DC has been knocking it out of the park with their books for young readers, and that trend shows no signs of slowing down! DC held a panel to highlight its young readers line at this year’s San Diego ComicCon .

Writers and artists discussed their upcoming books including Nicole Maines, Sina Grace and Jeffery Brown. Maines, known to most fans as Dreamer on Supergirl, was there to talk about Bad Dream: A Dreamer Story. Sina Grace shared his excitement over his upcoming book Superman: The Harvests of Youth. Penelope and Jerry Gaylord chatted about Diana and the Hero’s Journey and Clark & Lex. With all that star power there were bound to be some special announcements, and the panel did not disappoint! Jeffrey Brown is writing a sequel to his Batman and Robin and Howard middle-grade graphic novel, it will be called Batman and Robin and Howard: Summer Breakdown. It will be a 3-issue comic book series and will arrive in March of 2024.

To top it all off, Sherri L. Smith showed up as a secret guest. She will be writing her first DC graphic novel. it will be aimed at middle schoolers and will be titled Lightning: Changes. Lily J Allen will be doing the art. Lightning: Changes will focus on a young Jennifer Pierce as she deals with a rough summer. Safe to say the rest of the Black Lightning family will be involved! Lightning: Changes will hit stores in the fall of 2024! Check out a few preview images below!

Both Warner Bros and Marvel Studios will be skipping San Diego comic-con@home. Given the success of Fandome it doesn’t come as a shock that Warner’s wants to be in total control of the narrative and presentation of it’s new film projects. Disney’s Investor Days has also proven to be a powerful tool for getting info out on new projects. The COVID pandemic forced film companies to rethink how they do business and it appears Warner and DC are adjusting with the times. Are we seeing the birth of a new normal where more companies have their own events? Time will tell!

In happier news Warner Bros. TV’s will have DC’s Legends of Tomorrow participating at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con@Home. Also, DC Publishing division will have a presence at the virtual event.

Fandome will return October, 16.

Comic-Con International : San Diego has decided to online for it’s other annual event, Wondercon. This does not come as a surprise as the world still deals with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The in-person WonderCon event normally hosts 60,000+ people annually at the Anaheim Convention Center.

“We have hoped that by now, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic might have subsided enough that we could once again come together in person for a traditional WonderCon event. Sadly, as we continue to monitor the latest information from healthcare officials, we have determined the interest of public safety will prevent this spring’s WonderCon from moving forward as an in-person convention,” the organization has announced.

2021 WonderCon will now be an online convention like last year, scheduled to take place March 26 and 27.

“The challenges of this past year and the postponement of our two largest events have left us with limited financial resources, therefore WonderCon@Home will be a two-day celebration instead of the usual three days as we continue to marshal our resources for Comic-Con this summer,” the convention organization adds.

So it looks like plans are moving forward for the San Diego con scheduled for July 21-25.

The post SDCC 2020: Snyder & Capullo Go In Depth On The Robin King appeared first on DC Comics News.

]]>
The Robin King was mentioned during the Day 2 panel of DC @ Home with artwork by Greg Capullo. Writer Scott Snyder and Capullo talked a little bit about how fun it is to create such an evil character.

All Hail The Newborn Robin King

During their virtual panel for Comic Con, Snyder and Capullo were talking extensively about Dark Knights: Death Metal. Among other things, when Snyder began to tease twisted take on Robin, Capullo quickly showed off some sketches he had done of the character.

If you look at the YouTube video below and click towards 17:39 of the video to get a good look.

The Boy Wonder No More

One of the really interesting aspects of the character according to the creators is how despicable his actions are. The creators mentioned how in this ‘Darkverse’, this Robin exhumed the body of The Flash. Once he had the body in his possession, he taunted Barry Allen with it.

Another story they shared was how the Alan Scott version of Green Lantern had two kids. Not only were their bodies defiled but they were turned into dust and packed into a Black Lantern ring!

When the series editor Marie Javins asked them about such actions, Snyder and Capullo felt that it was necessary for the story. In their mind, the more evil you make the character, the more harrowing and necessary it becomes for the heroes to overcome them.

