Summary

Dinah struggles to keep her team together while Harley saves the day!  Of course Harley knows how to get the team on Themiscyra secretly!

Positives

Birds of Prey #2 starts with a touching flashback with Dinah and Sin.  It reminds the reader why this team has been assembled with a solid character moment.  Leonardo Romero brings another excellent performance on the art chores.  He displays a range from intimate to exaggerated which are both appropriate in their respective scenes.  Dinah and Sin in the opening sequence both exhibit a genuine fondness that Romero captures.  Additionally, in the span of 2 pages Dinah displays, confusion, anger and resignation in succession as she tries to keep her team together.

There are moments in this issue as Dinah struggles to get things going that this feels like a Birds of Prey comic.  They are few, however.

Negatives

Like it or not, your enjoyment of Birds of Prey #2 hinges on how much you like Harley Quinn.  If you’re a fan, you’ll probably enjoy this comic.  If you you’re not, then…this will be a frustrating read.  Harley just sucks the concept of the Birds of Prey out of the issue.  The moment it starts to feel like a Birds of Prey comic, Harley pops up and just becomes annoying.  Now, if Harley were to die by the end of this arc, it might be worth it, but what happens in issue #5 or #6 can’t make this issue any better.  There’s always hope for the next arc, right?  As long as Thompson gets Harley off the team, that is.  You can’t make readers like Harley if they don’t like Harley and Harley is written like Harley.

As Thompson has stated, Harley is the wildcard.  Will she also be the Harley ex machina- the out for plot corners?  She already feels like she dominates this issue with her solution to getting on Themiscyra.  It could prove to be an interesting moral quandary for Black Canary to get assistance from a villain like King Shark, but there’s no sense of that in the script at all.  Thompson realizes this is not the Harley Quinn animates series on MAX, right?  This just seems to shove character aside so Thompson can do something zany with Harley.  I get that Harley’s personality and characterization push her forward and dominate an issue, even if it’s not intended.  This knowledge doesn’t improve the issue, however.  I don’t know if it’s possible to write Harley accurately without this happening.

Negatives Cont’d

With John Constantine and the magic angle, it feels less and less like a Birds of Prey comic.  It’s true, one can imagine Barbara arranging using magic with an appearance by Zatanna, or I suppose even Constantine, but there’s something about the haphazard way it seems to come about that detracts from the tone of what a Birds of Prey series should be.  It almost feels like Thompson didn’t have a better idea so she had to go the magic route to get out of another plot corner.  I think it would’ve come off better had we seen Dinah go through the thought process of her plan instead of seeing it play out.  Again, it feel like she decided she wanted to use Constantine and wrote it that way instead of Constantine being a creative solution to a problem.  Good thing Constantine owed Dinah a favor.  How many people will owe Dinah a favor in this series?  And, it appears King Shark owed Harley a favor, too!  As it is, it is difficult to follow Dinah’s plan.  There’s a “hurry up and get there already” feel.  It’s a necessary step in the plot for the team to get to Themiscyra, but it’s more boring than interesting or exciting.

Furthermore, Dinah’s attempts to keep the team together seem to be proof that she hasn’t built a team that is “impeccably trustworthy.”  The readers knew this, why didn’t Dinah?  It just makes Dinah seem stupid for trusting them instead of going to true friends like Helena and Barbara- Meridian be damned!   That falls on Thompson’s shoulders for forcing this team together.  She shouldn’t have included the premise that Dinah was assembling them with the belief that they were all “impeccably trustworthy.”  If Dinah had taken a different approach, more of a  “I’ll do whatever it takes,” then her struggles would feel genuine.  As it is, this conflict feels contrived and there simply for the sake of conflict.  With Birds of Prey #2, it feels like Thompson is really interested in writing a Suicide Squad title.  This isn’t the Birds of Prey, it’s Dinah stuck with a couple people she can trust, two villains, and a couple chancers.

Verdict

Harley Quinn ruins everything she’s in.  She doesn’t play well with others and it’s no different in Birds of Prey #2.  She doesn’t mesh well with the rest of the team tonally.  Her ridiculousness detracts from what at times begins to feel like a Birds of Prey comic.  There’s far too little time spent on character which leaves too much time for Harley.  Thankfully, Romero does a really nice job with the art on this issue.  Script-wise it feels messy and cobbled together, you just sort of want to get through it so the plot can move forward.  It’s definitely a step backwards from last issue.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League has been delayed once more by WB Developers and Rocksteady Games.

