During this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival‘s “Share With” session, Suzanna Makkos (Executive Vice President, Original Comedy and Adult Animation, Max and Adult Swim) revealed the Max Original Adult Animation Slate, and among the shows talked about were season four of the acclaimed series Harley Quinn, and the upcoming Kite Man spin-off series.

According to Makkos, Harley Quinn will return for its fourth season this summer, and will presumably pick up after the events of season three — Poison Ivy is running the Legion of Doom, Harley Quinn has given up villainy, Bruce Wayne is in prison for tax evasion, and Batgirl is leading the Bat Family (which now includes Harley). What kind of insanity will result from all of this? You’ll have to wait until season four to find out.

Makkos also confirmed that the Kite Man spin-off is still on the way, and has a new name — Kite Man: Hell Yeah! Originally titled Noonan’s, this series will center on the HQ side character (and former fiance of Poison Ivy), Kite Man, and his time running Noonan’s bar, which is seen numerous times throughout Harley Quinn. It was revealed that the series will highlight the titular character even further as he teams up with iconic DC rogues like Bane and Lex Luthor.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah! has already received a series order for ten episodes and may possibly get set up in the upcoming fourth season of Harley Quinn.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah! does not have an official release date set yet for Max.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy on Valentine's Day

[Editor’s Note: This review may contain spoilers]

Directed by: Cecilia Aranovich & Jennifer Coyle

Written by: Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker & Dean Lorey

Starring: Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, James Adomian, and others

Summary

To celebrate their first ever Valentine’s Day, Harley Quinn strives to plan the greatest, most romantic night ever for herself and Poison Ivy. Heroes and villains of Gotham City and beyond also take part in the celebration of love, the aims to achieve the most gushiest, mushiest and most romantic day of the year, in the new Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special.

Positives

If you’re a fan of the hit TV Series, which has now completed its third season, then you’ll enjoy this “Special”, which has a sense of logical flow from the events of the latest season. It is quite possibly one of the most vulgar and outrageous story-lines to ever come from DC animations. As per the title, it follows mainly Harley Quinn (Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) on their Valentine’s date, where utter chaos and extreme humour follow suite. If you’re not familiar with the TV series, Harley and her band of friends often make many fourth wall breaks, and this is no different. I’ve tried best to avoid any major plot spoilers.

Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special

Though, if I did want to break it up, the 44-minute episode features three main groups, Harley & Ivy, Clayface, and Bane. Clayface’s (Alan Tudyk) story follows him preparing for a date with a new match from a dating app (even against Ivy’s remarks that it might be a catfish), and Bane (James Adomian) who randomly happens to stumble across a date whilst being in the city alone.

The craziness of the adventure begins when Harley purchases a spell from Etrigan the Demon to impress Ivy in the bedroom. The unfortunate side effects of the spell are realized when Ivy releases her pheromones into the Gotham skyline. This causes the people and animals of the city to not hold back their inhibitions (to put terms politely). Meanwhile, Clayface is on a journey of self-discovery and self-love. Bane is faced with a self conscious issue and visits Etrigan to get some help with a certain something being disproportionate with the size of his body. Unfortunately for Bane, this has hilarious side effects when mixed with Ivy’s pheromones.

Valentine’s Day Highlights

A personal highlight throughout the episode was the various super couples giving testimonials about their romances: Superman and Lois Lane, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Killer Croc and Enchantress, Aquaman and Mera, Darkseid and Kimberly Guilfoyle (random, but also funny).

If you’re a big Brett Goldstein fan, he has quite the important part to play in the overall plot.

Superman and Lois in the Harley Quinn Valentine’s Day Special

Negatives

No real negatives for this animated special, other than it being pretty much the length of a double episode, so it is much shorter than many other DC animated films. The themes and tone of the special, in particular, are very mature, and definitely wouldn’t be recommended to younger audiences.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy kiss in the Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine’s Day Special

Verdict

The story is a great and I enjoyed the small jokes within the Valentine’s Day themes of love and romance. Bane’s predicament is utterly hilarious and tied in nicely with the larger story about Harley trying to impress Ivy. The plot holds nothing back and features strong adult themes and references. However, this stays true to the genre and the audience that the series has focused on within the first three seasons. It’s lots of fun and worth the watch for any fans of the series.

Score: 4/5

Harley and her best girl are back in a brand-new trailer for the third season of Harley Quinn.

