Looks like the Dead Boy Detectives moving to Netflix! Warner Bros has sold the rights to the streaming giant after they decided that it no longer fits their vision after James Gunn and Peter Safran put together plans for the future of DC on screen. It’s unknown if Netflix will decide to crossover the new series with The Sandman. The Dead Boy Detectives were originally part of The Sandman. Overall, it seems that this part of DC’s strategy moving forward of interconnectedness between films and television.

Given the  critical and commercial success of Netflix’s Sandman series, it makes sense that they would want the two series to connect and maybe even crossover at some point. With the announcement that upcoming The Sandman episodes not being called season 2, this also gives the  studio and creative team options on introducing the detectives to the world. Hopefully this means that Neil Gaiman will be involved in this show as well. This is a smart move for Warner. There is already a built in audience of Sandman fans, so why not introduce related characters on the same platform? The Dead Boy Detectives aren’t household names yet, but if these cards are played right, they could be.   No release date has been set for the debut of Dead Boy Detectives on Netflix  yet.

New DC Comic Book Series
‘The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives’
Launches December 27

Acclaimed horror writer James Tynion IV (Something Is Killing The Children, The Nice House On The Lake) has waited his whole career to pay tribute to the mythos of The Sandman, the work that made him the writer he is today, and now that time has come! With lush, gorgeous art from Redneck’s Lisandro Estherren and a who’s-who of superstar guest artists, The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country is designed to welcome new readers into one of the greatest worlds in DC’s library, The Sandman Universe.

To make welcoming new readers easier, the collected edition of The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country arrives in two different formats. The collectible hardcover release with cover art by Alex Eckman-Lawn will be available wherever books are sold and is packaged with a mini-print of the iconic Death, as illustrated by artist Jenny Frison.

A softcover edition with cover art by Reiko Murakami, priced as an easy jump-on point, will be available exclusively at direct market comic book stores. Both are out April 4, the same day as the launch issue of Nightmare Country’s spectacular follow-up miniseries, The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country – The Glass House!

James Tynion IV:

I’m thrilled to announce that Nightmare Country’s follow-up miniseries, The Glass House, is coming early in 2023.

The Corinthian is going to be making his way to Silicon Valley, where he will go head-to-head with Angels, Demons, and a breed of creature far more terrifying that anything he’s faced before, Venture Capitalists.

Lisandro and I are excited to continue this nightmare tour through modern America and can’t wait for you all to see what we’ve got in store for you.

The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country – The Glass House, launching on April 4, 2023, brings Tynion and Estherren back into DC’s The Sandman Universe with a new story and new setting for the second act of their DC Black Label epic. The series will continue featuring covers by Reiko Murakami, as seen above.

Launching between the first two Nightmare Country narratives is The Sandman Universe: Dead Boy Detectives by Pornsak Pichetshote (The Good Asian) and Jeff Stokely, featuring Thessaly the witch along with series regular ghost detectives Edwin and Charles.

Their investigation into a Thai American girl’s disappearance from her Los Angeles home puts them on a collision course with new and terrifying ghosts straight from Thai folklore that could give even a dead boy nightmares!

How exciting is that? As a fan of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Universe for over 30 years, this news is a dream come true.

As an added bonus, check out the main cover for Dead Boy Detectives #1 and the updated Sandman Universe reading guide, which now includes book six of the beautiful new collected editions!

Nightmare Country” – Chapter Six

Summary

After five amazing issues featuring the Corinthian, it’s all-change this month, as Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #6 shifts the spotlight to focus on Dream’s former lover, and everyone’s favorite witch, Thessaly.

Positives

It’s no secret that, as a huge fan of this universe from day one, I’ve really been enjoying this series. Having five incredible issues featuring The Corinthian was one thing, particularly with the wonderful Sandman TV show hitting the airwaves in the midst of it, but seeing another character from Neil Gaiman’s magnificent mythos making an appearance makes this issue incredibly special too.

Nightmare Country #6 works brilliantly, both as an intro for new readers, as well as a teaser for the forthcoming new Sandman Universe series, Dead Boy Detectives. As someone who’s loved these stories for over thirty years, seeing favorite characters again has been wonderful. Although the sad demise of the new Vertigo imprint (from 2018-2019, before transitioning to DC Black Label after 14 months, then ending completely in September 2021), broke the hearts of fans all over the world; Nightmare Country, the TV show, and the new Dead Boy Detectives book have made all our dreams of a continuing “Gaimanverse” come true.