This is the fifth time the long-awaited multi-player game has been withheld from release. The game was originally previewed during the Pandemic in 2020 at the first DC FanDome online event. The previous rescheduling had planned to debut the game last year before it was again rescheduled for this coming May. Developers released a recent trailer that added more hype to the project with the reveal of the late Kevin Conroy voicing Batman in the game one final time. The recent passing of the voice actor added more emotional investment and anticipation to this game’s launch.

Suicide Squad Problems Target Rocksteady’s Reputation

So why another delay?

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier’s latest Tweet on the topic claims that it was the result of a Playstation showcase last month. The gameplay had been “poorly received by fans.” Another source closely familiar with the game has stated that the game is on an indefinite hold until they work out the problems the fans noted about the quality of the product. This is a major blow to the Montreal-based Rocksteady, which has not released a game since 2015’s Batman: Arkham Knight.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is set five years after the events of Batman: Arkham Knight and revolves around Task Force X’s latest mission in Metropolis which initially pits them against the forces of Brainiac.  That is, until it’s revealed he has taken control of the Justice League, thus creating a new mission objective. The voice cast includes Tara Strong as Harley Quinn, Bumper Robinson as Deadshot, Samoa Joe as King Shark, Daniel Lapaine as Captain Boomerang, and Debra Wilson as Amanda Waller. Aside from Conroy as Batman, the only other Justice League voice actor confirmed is Scott Porter as The Flash.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League has one voice performer in its ranks that will enthrall fans one last time:

Kevin Conroy.

Suicide Squad Gets A Final Dose of Vengeance From Conroy’s Dark Knight

The 68-year-old actor, who passed away on November 10 was, for over 30 years, the definitive voice of Batman. This game will mark his final performance as the Dark Knight. Rocksteady’s latest trailer for this long-awaited game made this revelation at the end of one of the game’s cinematics.

After a grieving period that feels longer than it should for longtime Batman fans, hearing that iconic tone and those lines one last time will bring tears to your eyes. Since the premiere of Batman: The Animated Series in September of 1992, Conroy had reprised the role in multiple spinoffs, video games, and DTV animated features. He even got the chance to play a live-action Bruce Wayne in The CW’s Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths. Since his passing, former cast mates and fans worldwide have paid tribute to Kevin’s memory via social media and fan videos.

Here is the official synopsis for the multi-player platform:

Based on the DC Comics supervillain/anti-hero team the Suicide Squad, the game revolves around the titular team of super-criminals, who are assembled by Amanda Waller and sent to Metropolis to stop the alien invader Brainiac and save the members of the Justice League who have been brainwashed by him.

Other confirmed cast members include Conroy’s fellow BTAS alum Tara Strong once again as Harley Quinn, Debra Wilson as Amanda Waller, and Joe Seanoa as Nanaue/King Shark. Seanoa is best known to WWE fans as Samoa Joe.

The game was first announced at the 2020 DC FanDome during the global pandemic and has been delayed multiple times. It is expected to be released May 26, 2023.

King Shark from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will make a return to theaters, according to Sylvester Stallone.

The 70-year-old actor, who voiced the CGI character in the 2021 hit, was recently asked about future appearances while promoting his new Paramount+ series Tulsa King. He responded:

Yes, for sure. I think James has been very generous… He and I are pretty tight. So if there’s an opportunity… I love him, he’s great.

Stallone has also played with Gunn in the MCU camp as Ravager Stakar Ogord, in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 alongside fellow Cliffhanger alum Michael Rooker, who played the popular Yondu.

James Gunn’s DC Studio Plans and King Shark History

As the newly appointed CEO of DC Studios, Gunn, alongside co-CEO Peter Safran, hopes to tap into the potential of these properties to bring them to prominence. Further, they are reportedly collaborating on a bible for the shared DC universe. A personal favorite for him is the camaraderie between Batman and Superman:

I love their interaction. I love the ways in which they’re the same and the ways in which they are completely different.

As to further installments of his Suicide Squad, however, although Stallone is willing, nothing has been confirmed at this time.

King Shark has got much exposure over the past several years. Although he made his first appearance in Superboy #0, created by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett, Nanue only recently appeared across mass media. He’s made several appearances on The CW’s The Flash as a doppelganger of Earth-2 from 2015 onward. Rather than being a natural-born shark/human hybrid, this TV version began as a marine biologist named Shay Lamden who had been mutated by the Particle Accelerator Explosion of that Earth. While the CGI character was voiced by David Sobolov, his human counterpart was portrayed by Dan Payne.

