’s red and yellow.

Gunn wrote, “Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday.”

After that post, he also commented that while the original name of the film was Superman: Legacy, that has actually changed, and the film will now simply be titled SUPERMAN.

“When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN. Making our way to you July 2025.”

This works out since the Richard Donner film from 1978 was actually titled Superman: The Movie, and it makes for a much cleaner beginning to this brand new universe at DC Studios.

Superman will star David Corenswet as the titular superhero, along with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord, Maria Gabriela de Faria as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and Milly Alcock as Supergirl.

Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

The cast for the upcoming first film in the new James Gunn-led DCU, Superman: Legacy, is really shaping up to be something special, and that feeling is just growing as a new announcement has been made that House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock has been cast as Supergirl.

Rumors have been floating around in recent weeks about possible choices for this role, and Alcock’s name has consistently been in the mix. It’s been reported that the final round of screen tests came down to her and Meg Donnelly, who actually voiced Supergirl in the recent DC animated movies Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One. Many assumed this would give Donnelly an advantage in scoring this role.

Supergirl is set to make her debut in Superman: Legacy and then go on to star in her own solo film, Supergirl: World of Tomorrow, so we’ll definitely be seeing more of Alcock sooner rather than later.

Milly Alcock will be joining a wonderful cast for Superman: Legacy, including David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, and María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer.

No official synopsis has been released yet, and James Gunn has said that filming will begin next month, so stay tuned for more news!

Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×07: Clark tries to plan a normal date without any Superman problems but gets interrupted when Mr. Mxyzptlk sweeps him, Jimmy, and Lois into a high-stakes, multiverse-hopping chase.

Positives

Lois and Clark finally have a date night to themselves. With this being their first date, Clark is doing everything he can to plan it to perfection. However, things go sideways quickly when Mr. Mxyzptlk, a powerful being from an alternate dimension, shows up. Claiming to need Superman’s help, the two are soon on an adventure across the multiverse. But there is more to Mxyzptlk’s story than it seems.

Lois and Jimmy have a weird encounter of their own when they meet alternate versions of themselves from the multiverse. Known as the Council of Lois, these members are versions of Lois and Jimmy throughout the multiverse tasked with protecting it from Mxyzptlk and stopping him, no matter the cost. Lois seems a bit cautious and untrusting meeting her alternate selves–and it seems that she has a good reason.

All of this comes with plenty of comedy included with the action, as I’ve come to expect with My Adventures With Superman. Even Mr. Mxyzptlk, who I was familiar with from the previous animated series, was amazing here. I especially liked the easter egg callback to the hat from the animated series. This show is different, yet it pays respects to its roots with how it portrays all of its characters so far.

Negatives

I have no negatives about this episode. It’s just pure goodness.

Verdict

Overall, I thought My Adventures With Superman 1×07 was a great episode that had plenty of easter eggs to keep an eye out for. One thing that stands out to me is the file that Lois finds on Superman. When she opens it, a lot is revealed that may change her relationship with Clark. But only time will tell.

Score: 5/5

Summary

Omen saves the day as Power Girl fights Superman while she’s under the control of her Symbioship.  Paige just can’t catch a break from Leah Williams.

Positives

Williams has some good ideas in Power Girl #4, they just don’t play out well.  I mean if you’re a Power Girl fan, you’d expect her to be the hero…but, not under Leah Williams.  That said, it’s nice to see Superman acknowledge Power Girl’s intelligence and problem solving skills as he admits he was wrong about the “virus” and PG was right.  Additionally, the whole idea of the Symbioship trying to control Power Girl is interesting, and a pretty intriguing concept that’s unique to her and her story.  It’s hard to tell if this is supposed to be the end of this arc and the Symbioship is going to cause more trouble next issue or just somewhere down the line.  Normally, this would not be a problem, but the idea of the Symbioship being the cause of Power Girl’s terrible characterization in this series needs to be concluded IMMEDIATELY if it is to in fact be revealed as such.

It would make PERFECT sense with how Williams has written Power Girl if the ship was making her dependent on others so she could be prepped to be dependent on the ship instead.  That’s the story I feel is somewhere twisted up inside this take on Power Girl.  It’s a great out for the poor characterization and bizarre set up of the supporting cast.  It’s obvious…so…pfft.

Negatives

While I’ve not mentioned it in previous Power Girl reviews because I’ve been distracted by the awful scripts, Power Girl #3 brought up some concerns with her physical depiction.  For whatever reason, PG just isn’t drawn like PG.  In this run, Pansica is drawing her slim, fairly flat chested and apparently quite young.  By contrast, the covers by Gary Frank capture a more accurate Power Girl energy.  She’s bulkier- in a good way- and musters the sneer and confident facial expressions which are iconic to her character.  While they aren’t on every cover together, it’s apparent that Power Girl isn’t depicted that way on the inside either in the art or the script.  The interiors just present a Supergirl with short hair and none of the defining characteristics that set the two apart visually.

The name Power Girl has always suggested aspects of the character’s personality- strength, confidence, COMPETENCE…and yet, this series has been hard pressed to demonstrate any of that.  With last issue and Power Girl #4, we finally got a little competence from PG, yet it’s overrun when Omen has to save Power Girl.  That’s right…Power Girl can’t even save herself in her own comic.  It makes it seem like Omen’s sole existence is to be here to be the hero that Williams doesn’t want Power Girl to be.  Williams has already seeded this run with examples of Power Girl’s incompetence, so it’s not THAT surprising, it just continues to be disappointing.  It continues to demonstrate that Williams is completely lost when it comes to understanding anything of substance about Power Girl’s character.  Maybe Williams should just rename her Pitiful Girl, that would fit the stories and characterization in her scripts.

Negatives Cont’d

There’s some internal logic that doesn’t make sense either that just elicits more head scratching.  In previous issues, we’ve seen Power Girl depicted as new to Earth and what’s it’s like to live among humans.  In Power Girl #4, the Symbioship recounts following her career on Earth…that right, her CAREER, referencing changes and the YEARS she and the ship have been on Earth.  YEARS, the ship says it “grows old.”  And yet, Power Girl doesn’t know what it means to live as a human?  She’s just learning to “human” (see last issue).  This is completely aside from understanding the character.  This is a complete lack of understanding what the writer herself has already written about the character IN this series- just LAST ISSUE!  Is editorial completely asleep?  Drunk?  Stoned?  Does anyone actually care?  Whoever greenlit this series should be fired.

Verdict

If Leah Williams had an editor that was competent and given some direction, this storyline could be salvaged into something VERY apropos for Power Girl.  As it stands it’s the equivalent of amateur hour.  Pansica’s depiction of PG may be off, but the storytelling is solid and there’s a look to the book that is enjoyable.  Of course it would be more enjoyable if one were illiterate.  Can this just be cancelled and relaunched with a competent writer and editor who actually know and care about the character?  It’s disgusting, you wouldn’t see this happen with Batman or Superman…er um, yeah, that did happen with Superman- BENDIS!  I guess it’s the curse of being related to the Man of Steel.  I’m going to try not to vomit.
