Kevin Conroy, the actor who provided the voice of Batman for 30 years, has sadly passed away at the age of 66 after a brief, private battle with cancer.

From his casting in 1992, the actor portrayed Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego across the pop culture spectrum. Beginning with the groundbreaking Batman: The Animated Series, Conroy voiced the character in spinoff shows Batman: The New Adventures,  Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Static Shock, and Justice League Unlimited. He then starred in DC’s DTV animated features such as Batman/Mister Freeze: Sub-Zero, Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker, Batman: Mystery of The BatwomanSuperman/Batman: Public EnemiesSuperman/Batman: Apocalypse, Justice League: Doom, Batman: Assault on Arkham, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox and Batman: The Killing Joke. Batman: Mask of The Phantasm, the animated spinoff of BTAS, is the only one of Conroy’s Batman projects to have a theatrical release, back in 1993.

He also reprised the role for video games, infamously for Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham AsylumBatman: Arkham City, and Batman: Arkham Knight. His video game resume expanded with Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2. Kevin’s coup de grâce in his association with the character came in portraying a Bruce Wayne from an alternate dimension in the CW Arrowverse crossover event Crisis on Infinite Earths, the first time using his Batman voice in front of the camera rather than behind a microphone. His final stints as The Dark Knight were in the Justice League Action! series and the DTV feature Justice League vs. The Fatal Five.

Former co-stars from Batman: The Animated Series, Diane Pershing, and Loren Lester – Poison Ivy and Robin, respectively – confirmed on Diane’s Instagram, featuring a photo of Conroy and Lester:

Very sad news: our beloved voice of Batman, Kevin Conroy, died yesterday. He’s been ill for a while but he really put in a lot of time at the cons, to the joy of all of his fans. He will be sorely missed not just by the cast of the series but by his legion of fans all over the world.

Kevin Conroy – The Voice, The Man, The Legend Remembered

Since the announcement of his death, Kevin’s friends and former co-stars have paid tribute on their social media. Voice Actress Tara Strong, who starred as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl with Conroy on multiple projects, only had this to say:

I don’t have the words. Not today. My heart is broken. There will never be another like him. Rest legend.

Arrowverse alum John Wesley Shipp, best known as Barry Allen from the 1990 CBS short-lived series The Flash, tweeted the following:

Heartbroken at the passing of my decades-long friend from the early days of our careers – both amazed at finding ourselves closely identified with superheroes – the late great Kevin Conroy. Much love to Kevin’s family and friends. You are honored, Kevin, and missed already.

Above all, the great Mark Hamill, whose infamous portrayal of The Joker battled Conroy’s Batman for thirty years across multiple platforms, offered these words:

Kevin was a brilliant [actor. For] several generations, he has been the definitive Batman. It was one of those perfect scenarios where they got the exact right guy for the exact right part, and the world was better for it. His rhythms and subtleties, tones, and delivery – that all also helped inform my performance. He was the ideal partner – it was such a complementary, creative experience. I couldn’t have done it without him. He will always be my Batman.

Hamill also said that he loved him like a brother.

Born on November 30, 1955, Conroy was one of three siblings raised in Westbury, New York. Acting was already in the family, as his aunt was the famous Broadway star, Susan Conroy. Having earned a full scholarship to Julliard at age 17 – studying under Academy Award winner John Houseman – he roomed with future legend Robin Williams. He graduated in 1978 and toured with Houseman’s group, “The Acting Company.” Although making his TV debut in 1980 on Another World, Conroy soon returned to the theater, even holding the title role of Hamlet in the 1984 New York Shakespeare Festival.  Other TV appearances included regular roles on Tour of Duty and Ohara.

However, it was a casting call in 1991 for the role of The Caped Crusader that truly showed his versatility. Unlike any previous voice actor before him, Kevin provided two distinctive voices for the same man; Bruce Wayne had a spoiled, upbeat tone, ideal for a billionaire playboy, while he delivered a dark, gravelly voice for The Dark Knight.

He tackled this dual identity in that radio drama-esque recording studio with an intimate knowledge of the character’s psychology. In the documentary Heart of Batman, Kevin said:

The trick over this long arc has been to not let it get stale. And I learned this early on that Batman is not the disguise. Batman is who he went to, and what he became, because of the tragedy of his childhood. It’s where he found safety. It’s where he is most comfortable, in that cave. The suit of armor he puts on, the role he plays for the world, is Bruce Wayne. That’s the performance. Once I found that about the character, it really made sense to me. It kept the Batman voice from sounding artificial, and it [made Bruce Wayne] such a different persona.