He has also made appearances in animated projects such as Batman: The Brave And The BoldBatman: Assault on ArkhamJustice League: War, and Young Justice. Currently a version of King Shark can be seen as a regular on the mature-themed HBO animated series Harley Quinn, voiced by Ron Funches. He’s also set to make his video game debut appearance on the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.

More as it develops.

Harley and her best girl are back in a brand-new trailer for the third season of Harley Quinn.

The latest trailer that dropped for the third season of the HBO hit animated series starring Kaley Cuoco revealed to fans what to expect. Picking up from where the second season left off, Harley and Ivy are officially a couple after a shaky start. And shaky is putting it mildly in the world of the former Dr. Harleen Quinzell. From she and Ivy sleeping together twice when Ivy was engaged to Kite-Man, to Commissioner Gordon ambushing the wedding of Ivy to Kite-Man to take back a villain-controlled Gotham, the road to Ivy and Quinn getting on the same page had been as topsy-turvy as the inmates in Arkham Asylum. Now, three weeks after they officially got together, these ladies are bringing the band back together for Ivy’s ecoterrorist plot. The trailer also reveals the debut of Nightwing to the show, as well as a possible antihero turn for Harley that contradicts her girlfriend’s agenda. There is even a callback to “A Death in The Family” when the Joker’s thrown in the trailer.

Besides Cuoco in the title role, returning are Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, Alan Tudyk as The Joker/Clayface/Calender Man/Condiment King/Doctor Trap, Jason Alexander as Sy Borgman, Tony Hale as Doctor Psycho/Felix Faust, Ron Fuches as King Shark, J.B. Smoove as Frank The Plant, James Adomian as Bane, Diedrich Bader as Batman, Christopher Meloni as Commissioner Gordon, and Briana Cuoco as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. New to the cast this year is Harvey Guillen offering his voicework to Dick Grayson/Nightwing.

Catch the third season of Harley Quinn when it debuts July 28th on HBO.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League will not be stuffing anyone’s stocking this Christmas.

The Rocksteady-produced game had been originally anticipated by fans for its December 2022. The company is famous for its dip in the DC Universe with its phenomenal Batman: Arkham series, and now brings its talents to the dysfunctional Task Force X. After two groundbreaking trailers the year before and several months back, the game seemed to be set to go under everyone’s tree. And yet, news has reached the gaming community that the target date has been rescheduled to some time in 2023. The reason has not been confirmed, but the pandemic is one culprit. It has become common because of COVID-19 for both games and movies to be delayed. In the case of video games, anxious gamers can expect a product to be delayed and rescheduled at least once.

Suicide Squad – Who Are They and What Is The Game About?

For those new to the franchise, The Suicide Squad is a group of DC’s worst supervillains corralled by Amanda Waller with bombs in their heads and led on the field by Colonel Rick Flagg. The deal is simple: Complete missions that will go towards taking time off of their sentence and stay within established boundaries. If one of them tries to escape or disobey orders, Waller detonates the bomb in the disobedient team member.

The team was brought onto the world stage in 2016’s Suicide Squad with its breakout star Margot Robbie’s portrayal as Harley Quinn. Its standalone follow up The Suicide Squad by James Gunn saw Robbie’s return, and newcomer Peacemaker, played by John Cena. Cena is currently starring in HBO’s Peacemaker series, which is a prequel to the events of the film.

As the trailers have revealed, the game focuses on The Suicide Squad ordered by Amanda Waller to take down the Justice League after they have been possessed by the alien Brainiac. The roster includes Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Harley Quinn, and King Shark. Its voice cast features Tara Strong, Debra Wilson, and Joe Seanoa aka former WWE Superstar Samoa Joe.

Summary

The Suicide Squad: The government sends the most dangerous Super-Villains in the world – Bloodsport, Peacemaker, King Shark, Harley Quinn, and others – to the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Armed with high-tech weapons, they trek through the dangerous jungle on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave. As always, one wrong move and they’re dead – whether at the hands of the ultimate Kaiju; Starro the Conqueror; a teammate, or Waller herself. If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them. All of them.

Positives

Warner Bros. has released James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad in the three standard formats: A 4K/Blu-Ray combo pack, a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack, and a DVD pack. Each of these also includes a digital copy code redeemable through Movies Anywhere. The review copy supplied included the 4K and Blu-Ray versions of the movie.

While I enjoyed the first Suicide Squad movie, it clearly had some issues. Gunn’s sequel is a big improvement over its predecessor. It would almost qualify as a reboot. However, it does acknowledge and build on the previous movie. A number of important characters return, namely: Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, Captain Boomerang, and Amanda Waller.

