Returning to Harrogate Convention Centre, Thought Bubble will take place over November16th and 17th for one of the most important and beloved events in the international comics calendar.  Featuring hundreds of comic creators and thousands of fans, Thought Bubble is a true festival of comics and comic art with some of the world’s most influential and exciting creators regularly making their way to Yorkshire for the event.

Now firmly at home in Harrogate Convention Centre, Thought Bubble enjoyed a 28% increase in attendance from 2022 to 2023, beating 2019 sales for the first time since the pandemic as the event goes from strength to strength with over 500 comic-creating exhibitors, 30 comics focused panels and workshops, and thousands of visitors.

With similar capacity crowds expected again this year, November will see the first time Thought Bubble attendees will be able to collect their tickets early thanks to box office desks set up in independent venues around Harrogate on the Friday evening, as well as the opening of a second entrance in the convention center. This early collection will cut down queuing time on the first day of the convention as well as encourage Thought Bubble fans to explore and support more independent Harrogate businesses.

Alongside the convention, the Thought Bubble festival will return this year with a mix of free and ticketed events taking place around Leeds and Yorkshire from 11 – 17 November, including film screenings, public art, workshops, talks, and much more.

Tickets for the Thought Bubble Comic Convention are on sale now with newly introduced ticket options for families and students, while for children under 12, carers, and those over 65 tickets remain totally free. Tickets give access to all events within the comic convention weekend; panels, workshops, guest signings, as well as the three huge halls of over 400 exhibitors, publishers, and much more to be announced.

Thought Bubble will share details on guests, and exhibitors and reveal their 2024 program over the coming months.

]]>
Batman Unmasked is the UK’s first event of its kind, an unprecedented collection of Batman memorabilia from the character’s long and storied history. Iconic items from across the comics and films were all on display like a museum of the Bat. This is the perfect way to celebrate Batman Day and the 15th Anniversary of the release of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Furthermore, there’s plenty for Bat-fans of all ages to interact with. I had a good long rummage through all the treasure, and this is what I saw.

The entire space from the outside was decorated like a beacon to Batman. It’s one part museum and one part interactive immersion space. The area downstairs is an atmospheric recreation of the Batcave where a mighty, eight-screen Batcomputer shows newsreels from when the Tumbler was in Trafalgar Square, and a glowing podium around rocky cave walls where one could imagine Batman standing, ready to go forth and dispense justice on Gotham City.

We also get that and the creepy insight into the Joker’s insanity in “The Joker Room”, which I’ll leave for you to discover on your own visit.

The majority of the Batman Unmasked venue serves as both a museum and a sale space. After the airy and welcoming cave, you’re greeted by the immense motorcycles used by two different Bat-men. Their costumes loom over you, tall and imposing, and their gadgets are laid out for all to see. These are not replicas. Each item has a card saying it was used or worn by the many actors who have played Batman, and in which film it featured.

The event showcased props from all the way back to Michael Keaton’s first legendary appearance in Batman ’89 to his action-packed return in The Flash in 2023. I do mean it when I say sale space. Each item is for sale, but unless you have a Clooney-esque Bat Credit Card, it’s out of the price range for many of us regular citizens.

After the truly terrifying Joker Room, you get the final main hall where the cowls of every Batman are on display, next to the costumes of multiple Jokers. Some of Lego’s finest stand side by side with Nintendo Switches loaded up with Arkham City.

The floor mural of a detailed map of Gotham City is almost lost in its crowning jewel, the Comic Book Library. The shelves are full of single issues, facsimiles, and trade paperbacks from across Batman’s history. Sealed issues of Batman: Fortnite are also there, next to this week’s release of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham #1. Trades of Year One and The Long Halloween can be found alongside the Dan Jurgens’ run of Batman Beyond and the numerous crossovers with Scooby-Doo and the Ninja Turtles.

This library is the true, genius MVP of the event. Most of the general public will be lured in by the grand scope of the Batcave and Joker rooms, and gawk at the details of the costumes and gadgets. They’ll have their fun looking at the Lego or playing Arkham, but the fact the event ends with the comics is incredibly important.

Most people who love the movies will get to leave with new Batman reading material of their own, bringing fresh readers to the comics. At the same time, for an enfranchised fan such as myself, the very newest releases are right there among true Bat treasures.

Batman Unmasked is an event like no other. This is the first pop-up of its kind, and they’ve done everything to make sure it’s rightly unforgettable, starting with the magic of the movies and then leading us to the masterful comic-book storytelling that made it all possible. If it goes well this year, then it’ll come back bigger, better, and Battier.

Entry to Batman Unmasked is the hottest ticket in town and the show’s only on from September 15th-17th, so you need to check it out for yourself right here!

Here is the Scott Snyder – DC Comics News Exclusive Interview. Scott is synonymous with Batman. His runs on Detective Comics, the main Batman title, All-Star Batman, Dark Nights: Metal, Death Metal, and others, are now legendary. He’s also a writer who’s also changed the face of the entire DC Universe.

He’s also worked on Swamp Thing and written a multitude of creator owned independent comics that are loved by millions. Nocterra, Barnstorming, and American Vampire are just a few of the titles he’s co-created.

One thing that fans may not know is how much he supports independent comic stores, champions physical, printed comics and shares his love of sites, like DC Comics News, and our sister sites, Dark Knight News and Fantastic Universes.

I was fortunate enough to finally meet him in the flesh at this year’s Thought Bubble convention. We talked about several of his brand-new projects for ComiXology, including a monthly series with his son, Jack. He proved that, when it comes to comics fans and Scott Snyder, you really should meet your heroes.