To date, his body of work associated with Batman gives Kevin the distinction of being the longest-running actor to portray the character in general. Although having never suited up himself onscreen, Conroy has outlasted every “bat-actor” from Adam West to Robert Pattinson. He had also taken part in the anthology DC Pride, penning “Finding Batman”, telling the story of his life and how he came out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

Voice Casting Director, Andrea Romano, the woman who cast Kevin into the role he became so synonymous with, also fondly reflected on her own experience working with him:

Kevin was far more than an actor whom I had the pleasure of casting and directing – he was a dear friend for 30+ years whose kindness and generous spirit knew no boundaries. Kevin’s warm heart, delightfully deep laugh, and pure love of life will be with me forever.

As a man is defined by his actions, one of the best validations of that heart was found after New York’s darkest day. Kevin, during an interview, once recounted an experience volunteering at a meal station following the events of 9/11.

We’re getting hundreds of meals ready, and this one guy in the middle of the night, three nights into this, says; “My day job is I’m an architect, what’s your day job?” So, I said; “Well I do voices mostly”, and he said; “I knew it! You’re the guy that does Batman! You’re that Kevin Conroy!” He goes into this dining hall, and this is the first week after the attack, there was just this somber sadness, and this guy goes; “Guys! guys! you’re not going to believe who’s been cooking your dinners! It’s Batman!” There’s a long silence, and then you can hear “Bullshit!” from the back of the place, and someone else says; “Make him prove [it! So] I’m in the back kitchen, and they suddenly hear me saying; “I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!” There’s a long pause, then you hear from the back of the place; “Holy f@(#! That is Batman!” Suddenly people were laughing, and the architect who had [recognized] me said; “What does it feel like to be Santa Claus?” Cause that’s what just happened here.

BTAS writer and Producer Paul Dini, whose Mister Freeze episode “Heart of Ice” earned the series the first of two Emmy Awards, has nothing but praise for the late actor.:

Kevin brought a light with him, [everywhere, whether] in the recording booth giving it his all, or feeding first responders during 9/11, or making sure every fan who ever waited for him had a moment with their Batman. A hero in every sense of the word. Irreplaceable. Eternal.

Kevin is survived by his husband, Vaughn C. Williams, his brother, Tom, and sister, Trisha.

RIP Batman. Always The Night.

Wings and Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman actress Farrah Forke has died at the age of 54.

Forke’s family has announced that Farrah passed away at her Texas home on February 25th after a long battle with cancer. Their joint statement reads, “Farrah was fierce, tender, loyal, loving, strong, funny, smart, protective, kind, passionate, and utterly [irreplacable. She] brought a light to the world that even after her passing, the light remains.”

Fans best remember her from the hit NBC sitcom wings, where she played helicopter pilot Alex Lambert and was the love interest of both Tim Daly‘s Joe Hackett and Steven Weber’s Brian Hackett. She also portrayed District Attorney Mason Drake on Lois & Clark, who was a love interest to Clark Kent until her untimely demise. And finally, she provided the voice of Big Barda in the second season of Batman Beyond in 2000 and Justice League Unlimited in 2005. The return to Big Barda would prove to be her final role.

Forke isn’t the only Wings alum to have ties in the DC Animated Universe. Daly is remembered in the title role of Superman: The Animated Series before George Newbern took over in the follow-up Justice League. Weber, meanwhile, provided the voice of Alfred Pennyworth in a recent episode of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?, but is better known in Marvel’s camp as Ultimate Spider-Man’s Norman Osborn/Green Goblin.

Farrah’s film credits include projects such as DisclosureHeatKate’s Addiction, and Ground Control. She noted her favorite role was a 2001 independent film entitled What It Is, of which she was a producer. It was later screened at the 2003 New York International Film Festival. She then stepped away from Hollywood and relocated to Taos, New Mexico to spend time with her father.  She returned to her native Texas to raise her two children, Chuck and Wit, with her husband, former Wings Art Director Mark Layton Brown, making her hiatus permanent.

Batman: The Animated Series and its stellar voice cast are heading to the recording studio…as an audio drama?

Batman: TAS as An Audio Drama – Who’s Involved and What Do We Remember?

This past Los Angeles Comic Con saw BTAS alums Kevin Conroy (Bruce Wayne/Batman) and John Glover (Edward Nygma/The Ridder) at “The History of Batman” Panel announced that series writer Alan Burnett is preparing an audio drama treatment for the franchise. As to what to expect, Kevin only remarked “It’s a great script and it brings back the [original cast.]” Further excitement was generated by the news that Academy-Award Winning Composer Danny Elfman would write the theme, as he had done so for the 1989 film, which was adapted for the animated title theme.

As to Glover’s Riddler, the actor noted that “[Nygma has] evolved in many [ways. He] understands he’s on the spectrum.”