It also introduces a lot on new characters to the Squad. Gunn is clearly a fan of the comics, and has done some deep dives into DC Comics history to fill out the team’s ranks. Many of them look like they stepped right off the comic page, and Some of them have established history with the Squad in the comics. We get the likes of King Shark, Weasel, Ratcatcher, the Thinker, Mongal, and others. One of the weirdest is TDK, a.k.a. The Detachable Kid, based on the Legion of Super-Heroes reject, Arm-Fall-Off-Boy.

The Suicide Squad - DC Comics News

Positives Cont.

It turns out that the Suicide Squad needs a large roster, as the movie lives up to its title. This mission is indeed a suicide mission for most of the cast. I won’t get into specific spoilers about who dies, but Gunn killed off some characters that I thought for sure would come through alive. This really drives home that none of the characters are indispensable. The first movie attempted to do this by killing off Slipknot. But Gunn succeeds by actually wiping most of the team out.

In my opinion, the two stars of the movie are Bloodsport and Peacemaker. Tension is built up between the two, having very similar skillsets, but radically different attitudes. The pair spend a lot of the movie bickering and engaging in competitive behavior.

In many respects, a lot of Deadshot has been transferred over to the character of Bloodsport. They’re both incredibly skilled marksmen, and Waller uses Bloodsport’s daughter as leverage to get him to obey her orders, much like she has done with Deadshot in the comics and Idris Elba is definitely a major upgrade from Will Smith.

I didn’t expect much from John Cena at first, but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised with his performance as Peacemaker. Unlike the comics, where the character was originally played seriously, Gunn has discovered a wealth of humor in the character. The whole idea of a man who loves peace so much that he’s willing to fight for it is a strange contradiction. This version of Peacemaker suffers from a condition that renders him unable to see that contradiction. And Cena sells that insanity in a hilarious manner.

The Suicide Squad - DC Comics News

Positives Cont.

I absolutely love that James Gunn actually using Starro the conqueror – exactly as he appears in the comics – the major villain. That would have fallen flat with any other director, but Gunn makes it work. Gunn’s love of the comics shows through in this movie. He even includes characters from the title’s minor supporting cast like John Economos and Emilia Harcourt.

The Suicide Squad looks and sounds great on Blu-Ray, but if you have a 4K player and compatible TV, then it’s worth the extra cost to see it in full 4K Ultra HD. On the other hand, if you’re not fussy about picture quality and don’t mind missing out on the special features, the DVD is a decent budget option.

There are a wealth of special features, which are primarily found on the Blu-Ray disc. There’s the standard Director’s commentary, deleted/extended scenes, and gag reel features. There are also scene breakdowns and mini-documentaries. Of special note is the feature “Gotta Love the Squad”, which focuses on how Gunn stays true to John Ostrander’s Suicide Squad comic. It really shows how much love Gunn tried to keep his movie true to the spirit of John Ostrander’s original vision.

I also loved the inclusion of three “retro trailers”. Each is a 70s or 80s style movie trailer for the film done in a different movie genre: war movie, horror movie, and buddy cop movie. These are all hilarious, but they also underscore that there are elements of those genres present in Gunn’s movies. While these trailers are hilarious, they do draw attention to those facets of Gunn’s movie as well.

Negatives

On the subject of trailers, I have to say that there is no excuse for not including the actual teaser and theatrical trailers for the film among the special features. In my opinion, every home video movie should include all the official trailers. However, this is a rather minor disappointment.

The Suicide Squad - DC Comics News

Verdict

There are some doomsayers that are declaring the DCEU a failure and that the Snyderverse is effectively dead. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad utterly refutes that idea. It shows that with the right creative talent, there is still a lot of life left in the DCEU.

Rumors right? We can’t live with ’em, and can’t live without ’em. As always, some are proven true and some are downright lies. Well, where do theories lie? Eh, it’s 50/50 either way, but here we are taking a look at a Suicide Squad theory going around about the death toll in the new film. A spec piece that can be found on ScreenRant (love the Hamilton reference by the way there guys) has been making the rounds and finally gained the attention of director James Gunn. What are the speculations? Everybody dies! No, just kidding, not really . . . maybe. So, the theory presents that seven characters could end up sleeping with the fishes in the new film. Well, Gunn says that is “overly optimistic” in a tweet released last Saturday.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Since the beginning, Gunn has said “don’t get attached” to the characters. Well, aren’t we already attached and that’s why we’re watching right? Besides that, when the first trailer was released the rated-R film set the record for the most-watched red band trailer on the internet. Dang, it even beat Wonder Woman. In the trailer, we see King Shark, played by Sylvester Stallone, ripping a body in half (ew) and that’s just part of the cake. The icing is hundreds of bullets and guns throughout the whole thing. So far, no death has been leaked . . . yet. For the full synopsis see WB’s release below:

“Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.”