Scott Snyder – DC Comics News Exclusive Interview

Thought Bubble started life in November 2007 as a one-day event, an idea sparked by renowned comic artist Tula Lotay (aka Lisa Wood). At the time Lisa worked in a Leeds comic book shop, Travelling Man. Travelling Mans Director, Nabil Homsi, encouraged Lisa to get Thought Bubble going, he gave guidance and financial support to make it happen. The first convention took place in the basement of Leeds Town Hall. The following year the convention grew, and then grew again and again.

From the very beginning Thought Bubble’s ethos has been to celebrate comics and the people who make them. This focus on comics, the creators and the fans make Thought Bubble a unique kind of festival, especially loved by comic creators themselves! This leads to a consistently high caliber of talent at our annual comic convention.

With humble beginnings, Thought Bubble has gone from strength to strength, with an unparalleled reputation and a growth built primarily on word of mouth and a deep love of comics and the people who make them. Now the event has grown to a huge week-long festival and attracts thousands of attendees and guests from around the world.

Look out for our interview with James Tynion IV, also from Thought Bubble 2022.

James Tynion IV is one of the most acclaimed and respected writers in comics. He’s written Detective Comics, Batman, Justice League Dark, and many others for DC. His move over to creator-owned work with Substack made headlines, and he’s one of the most prolific writers in the business.

Department of Truth, Something Is Killing The Children, and The Nice House On The Lake are series that are loved by fans and critics alike. James’ work on Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country, for DC Black Label, has also proven to be a smash hit.

I attended the Thought Bubble convention this past weekend, where I was lucky enough to talk to James about his work on Substack, and we also got news about both The Nice House On The Lake and Nightmare Country… but that’s enough from me, let’s hear from James!

James Tynion IV – DC Comics News Exclusive Interview

Thought Bubble is, in my opinion, the UK’s best comic convention. Unlike some of the other shows, which are all great but have comics as a secondary focus, Thought Bubble is all, 100% comics centric. It attracts the biggest names in the business and is the warmest, friendliest con there is.

This show feels like it’s run by family.

Look out for our exclusive interview with Scott Snyder, also from the Thought Bubble convention!

Comics fans in the UK don’t have Thanksgiving to fill the gap between Halloween and Christmas. What we do have to look forward to, however, is Thought Bubble 2022, the biggest (and best) purely comics-based convention of its kind.

This is a show that isn’t all about TV, movies, and video games and that also covers comics… oh, no. Thought Bubble is totally, 100% comics focused. This is what makes it this particular fan’s favorite show of the year.

I mean, check out the guest list!

  • Scott Snyder
  • Gail Simone
  • James Tynion IV
  • Ram V
  • Dan Watters
  • Jock
  • Christian Ward
  • Cecil Castellucci
  • Sean Phillips
  • Richard Starkings
  • Martin Simmonds
  • Si Spurrier
  • G. Willow Wilson

and many, many more!

As well as this cornucopia of comics creatives, the show will also feature the usual favorite activities, cosplay, panels, competitions, stalls, vendors, displays and much more besides.

I was fortunate enough to represent DC Comics News, and our sister sites Dark Knight News and Fantastic Universes last year, so am delighted to be doing the same for Thought Bubble 2022.

Whether you’re a fan of DC, Marvel, Image, BOOM!, Dark Horse, Aftershock, Ahoy, Comixology, Manga, Superheroes, Horror, Romance, or all of the above, Thought Bubble is guaranteed to have something you’ll love.

So, don’t let the winter blues get you down. Head on up to Harrogate and let this wonderful convention warm your heart, stimulate your mind, and delight your eyes. Some of the best writers and artists in the business will be there, as well as the greatest fan-sites in the world.

Will you be there this year? If so, you’re guaranteed a great time, and please say hello if you see us there!

Batman: The Audio Adventures had a panel at this year’s NYCC! Stars Jeffery Wright and Bobby Moynihan were joined by writer/producer Dennis McNicholas to talk about the second season of the popular scripted podcast, that debuted on Oct 7th, so it’s very fitting that there would be a panel to promote it.

The second season of Batman: The Audio Adventures has been described as:

“Gotham City’s cauldron of crime and corruption is about to boil over. While The Joker remains at large, criminal kingpins and former rivals The Penguin and Two-Face have joined forces – and the mysterious narco-terrorist known as Scarecrow remains unidentified, even as his chemical nightmares plague the city.

The schism between Batman and Catwoman grows ever larger as both escalate their separate wars on crime, threatening dire consequences for both.

Harleen Quinzel (aka Harley Quinn) is living for a love that’s slowly killing her, just waiting for inspiration to strike.

In the new miniseries, a string of attacks has plagued Gotham’s seedy underbelly, sending criminals into a panic, but it’s not Batman who is striking the heart of the city — it’s a group of mysterious assailants on the hunt for an ancient artifact.

As Batman hunts down the assassins, he finds clues that keep drawing him to their true goal: the sword of King Scimitar.”

We didn’t get much more than that from the tight-lipped panelists, though they did play a few clips. Judging by what we heard, this season will be as funny and exciting as the first.

One thing everyone on the panel could agree on is what an honor it is to be involved with the Batman universe. Moynihan said he was more nervous playing the penguin than any other role he’s ever taken. McNicholas also shared how seriously he took the story.

Jeffery Wright reminisced about all the time he has spent in the bat world. His time playing James Gordon in The Batman and reading comics really helped him in creating this version of Batman. If you haven’t already, you really need to check out this podcast.