The latest trailer that dropped for the third season of the HBO hit animated series starring Kaley Cuoco revealed to fans what to expect. Picking up from where the second season left off, Harley and Ivy are officially a couple after a shaky start. And shaky is putting it mildly in the world of the former Dr. Harleen Quinzell. From she and Ivy sleeping together twice when Ivy was engaged to Kite-Man, to Commissioner Gordon ambushing the wedding of Ivy to Kite-Man to take back a villain-controlled Gotham, the road to Ivy and Quinn getting on the same page had been as topsy-turvy as the inmates in Arkham Asylum. Now, three weeks after they officially got together, these ladies are bringing the band back together for Ivy’s ecoterrorist plot. The trailer also reveals the debut of Nightwing to the show, as well as a possible antihero turn for Harley that contradicts her girlfriend’s agenda. There is even a callback to “A Death in The Family” when the Joker’s thrown in the trailer.

Besides Cuoco in the title role, returning are Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, Alan Tudyk as The Joker/Clayface/Calender Man/Condiment King/Doctor Trap, Jason Alexander as Sy Borgman, Tony Hale as Doctor Psycho/Felix Faust, Ron Fuches as King Shark, J.B. Smoove as Frank The Plant, James Adomian as Bane, Diedrich Bader as Batman, Christopher Meloni as Commissioner Gordon, and Briana Cuoco as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl. New to the cast this year is Harvey Guillen offering his voicework to Dick Grayson/Nightwing.

Catch the third season of Harley Quinn when it debuts July 28th on HBO.

Red Claw enters Selina Kyle’s world again, only this time it’s not the world of Batman: The Animated Series.

The international terrorist leader makes her official DCU debut in the pages of Catwoman #43. Six issues into her run as writer, Tini Howard has not only brought Selina back to her illicit adventures but has brought back an old nemesis: Black Mask. As fans remember, Black Mask is responsible for the psychological trauma inflicted on Selina’s sister, Maggie. Further, he has commissioned the services of an assassin to deal with her once and for all: Red Claw.

Fans may remember Red Claw as one of the main antagonists in the 1992 Batman: The Animated Series two-part story “The Cat and The Claw.” It was also Selina Kyle’s debut in the show (voiced by Adrienne Barbeau). Red Claw, herself, was voiced by Kate Mulgrew, later famous as Captain Katherine Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager.

The head of an international terrorist organization of the same name, Red Claw schemed to obtain a deadly virus to hold Gotham for ransom. Her alliance with a target of Selina Kyle’s brought the feline thief into the crossfire. Subsequently, she was defeated by Batman and Catwoman and the virus was destroyed.

She later returned in “The Lion and The Unicorn,” this time kidnapping Alfred and an old acquaintance of his from his British Secret Service days to extract nuclear launch codes. Although she succeeded in launching the missiles bound for London, Batman via the Batwing intercepted them, and she parachuted out of frame, never to be seen again. However, she had cameo appearances in both Batman: Gotham Adventures #3, and the crossover comic series, Batman: The Animated Series/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Her appearance also coincides with the 20th anniversary of BTAS this coming September.

Of course, however, she is not the only made-for-TV Batman to make the leap to DC canon. Guest star Harley Quinn is one of the most infamous creations to transcend the world of BTAS. After debuting in 1999’s standalone Batman: Harley Quinn #1, she eventually got her own series written by her co-creator, Paul Dini. From there, her star power reached a point where she leaped out of the comics and into primetime TV’s Birds of Prey, with Mia Sara in the role. However, Harley’s popularity truly took hold of the fan zeitgeist when actress Margot Robbie brought her to life in films like Suicide SquadBirds of Prey (And The Emancipation of Harley Quinn), and The Suicide Squad. Kaley Cuoco of The Big Bang Theory went on to both produce and voice the popular mature animated series Harley Quinn series with a third season on the way.

Red Claw Batman: TAS

Getting back to Red Claw, this is not the same character that debuted 20 years ago. For her official canon debut in the DCU, Howard has removed her organization and made her a deadly assassin-for-hire, who ambushes Selina and fellow antihero Harley Quinn in the locker room following a roller derby. While little is known about her background at this point, it is clear that things are about to get rough between her and her quarry. And although Selina has Harley as backup, can these two manage to outmatch this deadly killer-for hire?

Stay Tuned. Same Bat-Time, same Bat-Channel.