Debuting on Fox in 1993 on the heels of the successful Tim Burton films, Batman: The Animated Series. Burnett, fellow writer Paul Dini and producer/artist Bruce Timm broke all the rules with its grounded storytelling, unique moody “Dark Deco” style, mature psychological twists, stellar voice work, and faithfulness to the source material. Audio drama format should be no problem for the cast, as Voice Director Andrea Romano cast these amazing actors and ran sessions in the recording studio like a radio drama. The series also debuted Harley Quinn, whose bit part soon caught fire and a fan following that led to her breaking into the regular comics continuity. It even redesigned Mister Freeze’s origin, turning him from a one-dimensional villain to a complex, tormented soul obsess with avenging the loss of his wife. That episode, “Heart of Ice,” was so well received it was nominated for an Emmy Award.

Besides two feature films, the foundation laid by the series and its sequel series – unofficially entitled Batman: Gotham Knights, with Tara Strong replacing Melissa Gilbert as Batgirl – provided the springboard for a shared universe, started by Superman: The Animated Series in 1996 on The WB network. Both were soon followed by the futuristic Batman Beyond, Justice League, Static Shock!, and Justice League Unlimited. Conroy reprised his role as The Dark Knight for all of these iterations, as his Batman voice became the gold standard for his successors as much as that of his arch-nemesis, The Joker, brought to life by the talented Mark Hamill. In fact, both repirsed their roles later in the Rocksteady Batman: Arkham video game series.

It is unknown at this point as to which members of the cast will be returning. Besides Hamill and Gilbert, other surviving members include Arleen Sorkin (Dr. Harleen Quinzell/Harley Quinn), Ron Perlman (Matt Hagen/Clayface), Paul Williams (Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin), Adrienne Barbeau (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Richard Moll (Harvey Dent/Two-Face) Diane Pershing (Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy), Helen Slater (Talia), Loren Lester (Dick Grayson/Nightwing), David Warner (Ra’s al Ghul), and Robert Costanzo. Sadly recasting will be required for the roles of Alfred Pennyworth and Commissioner Gordon as original portrayers Efram Zembalist Jr. and Bob Hastings, respectively, past away in recent years.

While this is not the first Batman audio drama, this embedded in the animated world that those who grew up in the 1990s and early 2000’s will definitely take note. More will be developed as it’s available, same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.

Batman Beyond may have been around since the late 90s, but the upcoming miniseries finally sees Terry McGinnis “go beyond.”

Batman Beyond – What Has Happened to The Original Dark Knight?

As teased in Batman: Urban Legends #7, Bruce Wayne is dead, and successor McGinnis sets about tracking down his killer and learn new secrets about Neo-Gotham in Batman Beyond: Neo Year. Co-written by Green Arrow scribes Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing with art by Max Dunbar, the story taps into the veins of The Long Halloween and Batman: Year One.

Dunbar explains, “We’re hoping to forge a new path forward into Neo Gotham in a way that fans of the show will love and be excited [to see.] There are familiar faces, but it is a time of great change in Neo Gotham. There will be plenty of new threats for Terry to face, as well as some old ones. Sebastian has managed to fuse the dark and brooding look of the animated series with his own take on cyberpunck tech noir that is nothing short of stunning. I feel so lucky to be working with him on this project.”

The largest game-changing element is Terry is, for the first time, on his own. For the bulk of his history, from celluloid to comic print, Bruce has been the guy in the bat-chair and in Terry’s ear. Fans of the cartoon have fond memories of voice actor Kevin Conroy playing the now-grisly billionaire hermit directing Terry (Will Friedel) in countless fights and investigations. Further, his DC comics run has seen additional supports from Dick Grayson, Commissioner Barbara Gordon, his girlfriend Dana, and even younger brother Matt. This creative team, however, strips Terry of those supports. “Terry is finding out what it means to truly be Batman, ” Dunbar elaborates. “He’ll feel for the first time what it means to be alone in a city that wants him dead. [Colorist Sebastian Cheng] has managed to fuse the dark and brooding look of the animated series with his own take on cyberpunk tech noir that is nothing short of stunning. I feel so lucky to be working with him on this project.”

As established in Urban Legends, the main antagonist is Neo Gotham itself. Not the people of Neo Gotham, but the actual city. The city, in all of its next generation technology and interconnectedness, is alive and has no room in town for a certain vigilante. For a hero whose greatest weapon is use of the shadows, where is there for Batman to hide when those shadows are alive? This bapstism of fire for Terry will test his mettle as never before.