Dynamic Duo

It should come as no surprise to the DC Faithful that Snyder and Capullo make a great team. It wasn’t like that in the beginning when Snyder had a more hands on approach to paneling which perturbed Capullo. However since then, they have become one of the best creative teams in all of comics.

For Snyder, he loves to come up with whatever his mind can come up with because he know that Capullo can deliver. Snyder had no issue coming up with a disturbing portrayal of Dr. Manhattan because he knew Capullo would meet the challenge.

Here’s hoping for many more collaboration from these two.

Today, IGN and San Diego Comic-Con announced an exclusive collaboration to bring entertainment and pop culture’s largest annual event to the digital livestream landscape with Comic-Con@Home on IGN Live, taking place July 22 – 26. This is the first time in San Diego Comic-Con’s 50-year history that all of the panel programming will air online in a livestreamed format, with IGN at the forefront of helping to make that happen.

“It has been a learning and growing experience for all of us, having to shift to a fully-digital event this year,” said David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer of Comic-Con International. “IGN completely stepped up and has helped us navigate and finalize this new approach to ensuring our programming goes off without a hitch, is interactive and engaging, and can be seen by everyone — they have knocked it out of the park and I can’t wait for fans to see it come to life!”

IGN will air a selection of panels during the convention’s live broadcast in association with San Diego Comic-Con as well as studio and network partners. In addition, IGN will broadcast its own custom programming throughout the event titled “Comic-Con@Home on IGN Live,” which will include exclusive interviews, trailer breakdowns, expert analysis, and more. Topics will cover Comic-Con mainstays such as film, TV, comics, gaming, cosplay and collectibles.

“We know this world inside and out, so to have the chance to collaborate with San Diego Comic-Con to bring their programming to a huge online audience was such a natural fit,” said Terri Schwartz, Director of Content Strategy and Partnerships at IGN. “We’re thrilled to continue to bring what we do best to the Comic-Con circuit, albeit under very different circumstances than previous years.”

IGN will be distributing select Comic-Con@Home panels across its suite of platforms, including: IGN.com, IGN’s YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Twitch, as well as Comic-Con’s YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and the Comic-Con@Home website. Additionally, IGN will create custom programming for the event to be aired on Snapchat, Instagram and OTT platforms.

San Diego Comic-Con Addresses Coronavirus

Comic-Con International, the group that runs the pop culture phenomenon that is the San Diego Comic-Con, released a statement over the weekend via their Twitter account related to how the Covid-19 pandemic will affect this year’s event.

Broken into two tweets, they collectively read:

To our amazing Comic-Con and WonderCon fans: We understand how difficult the current climate has been for all of us and appreciate your continued support through these trying times. No one is as hopeful as we are that we will be able to celebrate #SDCC2020 together come July. As we continue to monitor the situation with local authorities, we will post updates on our social channels! Until then, remember: “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” — Christopher Reeve

WonderCon 2020, the Los Angeles-based, April equivalent setup by the same group was already postponed, with no rescheduling date set.

We’ve included the initial tweets below:

Many in the industry were wondering how Comic-Con addresses the situation, and their questions have been answered.

Comic-Con has always been an enormous draw for the comic book industry. I always remember being a teenager and thinking San Diego felt like galaxies away whenever I would see their ads. To my knowledge, the convention has never been postponed since its move to San Diego in 1991.

Over the last decade and a half, it has become more of a celebration of general pop-culture, with studios showcasing their big movie and tv releases.

For more news about how this tragic pandemic affects our beloved comic book industry, stay tuned to DC Comics News.

Variety writer Matt Donnelly has confirmed in a tweet that DC will bring its movies to Comic-Con 2020. It came to many as a shock that DC said it would not be at Hall H this year, especially considering all the projects it has going on from Joker to Wonder Woman 84. But, don’t despair DC fans. It looks like we will get more DC movies at Hall H next year. in a way this does make sense as DC decides the future of it’s films, maybe they aren’t quite ready to show us anything yet. While Warner Bros. won’t be presenting at Hall H this year, they will still have a presence at Comic-Con 2019. The DC booth, which usually is separate, is joining the Warner Bros. Booth at Comic-Con for one massive presence on the show floor. Check out the tweet below!