With the success of the Harley Quinn Animated series, it seems HBO Max is keen to expand on this. Series co-creator Patrick Schumacker has announced that they have begun work on a spin-off series. The title of the series will be Noonan’s (from the bar named after hitman, Sean Noonan). The focus of the new show will be Kite Man, a lovable character from the previous series.

On the panel; Not Kidding Around: Warner Bros. Animation and the Reimagining of Iconic Characters for an Adult Audience panel at SXSW, Schumacker said:

He tries to run the bar by himself, but it doesn’t turn out so easy. We have Harley and Ivy appear in the first episode, but after that we have with different goons and villains appearing every episode like Lex Luthor and Bane.

It will be kind of like Cheers for supervillains.

Spoilers from season 2 of Harley Quinn ahead

Given the nature of the Harley Quinn Animated series so far, a series revolving around various villains and rogues just hanging out at a bar sounds very entertaining. With endless possibilities when it comes to combinations of DC Characters it will allow for some unique stories. It seems to be fairly safe to assume this will follow on season 2 of HQTAS and will deal with Kite Man bouncing back following the breakdown of his relationship with Poison Ivy.

The Harley Quinn animated series (voiced by Kaley Cuoco) has been extremely popular amongst fans. We are eagerly awaiting information regarding season 3. Additionally, it has been reported as on track for a 2022 release. The show, which launched in 2019, was a new direction for the HBO Max/DC Brand. It gave a fresh and comedic take on iconic characters from the DC universe. With its adult humor and extremely violent content, it has now become a staple amongst DC programming. Its great news for fans that we get to see this universe expanded upon.

During DC FanDome, fans got a little tease of Season 3 of the smash hit animated series, Harley Quinn.

While there was no finished footage to present, fans still got to see multiple animatics from the new season. The first saw Harley (voiced by Kaley Cuoco) and Poison Ivy (voiced by Lake Bell) embarking on what they dub the “Eat, Bang, Kill” tour of Gotham City. Some of you may recognize that from the recent comic book miniseries, Harley Quinn: The Animated Series – The Eat, Bang, Kill Tour, that takes place directly after season 2, tying in to what we will see in season 3. You can check out the first three issues on DC Universe Infinite right now.

There are also quick looks at characters like King Shark, Clayface, Jim Gordon, and Dr. Psycho, as well as new characters, including Amanda Waller and one who appears to be Swamp Thing. Bane also makes an appearance, declaring he has come for revenge against Harley’s gang, and, of course, there’s an appearance by Kite Man.

They also released a fully animated promo still for season season. Check out the image and trailer below:

Harley Quinn was renewed for Season 3 in September 2020, with Season 2 having aired from April-June of that year. The show has received strong reviews for its first two seasons. Along with Cuoco and Bell, the show also features the voices of Alan Tudyk, Ron Funches, Tony Hale, Jason Alexander, and J.B. Smoove. The series was developed by Justin Halpern, Patrick Schumacker, and Dean Lorey, who also serve as executive producers along with Cuoco.

So be sure to catch up on the first two seasons, check out the comic, and if the mood strikes, you can even listen to our podcast, Mad Love: The Harley Quinncast, available on the DC Comics News Podcast Network.

The post Harley Quinn Season 3 Has Intimate Scene Shot Down By DC appeared first on DC Comics News.

]]>
The third season of HBO Max’s Harley Quinn is right around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited. However, it seems DC has stepped in to keep a specific scene from happening.

The scene in question? A moment where Batman and Catwoman share a very intimate moment with one another.

Just a warning, the following may be a bit graphic for some readers

“It’s incredibly gratifying and free to be using characters that are considered villains because you just have so much more leeway,” says Justin Halpern. “A perfect example of that is in this third season of ‘Harley’ [when] we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman. And DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.’ They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that.’ So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone.’”

This is such a ridiculous reasoning. First off, the toys they are talking about are most likely aimed at children… WHO SHOULDN’T BE WATCHING THIS SHOW ANYWAYS!! Second, if an adult who enjoys this series gets offended by this, then maybe this isn’t the show for them after all. We’ve literally seen characters go down on others in this show, but since they’re villains, it’s apparently alright.

However, this scene from Catwoman #1 is totally fine and doesn’t affect toy sales, right?

And what about these scenes with Green Arrow from the Kevin Smith comics run?

Or when Nightwing and Harley have sex in the animated film Batman & Harley Quinn.