But if Neo Gotham itself is the villain, what flesh-and-blood opponents are there for Terry to hit? Over the course of the character’s history, Terry has amassed memorable villains of his own. Fans can feel at ease as Max promises that rogues gallery will be respected, but also expanded. “Our number one priority with Neo-Year is to introduce new villains, new allies, and a new paradigm for Neo Gotham. Fans can expect the return of certain fan favorites like the Jokerz and Commissioner Barbara [Gordon,] but we’re taking this opportunity to forge a new era quite seriously. Bruce’s villains reflected his journing through mental health, obsession, and [tragedy. It’s] time Terry had a rogues gallery who reflected his path through legacy, lineliness, and hope.”

Catch the six-issue epic Batman Beyond: Neo-Year when it debuts April 5, 2022.

Sideshow Batman Beyond

Here’s the full description:

“Hey, I put my life on the line all the time.”

Sideshow presents the Batman Beyond Premium Format™ Figure, soaring his way into our line of DC Comics collectibles.

The Batman Beyond Premium Format™ Figure measures 21” tall as the sleek-suited Terry McGinnis jets off the top of a futuristic Gotham City base. Gone are the stone gargoyles of the past, updated into more technological gunmetal gray paneling with red accents befitting Batman’s own upgrades as the dark defender of the night.

The polyresin Batman Beyond Premium Format™ Figure features a fully sculpted Batsuit with detailed musculature and varied textures to reflect the armored and tactical elements of his costume. As the inheritor of Bruce Wayne’s heroic mantle, Terry McGinnis wears a silver utility belt and has striking red wings along with a red bat symbol on his chest, giving him a high-tech look. This highly-dynamic statue also features detailed elements of sculpted flame and rocket exhaust as Batman takes to the skies to tackle a new era of crime in Neo-Gotham.

The Exclusive Edition of the Batman Beyond Premium Format™ Figure includes an alternate animated portrait with a more streamlined cowl design and larger ear points. Animate your DC Comics collection with this exclusive display option.

The figure is expected to arrive summer 2020, and carries a price tag of $595. Head over to the Sideshow page to see a full photo gallery!

Catwoman was Terry McGinnis’s ‘Mother’ in Batman Beyond

Batman Beyond showed fans life in Neo-Gotham City and was a huge hit with fans and critics alike.  The one major thing fans never learned was the fate of Catwoman and now, we know why.

Towards the end of the series, it was revealed that Terry McGinnis was actually the biological son of Bruce Wayne and was conceived as part of a top secret project to insure that Gotham always had a Batman.

Terry McGinnis is the 'son' of Catwoman

At the 20th Anniversary panel of Batman Beyond during SDCC 2019, Batman Beyond co-creator Bruce Timm revealed that Catwoman was originally intended to be the great villain of the series and “mother” to Terry McGinnis.

“Catwoman was going to be our leading villain in the second movie…She was the one who cloned Bruce Wayne to create Terry, but that was going to be our big surprise in our next movie.”

Timm then went on to explain that Terry’s origins were eventually changed and Amanda Waller was revealed as the mastermind behind the Batman cloning process.  This was decided after plans for a second Batman Beyond movie were scrapped, leaving Return of The Joker as the series only stand alone movie and greatest storyline to date.

According to Timm, plans had Catwoman delivering the news to Bruce and Terry herself but being the main villain of the story, would have made Terry decide if he continued to follow in his fathers footsteps as the hero of Neo-Gotham or his “mother” and become one of the greatest villains in the history of the Batman mythos.

While it’s true that Bruce had no hand in raising Terry he was still Terry’s biological father.  Despite not birthing him, it would have through Selina’s actions that Terry was created making Terry her son in spirit.  Terry would have truly been “Bat” by blood and “Cat” in spirit.

DC has announced an upcoming “Old Lady Harley” miniseries.

Following an aged Harley Quinn, years into retirement from disbanding her savage Harley Gang from the streets of New York City, She contemplates her life in a series of flashbacks depicting what truly happened between her and her longtime lover, The Joker. A new group rises in Gotham claiming to be lead by the Clown Prince of Crime and begin to stalk the now aged acrobat. Harley must decide between asking for help from President Powergirl or flee to the 51st state, Atlantis.

Writer Frank Tieri will helm the series who said “Think of it this way… if HARLEY QUINN #42 was your appetizer, then OLD LADY HARLEY, that’s your main course right there, Your big, fat, prime rib with a fully loaded baked potato, creamed spinach with everything is covered in gravy.”

This won’t be the first time we have seen an aged Harley. In the Batman Beyond film of the early 2000s, Return of The Joker, Harley is seen at the end of the film bailing out her two granddaughters Delia and Deidre Dennis, otherwise known as Dee Dee.

How do you feel about seeing an older Harley come to life? Who else would you like to see join the series? Could we see an aged Batman as well?
