It’s finally happened, DC Universe Infinite is going international! The original app launched in the US back in September 2018, although it’s undergone a few changes since its inception.  Initially, the service was used for streaming DC shows and movies but also offered the option to read comics digitally.  The streaming content was removed in January 2021 and the app was updated to contain just comics. Now, after more than 3 years, DC Universe Infinite will be available outside of the US.

Here’s what DC Senior Vice President and General Manager, Anne Leung DePies, had to say on DC.com:

DC is thrilled to soon welcome comic book fans from other countries to our digital service for the first time. Making DC UNIVERSE INFINITE available globally is one of our major priorities and this launch is the first of many more to come. It is one more way fans of every generation around the world can engage with DC’s iconic Super Heroes!

At the time of writing this article, the app is already live in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. DC Universe Infinite will reach UK shores on April 28, 2022, with Brazil and Mexico currently scheduled for Summer 2022.

Loads of DC content

Fans will have access to over 25,000 comics from DC’s archives,  right up to modern-day (6 months after retail release) as well as access to digital-first comics on the day of release (such as Harley Quinn: The Animated Series: The Eat. Bang! Kill. Tour, Suicide Squad: King Shark). Prices released so far are as follows:

Fans who sign-up for an annual subscription to DC UNIVERSE INFINITE during the first 30 days of each country’s launch are able to subscribe for $59.99 CAD (+tax), $64.99 AUD, $64.99 NZD and £36.99 BPS a year. Anyone that utilizes the introductory pricing will be able to renew at the same price, as long as they maintain their paid subscription. After the first 30 days, annual subscriptions will be available for $89.99 CAD (+tax), $99.99 AUD & $99.99 NZD or £54.99 a year. Monthly subscriptions are also available for $9.99 CAD (+tax), $9.99 AUD, $9.99 NZD and £6.99 BPS. Pricing for Brazil and Mexico will be announced at a later date.

Not only will DC fans get access to a depth of comic content but there is also the online DC Universe Infinite community where fans can discuss all of the latest DC comics news and gossip.

The Legacy of DEL CLOSE came to San Diego this past weekend. Utopia was pleased to announce that FOR MADMEN ONLY, a feature documentary that places improv guru Del Close front and center, is set for release on Altavod & Apple TV in the USA and Canada on July 27th, 2021.

In the film, Comedy guru Del Close, mentor to everyone from Bill Murray to Tina Fey, sets out to write his autobiography for DC Comics. As he leads us through sewers, mental wards, and his peculiar talent for making everyone famous but himself, Close emerges as a personification of the creative impulse itself. He’s a muse with BO and dirty needles, offering transcendence despite (or because of) the trail of wreckage behind him.

In this hilarious and poignant look at the life of the godfather of improv comedy, Del Close, Festival alum Heather Ross (Girls on The Wall) tracks the trailblazer from “human torch” sideshow act, to his influential and contentious rise at The Second City, mentoring such greats as Bill Murray, John Candy, and Tina Fey, among many others.  Inspired by his semi-autobiographical DC Comics anthology, Wasteland, the film delves into the inner workings of Close’s wacky mind through inspired reenactments, archival clips, and interviews with such devotees as Bob Odenkirk, Tim Meadows, and Adam McKay. The result is a lively, multi-layered picture of a man and his mission, riding on the edges of genius and despair, creativity, and insanity.

Heather Ross said of her second feature documentary, “We knew that to make the definitive movie about this icon/unknown, we would need to take the same kind of creative risks that he was famous for. As someone known for breaking down genres and experimenting with form—not to mention playing fast and loose with the truth – we decided to apply the same ideas to our film and try to break new ground with the documentary genre.  This resulted in constructing a set of scenes imagining the creative process behind WASTELAND, Del’s comic book autobiography.”

Danielle DiGiacomo, Head of Content for Utopia, said, “For Madmen Only is a singular film reflecting a singular man – a creative and joyful exploration of one of the lesser sung heroes in all of comedy; we at Utopia can’t wait for viewers to be taken on a much needed escape into hilarity and genius.”

Founded in 2018, Utopia Media is a film distribution and sales company with a ‘filmmaker first’ approach, co-founded by filmmaker Robert Schwartzman.  Recent Utopia titles include official Sundance 2020 selection Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets; celebrated fashion documentary House of Cardin; Academy Award Winner Errol Morris’ American Dharma; Annabelle Attanasio’s Cannes breakout, Mickey and the Bear, starring Camila Morrone; Tim Heidecker’s Adult Swim comedy, Mister America; Liam Firmager’s portrait of trailblazing singer-songwriter Suzi Quatro in Suzi Q; and, the 4K restoration of Hal Needham’s 1986 cult-classic, RAD, among others. Upcoming releases include the official SXSW 2020 comedy Golden Arm; documentary on the improv legend Del Close: For Madmen Only; the TIFF breakout feature Shiva Baby; and more.

DEL CLOSE did many works with John Ostrander. You can find out more about the legacy of  DEL CLOSE’ and his book Wasteland on DC UNIVERSE INFINITE.

The Monkey Prince Has Arrived!  DC Comics’ upcoming Festival of Heroes will introduce a new Monkey Prince superhero to the mythos of DC.  The company will release its 100-page DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration commemorative anthology on May 11 and one of the 11 stories inside will tell the tale of a new superhero, Monkey Prince. This hero is inspired by the Monkey King of Chinese mythology and will be the star of the 12-page story, “The Monkey Prince Hates Superheroes.”

Debuting in a story written by award-winning writer Gene Luen Yang (Superman Smashes the Klan, Batman/Superman, New Super-Man) with art by Benard Chang (Teen Titans, Batman Beyond), Monkey Prince is inspired by the Monkey King, legendary hero of Chinese mythology and the classic tale, Journey to the West,” a release from DC reads.  “In Yang and Chang’s original 12-page story, ‘The Monkey Prince Hates Superheroes,’ Monkey Prince battles and teams up with Shazam to defeat both the evil Dr. Sivana and a Chinese deer demon spirit.”

Monkey Prince is inspired by the same Monkey King from Chinese mythology featured in Game Science’s Black Myth: Wukong video game, which received a new trailer focused on bosses, enemies, areas in the game, and spells last month.

To celebrate this character’s arrival to the DC Comics universe, the publisher is releasing a special, 1 in 25, Monkey Prince variant cover by Chang. This Asian superhero celebration anthology will feature 10 other stories about Asian superheroes and it will arrive to comic book stores and digital platforms on May 11, 2021.

Other characters featured in the anthology include stories starring Batgirl Cassandra Cain, Green Lantern Tai Pham, Cheshire, Katana, and more.

DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration is an incredible celebration anthology spotlighting DC’s past, present, and even future Asian super heroes, featuring some of the most dynamic Asian storytellers in and out of comics,” the release reads. “Featuring an incredible cover by the team of DC Publisher and Chief Creative Officer, Jim Lee, and colorist Alex Sinclair, this anthology includes a foreword by activist and CNN and WSJ Online contributor, Jeff Yang, a selection of tribute pinups of DC’s Asian super heroes, plus an awesome variant cover featuring Cassandra Cain by artist Stanley ‘Artgerm’ Lau.”