James Tynion’s writing is, as always, pitch-perfect for a dark fantasy/horror tale. He’s captured Thessaly’s sense of self-importance and aloofness, as well as all her power and charisma. The fact that he’s also cleverly turned the horrific events of the previous five issues into the focus of a Hollywood movie for this sixth chapter is inspired. Only Tinseltown could transform the tragic death of a talented artist into melodrama.

The art and colors by Maria Lovet in this issue are similar enough in style to what’s come before, so as not to jar existing readers, yet different enough that this issue clearly feels like a new chapter in the ongoing series. The way she colors outside the lines adds a level of oddness and nostalgia that puts you on edge, while also reminding you of a more innocent, Ben-Day Dots era of years gone by. It’s very effective indeed.

As always, Simon Bowland’s letters and title pages give the issue, and the series as a whole, an identity, and feel unlike those of any other comic on the shelves.

Negatives

The way the issue ends leads readers to believe that this story won’t be continuing in these pages. Personally, I will be buying the new Dead Boy Detectives book, but not every fan may follow suit. I know that Thessaly will be part of the new series, but I’m hoping that her story with this issue’s new character, screenwriter Jamie Tyler, continues next month.

Verdict

Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #6 is a great issue. We get new characters, a terrific script, quirky art, and the return of an old favorite. The fact that this imprint will be growing with a second title (and hopefully more in the months and years to come) is a source of real joy.

WaterTower Music has announced the release of The Sandman: Season 1 (Soundtrack From the Original Netflix Series) which features music by composer David Buckley (The Good Wife, The Gifted). This 27-track score is available now on all major digital platforms for digital purchase and streaming.

Here are the composer’s thoughts:
The Sandman is an incredibly eclectic story spanning everything from other-worldly magic to deep trauma and horror but is always told with real human feelings.

The Sandman’s range of genres gave Buckley the opportunity to embrace a large palette for the score including full orchestra, choir, early music instruments, such as viola da gamba and baroque flutes, and some esoteric sounds. He combined historic classical music and instruments with modern electronic textures to bridge time within the music. One of the most notable experimentations is that of Dream’s theme, using bells to portray his character’s ruling of the sleeping world, reminding the viewer of a midnight chime. The bells are sometimes warped or dissonant, mimicking the inconsistency and eclecticism of dreams. As an Endless, Dream’s theme is ubiquitous, being used throughout episodes regardless of his on-screen presence.

The highly emotional score switches from dark to dainty themes episode to episode in The Sandman: Season 1, while still remaining cohesive and homogenous. Buckley created sounds unique to every moment of the series, making the music feel alive and distinctive.

ABOUT ‘THE SANDMAN’

There’s another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. When Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way.

Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series written by Neil Gaiman, The Sandman is a rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy woven together over the course of ten epic chapters following Dream’s many adventures. Developed and executive produced by Gaiman, showrunner Allan Heinberg, and David S. Goyer, The Sandman also stars Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Vanesu Samunyai (formerly known as “Kyo Ra”), John Cameron Mitchell, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Joely Richardson, Niamh Walsh, Sandra James-Young and Razane Jammal.

ABOUT DAVID BUCKLEY

Emmy-nominated composer David Buckley is currently scoring Kandahar starring Gerard Butler. Recent film scores include Universal’s Nobody starring Bob Odenkirk, Greenland also starring Butler, the remake of Papillon starring Charlie Hunnam & Rami Malek, Jason Bourne directed by Paul Greengrass, and The Nice Guys for Shane Black and Joel Silver. Previous scores include the Joel Schumacher-directed thriller Blood Creek, Ben Affleck’s crime drama The Town, Taylor Hackford’s action feature Parker and Rob Minkoff’s fantasy adventure The Forbidden Kingdom.

For television, David composed the music for the hit Scott Free/CBS drama series The Good Wife and continues to score the spin-off, now in its sixth season, The Good Fight (for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Title Music). He also composed the scores for Mercy Street (PBS), BrainDead (CBS), The Gifted (Marvel/FOX), The Stranger (Netflix), Stay Close (Netflix), and The Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix). He is currently scoring the third season of Evil (CBS).

