A brand new Lois Lane story will arrive this summer within the pages of Action Comics thanks to New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell as she makes her DC debut for this year’s Superman Superstars initiative!

You can check out all the details below!

Bestselling Author Rainbow Rowell Makes Her DC Debut

Rainbow Rowell and Cian Tormey make news with Lois Lane this summer!

New York Times bestselling author Rainbow Rowell makes her DC debut this July in Action Comics, delivering a story with artist Cian Tormey! Together they’ll take on the most powerful woman in Superman’s life…Lois Lane! Rowell and Tormey’s story will run in the pages of Action Comics #1067-1069, paired with a lead story by Gail Simone and Eddy Barrows.

“As a former newspaper reporter, I’ve always had a soft spot for Daily Planet stories,” shared Rowell. “I love that Clark Kent is Superman and also a working journalist—and that it isn’t just dusty backstory. It’s a real facet of his character. I love that Clark met Lois in the newsroom, and that they still work there together. (This is so realistic, I swear.) I really like it when comic book romances last…There’s a lot of story to tell after two people say yes to each other. So—even though I was a little nervous about diving into the DC Universe—I couldn’t resist the chance to write a love story that is also a newsroom story, and still a superhero story.”

“The story that Rainbow and I are telling is about Lois finding her strength, with Clark supporting her as she becomes stronger in her convictions,” added Tormey. “He sees her finding her courage in a new role, her sense of responsibility for everyone—a gentle reminder for Clark of how far he has come, and how far all of us who are not blessed with superpowers can go when faced with adversity.”

“I’ve just seen the first of Cian Tormey’s pages, and I think people are going to adore his take on Lois and Clark,” continued Rowell. “Cian’s work has a timeless quality that’s perfect for this relationship.”

Rainbow Rowell fell in love with superhero comics in junior high. She’s written two Eisner-nominated series, Runaways and She-Hulk, and the bestselling graphic novel Pumpkinheads, and is working on the manga adaptation of her novel Fangirl. She is best known for her prose novels, including #1 bestsellers Eleanor & Park and the Simon Snow Trilogy. This is Rainbow’s first work for DC.

Cian Tormey is an Irish illustrator and a graduate of the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. He currently lives in Valencia, Spain, and has been the artist for DC’s Injustice: Year Zero, Alan Scott: The Green Lantern, Nightwing, Batgirl, the GLAAD Media Award-nominated Superman: Son of Kal-El, Marvel’s Darkhold, and more.

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×07: Clark tries to plan a normal date without any Superman problems but gets interrupted when Mr. Mxyzptlk sweeps him, Jimmy, and Lois into a high-stakes, multiverse-hopping chase.

Positives

Lois and Clark finally have a date night to themselves. With this being their first date, Clark is doing everything he can to plan it to perfection. However, things go sideways quickly when Mr. Mxyzptlk, a powerful being from an alternate dimension, shows up. Claiming to need Superman’s help, the two are soon on an adventure across the multiverse. But there is more to Mxyzptlk’s story than it seems.

Lois and Jimmy have a weird encounter of their own when they meet alternate versions of themselves from the multiverse. Known as the Council of Lois, these members are versions of Lois and Jimmy throughout the multiverse tasked with protecting it from Mxyzptlk and stopping him, no matter the cost. Lois seems a bit cautious and untrusting meeting her alternate selves–and it seems that she has a good reason.

All of this comes with plenty of comedy included with the action, as I’ve come to expect with My Adventures With Superman. Even Mr. Mxyzptlk, who I was familiar with from the previous animated series, was amazing here. I especially liked the easter egg callback to the hat from the animated series. This show is different, yet it pays respects to its roots with how it portrays all of its characters so far.

Negatives

I have no negatives about this episode. It’s just pure goodness.

Verdict

Overall, I thought My Adventures With Superman 1×07 was a great episode that had plenty of easter eggs to keep an eye out for. One thing that stands out to me is the file that Lois finds on Superman. When she opens it, a lot is revealed that may change her relationship with Clark. But only time will tell.

Summary

More of Power Girl’s private life is revealed…and Amalak gets a surprise that ties into the Kryptonian virus.

Positives

Like last issue, the cover by Gary Frank is the best thing about Power Girl #2.  Frank captures more about the character than Leah Williams does in the entire issue.  Eduardo Pansica and Julio Ferreira do a good job on the art, and there are a couple panels that channel the right kind of Power Girl energy and attitude.  However, the depiction of Power Girl in her “Paige” identity leans into Manga territory at times and is definitely out of step tonally with a recognizable portrayal of Power Girl’s character.  There are also a couple sequences with some effective storytelling, most notably the opening sequence with Amalak as he discovers something unexpected about the Kryptonian virus.

If one knew nothing of Power Girl, Power Girl #2 provides some details on her character…that is THIS version of the character.  That said, if you are already familiar with the character, and perhaps know a lot about the character before she appeared in Lazarus Planet and Williams’ Action Comics back ups, this issue is just weird….