Harley Quinn

DC’s obsession with toy sales is something that has hurt their product in the past. From the trainwreck that is Batman & Robin, to the cancellation of the Teen Titans animated series, and now this. They really need to focus more on the product at hand, and less on whether or not it’ll sell toys. Come up with better toy ideas, or better marketing strategies for their toy lines. But stifling creators on account of a little piece of plastic, for a show that the prime target demographic doesn’t even watch, is shortsighted, to say the least.

Harley Quinn Season Three is rumored to be hitting HBO Max later this year, with a 6-issue miniseries sequel to the season two finale coming in September.

In the original press release, Jefferson stated: “These two albums are meant to be listened to in order, in one sitting. As if, for example, you were binge-watching a tv show,” […] “Telling a story with only music is a different animal, so some tracks will come in a different order than they appear in the show, some things will take longer, and sometimes the lens will be focused differently than you’re used to. I took a lot of care to come up with track titles and an order that tells a version of the first two seasons of Harley.“

I recently had the opportunity to ask Jefferson Friedman a few questions and pick his brain about his work on the show, and how he managed to make such a diverse range of musical styles fit like a perfectly assembled crew. The Gotham of Harley Quinn has a sound unlike any Gotham we’ve seen before, all thanks to the creative handiwork of Jefferson Friedman and his team. Check out our conversation below.

KG: I love all of the titles of the tracks. I know that’s something you worked on personally. Where would you say the inspiration came from, and do you have a favorite title?

JF: I definitely have a favorite. It’s probably my favorite title of anything I’ve ever titled and it’s “Frankie Muniz Fanclub (Official),” because it just works perfectly for that track. It’s like the sickest, darkest, most evil track on the whole two records. But […] I mean, obviously that’s the track that’s horror music and so it’s referencing the fifth episode, which takes place in Harley’s brain and there’s all the little Harley’s running around, and they’re all [chuckles] obsessed with Frankie Muniz. So that’s why that’s called that. But if you listen to it, you know, it starts off with a delicate keyboard thing and then goes crazy. As far as other track names go, it was just a big combination- some things were very easy to name, like “Harlivy” was easy to name because it’s their love theme, you know? But […] I just tried to pick references or lines from the movie that are memorable but abstract. Let’s say what I wanted was, if you’re listening to a song and you’re like “I can’t remember where that’s from,” you can look at the title and be like “Oh, it’s called ‘Deuces’ and I remember that time when the Queen of Fables put up middle fingers and said ‘deuces’,” and then be like “Oh, that’s Queen of Fables’ music.

KG: So in the actual album, songs appear in a different order than they do in the show. You’ve said that that’s a different take on the same story. What was your narrative goal as a storyteller with switching that up?

JF: So, the way I thought of the two albums was that the beginning of the 1st album is sort of like a dramatis personae of the characters, right? You have to just let people know who the characters are, in any story you’re telling, and so the score is […] frontloaded with character themes for that reason. I think it also serves to sort of get the listener back into the world of Harley […] by reminding them of what these characters sound like and then continue on with the first record. It was like character development and sort of setting environments. So there are the heist tracks (which) put you in those scenes. There’s the fight scene tracks, which put you in those scenes. And then when it comes to season 2, now that’s all in place, right? Season 2 is then like a deep dive and actually has some kind of narrative. I think it’s basically in show order except for “Only love Sets Us Free,” which I pushed back to the very end because, for whatever reason, putting it where it happens in the show, the rest of the record felt anticlimactic to me after that. Because that’s the track that plays when Ivy and Harley escape from the pit and kiss for the first time […] and it’s just a giant piece of music, like it’s just so big that I felt everything after that kind of fell flat. And so I pushed it to the end of the record. Everything else on the season 2 [sound]track tells the story in show order.

KG: Do you have a favorite character from the show?

JF: Yeah, I think it’s King Shark.

KG: Same!

JF: It’s just, I love Ron Funches so much that he can’t do anything wrong, you know? He’s just so funny. And it’s so crazy… I think that a couple of characters on the show have become canon in a way that other characters in the show haven’t yet. I think people just think of King Shark on Harley now as King Shark. When Fandome happened and they showed the CG King Shark […] it looked just like King Shark from the show without his hoodie on and everyone was really excited that it looked the same. Honestly, I love all the characters on the show and the voice actors are great, but I still gotta go with King Shark.

It was an absolute pleasure to have the chance to speak with Jefferson and see some of the creative brilliance behind Harley Quinn up close. With any luck, the show will have a well-deserved season 3 on the horizon. Do you have a favorite song from the first two seasons?