Born in England, David’s first involvement with film music was as a cathedral choirboy performing on Peter Gabriel’s score for Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. He continued his musical education at Cambridge University. In 2006, David moved to Los Angeles where he began collaborating with Harry Gregson-Williams on film scores, including Shrek The Third and Gone Baby Gone. He has written music for films including Wonder Woman, all the Fifty Shades movies, Big Eyes and American Hustle, and his music was featured in David O’Russell’s Joy. David was honored as a ‘Brit to Watch’ by BAFTA.

As well as film and TV, David has written the music for a number of games, including Batman Arkham Knight (Warner Bros/Rocksteady).

ABOUT WATERTOWER MUSIC

WaterTower Music, the in-house label for the Warner Bros. Discovery companies, releases recorded music as rich and diverse as the companies themselves. It has been the soundtrack home to many of the world’s most iconic films, television shows, and games since 2001.

The Sandman: Season 1 soundtrack is available to purchase on CD and is streaming on Spotify and Apple Music.

Summary

Madison Flynn is being stalked. Not out of misplaced love, or obsession, but by supernatural beings who want her dead. Her apartment has been burned down, and her best friend has been murdered. What makes matters worse is that all of this was just the beginning, as we discover in Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #4.

Positives

Wow, I don’t even know where to begin, as this issue could actually be the strongest of the series, so far. James Tynion is writing an amazing tale and artists Lisandro Estherren and Patricio Delpeche are bringing his nightmares to life. The surreal quality of the art adds so much to the feel of this book and I don’t believe any ultra-realistic or even fully painted work would do the story as much justice. The dream-like, cartoony style of Estherren, coupled with the hues of Delpeche, give readers a world that seems to be just on the wrong side of a cracked, cursed mirror.

Simon Bowland is also absolutely killing it… not in the same way as Agony and Ecstacy, but you know what I mean. Subtle touches like the murderers’ white-on-black dialogue and the switch of fonts during the “Chaste” interlude all add even deeper layers to the final look of the book.

As for that interlude… wow! Anyone who knows me, or who regularly reads my reviews, knows that I’m a child of the Alan Moore era Swamp Thing, Neil Gaiman’s original Sandman epic, and all the Vertigo/DC Black Label books that followed them.

Seeing Moore’s Boogey Man referenced (Swamp Thing Vol. 2, #44) alongside the Corinthian’s debut story (Sandman issues #9-#16) made my heart leap with joy. Those classics, for me, were when comics grew up, so seeing them honored and expanded on is a delight.

Dani and Tamra Bonvillain also pulled the rug right out from under me. From the beginning, the backup strips in this series have been part of the ongoing narrative, rather than an extra story tacked on at the end of the book. This month, I didn’t even feel or notice the transition. Philip Sitz’s story revolted and fascinated me, just as it did back in the 90s, and flowed with the main tale so perfectly that I was blown away.

Negatives

Apart from maybe having had Simon Bowland do the lettering on the side of the helicopter, I’ve got nothing. Even that’s just nit-picking.

Verdict

Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country #4 is about as good a comic as anyone could ask for. Shocks, horror, betrayal, violence, and dark fantasy at its very finest. This series will happily sit on the same shelf as my Sandman originals because it’s more than worthy.

During The Sandman panel at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, a new trailer was revealed, and with it came so much to see. This new footage features mortals, nightmares, Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer, and even Death herself.

Check out the trailer below:

There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever.

Goyer.

You can also watch The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman break down the trailer right here:

Frame-by-frame, The Sandman comic writer Neil Gaiman watches and takes us through the official trailer for the first season of Netflix’s The Sandman.

According to Netflix, the series starts exactly where the original 1989 comic series did. After decades of imprisonment in the waking world, the King of Dreams (Tom Sturridge) must reclaim his fallen kingdom and his stolen power, and capture his most wayward subjects. If he doesn’t, humanity as we know it could be destroyed. On his journey, he runs into DC Comics characters like John Constantine’s ancestor Johanna (played by Jenna Coleman), historical figures like William Shakespeare, and even the devil (Gwendoline Christie).

The Sandman’s first 10-episode season drops on Netflix on Aug. 5.