Negatives

For reasons unrelated to this Power Girl series, I’ve been rereading all of the appearances of the Helena Wayne Huntress.  As one might expect, Power Girl is in a lot of them.  Details from her history that may have slipped through the cracks are coming back into focus.  Williams is cherry picking events from Power Girl’s published appearances, but including nothing of the substance of them and with this issue she introduces another “greatest fear” for her that she creates from Power Girl’s origin.  Apparently, because Power Girl’s was raised in the symbioship that brought her to Earth she feels like she is afraid she is living in a simulation and not a “real girl.”  This is a potentially interesting idea, I suppose, but like so many aspects of this iteration of Power Girl it feel very foreign and disconnected to- up to this point- a very grounded character.

It’s clear that this is a new iteration of the character that does not have any previous appearances.  Williams is writing her like she is brand new to Earth, despite having already demonstrated that she has worked with her cousin, Superman from her universe, and had a now “useless” identity of Karen Starr (presumably on the main DC Earth).  The lack of greater context for these experiences creates more confusion because they don’t make sense with other aspects of Williams script.  It’s particularly apparent when when Williams has PG claim she doesn’t understand particular social cues making it seem like she just arrived on Earth.  A moment that seems like it is purposely ridiculous is when PG claims she is “so good at hugging now,” and Omen responds with “Look at my awkward little alien learning how to human.”  This is so bad it’s almost funny, and it’s not supposed to be.  I truly feel sorry for Pansica, Ferreira, Fajardo and Carey that they have to contribute to this scene.

Negatives Cont’d

It’s hard to reinvent a character without an obvious reboot or tell a story detailing how the character has arrived at a new stage in life.  There’s no story that brings the reader from her past (that somehow exists, because it IS referenced) to this new present.  It’s just a past that Williams isn’t telling us.  She seems to be writing it as if we know, but we don’t…she’s just making this stuff up.

The biggest problem this Power Girl series has is that she just doesn’t seem familiar.  Her attitude, personality and mindset is just completely opposite of what readers have come to know about Power Girl.  In Power Girl #2, Williams has Power Girl acting more and more like Supergirl.  She even has to suffer Lois Lane giving her pointers on how to be Power Girl and how to act around other people.   It’s heartbreaking to see a character misrepresented so terribly.  An alternate Earth Supergirl that is a brand new character would be tolerable, but not Power Girl who has an established personality, attitude and extensive history living on Earth among humans and a substantial career as a hero.

We learn in this issue that “Paige” is working at the Daily Planet.  It was certainly suggested last issue that she was going to have a different job with Steelworks.  So much for PG being her own woman.  She’s just like Clark, now!

Power Girl All-Star Comics

Negatives Cont’d

PG isn’t the only one being written as a different character.  Oddly, the depiction of Streaky seems to be more like Power Girl’s cat, Stinky.  Streaky has always gotten into trouble, but didn’t really have an attitude.  Stinky on the other hand, had an attitude that seemed to mesh with Power Girl’s.  Streaky comes across much more like Stinky than Streaky in this issue.

Omen seems to be here for comedic purposes.  Unfortunately, it’s not landing.  She’s just sort of annoying.  Additionally, Omen continually referring to herself as PG’s bestie is just laughable.  It just doesn’t make sense to not acknowledge any Power Girl’s past friendship with Helena Wayne, it would be like claiming that Speedy was Batman’s sidekick instead of Robin.  From a technical aspect, these moment with Omen don’t really add to the “friendship” because they are either awkward, superficial or both.

Verdict

With the depiction of Power Girl as insecure, dependent upon Superman and Super-family, inexperienced living on Earth, it’s probably OK to refer to her as Paige, as she’s absolutely nothing like the Karen Starr Power Girl we know and love or the one we’ve seen before.  You might be able to enjoy some of the art in this issue, but it’s a real struggle to connect with this iteration of the character.  Furthermore, it actually makes it difficult to engage with the Amalak/ Kryptonian virus storyline because the characterization is so bizarre.  Power Girl #2 seems to take on elements of DC’s line of YA Graphic Novels which distances it even further from the character’s origins, yet explains so much about inconsistencies with this iteration.

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×06: When Jimmy gets kidnapped, it’s up to Lois and Clark to save him – but rescuing Jimmy will lead them into danger as they deal with mad scientists, military secrets, and relationship woes.

Positives

This episode picks up where the previous one leaves off — with Lois angry at Clark for not revealing his secret identity as Superman. However, while searching for Jimmy in the forest, where he’s seemingly disappeared, Clark ends up revealing the truth to Lois. Clark’s feelings are put to the test as he finds himself attacked by unknown weaponry, and, for some unknown reason, he’s depowered.

Jimmy’s situation seems even worse when his kidnappers reveal themselves. Monsieur Mallah and the Brain make their appearance, and I really enjoyed it. Expecting to die, Jimmy reveals how he feels betrayed by Lois and Clark, and he ends up befriending Mallah and Brain!