The Suicide Squad comes to theaters and HBO Max on August 6th, 2021. So what do you think? Is it gonna happen? Is Gunn just throwing us off the scent because someone got close to a leak? Let us know in the comments!

Summary

As the only source of electricity in all of New Gotham, Harley And Ivy go undercover as college students to infiltrate the Riddler’s University. While at the university, they befriend the Commissioner’s daughter, and uncover a sinister plot by the Riddler.

Positives

Riddle U was an absolute blast to watch. It was quirky. humorous, and over the top, which is what you’d expect this series to be.

Right of the bat, Harley is extremely excited about going to college, so long as she gets vaccinated for HPV. Seeing Kite-Man interacting with Harley and Ivy while flying them into the college was brief, but fun. Anytime we get to see Kite-Man is great, something I would of never of said before this series started.

This was definitely Clayface’s time to shine. Crashing Harley and Ivy’s undercover ruse with his “Stefanie” character was hysterical, and pulled it off so well.

The biggest surprise of Riddle U was the introduction of Barbara Gordon, and the origin of Batgirl. I’ve always been a fan of taking well established characters and their origin stories and putting a twist on them. It’s a good way to keep it fresh. Riddle U did just that with Batgirl. Her admiration of Batman was still their, but it took her teaming up with Harley and Ivy to take down the Riddler to give her the push over the edge she needed to become her alter ego. I for one enjoyed that slight twist, and it certainly was a fun direction to take without really changing her origin story. Also, it’s interesting to not that the voice of Barbara Gordon is actually Kaley’s sister, Briana Cuoco. She did a great job with the voiceover.

James Gordon was in rare form in Riddle U. Not only was he staying with his daughter, but seemingly has given up hope completely, turning to drinking beer in the shower and eating questionable items off his chest. But I have to admit, it works for this character. The one thing you can say about this series is that it doesn’t take itself seriously, and I absolutely appreciate that.

The fight scene at the end was great. It’ll also be interesting to see if and how keeping the Riddler alive will pane out by the end of the season.

Negatives

No negatives in “Riddle U”.

Verdict

“Riddle U” was a fun and entertaining episode, with a great introduction to Barbara Gordon. If your a fan of Batgirl like I am, you’ll love this episode.

Summary

In the aftermath of Gotham’s destruction at the finale of season 1, Harley and her gang find themselves enjoying the chaos and destruction that is New Gotham.

Positives

It was absolutely incredible that the WB was able to crank out season 2 of Harley Quinn so soon after the first season ended. Given the global situation right now, or perhaps the creators took a page from “Batmans: No Man’s Land” story arc, New Gotham certainly was a natural transition from season one.

This episode was definitely all about the villains. No Batman, no GCPD, and villains like Two-Face and the Penguin are vying to take over. Of course, that doesn’t sit well with Harley. In classic Harley form, she comes up with the idea that if these super villains don’t have goons to back them up, then New Gotham will remain the apocalyptic wasteland that she enjoys. Seeing the goons turn on their leaders and double-crossing them was incredibly fun to watch.

James Gordon was his typical “desperate for confirmation” acholic self in New Gotham. He did his best in keeping positive, trying to rally the GCPD to stop the violence. At the end though, even his wife couldn’t be with him anymore. You really have to feel for his character, but watching him try and not let the misery get to him was a staple of season 1, and am so glad it continued into season 2. The addition of Robin as a miniature form of Batman was also great. Hopefully will get to see more of the Bat family in this season.

The introduction of the Injustice League was fantastic. In New Gotham where the super villains played an important role, it was fun to see the banter between all of them. The writing staff should be commended on taking a monster like Bane and making him so entertaining to watch. He could easily have his own series.

After what the writers did to Poison Ivy at the end of last season, it was clear that they had no issues killing off main characters. That was pretty evident with the surprising ending of New Gotham. Shocking for sure, but definitely makes the show much more unpredictable.

Negatives

Maybe it’s just me, but I really missed Kite-Man in this episode. His interaction with the A list villains would have been great. I’ve really enjoyed his character in this series, and would have been great to see what happened with him in New Gotham.

Verdict

New Gotham was an entertaining and a fun start to season 2. It was a strong direction to where this season is going, and looks to be even crazier then the first season.