Negatives

I don’t have any complaints about this episode. The action was great and the story itself was pretty darn good. Usually, a powerful character like Superman is depowered for no reason in an episode or two to humanize him in a way. Here, it’s different seeing that this particular Superman is still learning his powers and doesn’t know how invulnerable he is yet. It makes his fights, particularly in this episode, that much more interesting as a character.

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×06 was a good episode that was also pretty funny. If anything, it shows the bond between Lois, Clark, and Jimmy, and the lengths these friends will go to help each other. Often times, in the comics and shows I’ve seen, Jimmy is seen as a side character or an afterthought that you don’t see until the last few pages. I’m glad that, in this show, Jimmy is finally getting some time to shine, which the character rightly deserves.

Score: 5/5

Josie Campbell, producer of the new animated series My Adventures With Superman, recently revealed that the series was asked by WB to use lesser-known villains, instead of bigger baddies like Lex Luthor.

During an interview with The Comics Cube (via The Direct), Campbell said that classic villains like Brainiac, General Zod, and Lex Luthor were restricted from use in the first season.

“Some of it was… Warner Bros… and I think it was a good note,” she said. “Like our big execs on Warner Brothers were like, ‘Well, these are the big hitters that everybody’s seen and everybody’s expecting. And we’ve seen this a million times, so we want your twists on things.'”

Campbell continued, “And I think it was Sam Register and Audrey Diehl, who were doing notes with us, were like, ‘These characters take up the whole screen. They kind of suck the air out because they’re so famous, and there’s so many expectations, so hold off on them. Hold off on these characters, and build the story how you see fit.'”

They did manage to at least get a tease of Brainiac and Zod in the season one finale, which should mean more of these characters in the next season, which is exciting.

My Adventures With Superman is currently available to watch on Max and stars Jack Quaid as Clark Kent/Superman, Alice Lee as Lois Lane, and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen.

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×05: Lois uncovers a secret in Metropolis and is determined to get to the truth; Superman tracks down dangerous weapons in the city and finds himself in the crosshairs of mysterious organization Task Force X.

Positives

This was a pretty hilarious episode and is a reminder of the lengths Lois will go to accomplish her goals. Now convinced that Clark Kent is Superman, Lois is determined to make him admit this secret at all costs, including handcuffing herself to Superman! This tactic, of course, backfires and places Lois in danger with Superman having to rescue her. Also, an unknown threat is kidnapping criminals around Metropolis, forcing Superman to act. This culminates in the Man of Steel having to face off against one of the members of Task Force X.

While Lois and Clark were having their issues, Jimmy Olsen seems to be having problems of his own. Finding out that his site, which is dedicated to Superman and stories of the unknown, was getting roasted online by someone, Jimmy sets out to find the culprit. However, it’s closer than he thinks when he discovers it’s fellow reporter Steve. This turns out to be way more hilarious than I could have imagined as these two end up on assignment together with Jimmy messaging Lois and Clark trying to get away.

Negatives

If I have to make a complaint about something in this episode, it has to be how quickly Lois finds out about Superman’s secret identity. In other versions of the Lois and Clark story, it has happened of course, but usually the reveal takes more time to come to fruition. This is the first show I’ve seen go directly for the identity reveal in the first season — especially so early in it. However, I’ve liked everything I’ve seen so far and that’s made me trust the writers and the direction they’re taking.

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×05 was a great episode that shows how powerful, and yet how selfless, Superman really is. His encounter with Task Force X shows this when he has to save a bus full of kids while being attacked at the same time. His struggles with Task Force X and this mysterious General seem to be the ongoing story for this season and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Score: 4.5/5

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×04: Clark, Lois, and Jimmy cover a glitzy gala hosted by tech-billionaire Dr. Ivo, but while Clark and Lois wonder if this counts as a date, Ivo unleashes his newest invention: a creation that can bring down Superman.

Positives

This episode shows how fast Lois, Clark, and Jimmy are establishing themselves in Metropolis as reporters. Although still just interns, Perry assigns them the gala event hosted by Dr. Ivo, a billionaire tech genius who is apparently going broke. Needing to pay back investors and save his company, Ivo premieres the Parasite suit during the event. When the suit and Dr. Ivo go crazy, Superman arrives to save the day.

This episode also shows that Lois and Jimmy are more than just side characters, and the duo get their hands dirty once again, helping Superman by sabotaging Dr. Ivo’s tech so Superman could stop him once and for all. I hope this is something that’s repeated in future episodes, especially with Jimmy, who I feel will get his proper chance to shine as a character in this series.

Negatives

I must admit, my only complaint at first was the look of this new version of Parasite — I wasn’t a fan of the idea of the Parasite being a suit. However, once I saw it in action, I changed my mind. Instead of copying Superman’s powers like the animated series of the 90’s, this version gets larger, more armored, and more powerful.

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×04 is a good episode that leaves plenty to wonder about for the next one. Lois and Clark have a conversation about their relationship, while Lois also discovers something about Superman that could change her investigation entirely. Ivo ends up badly damaged in the battle and taken into custody, but I doubt it’ll be the last time we’ll see him.

Score: 4/5

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×03: Lois wants to interview Superman and Clark must figure out how to help her while protecting his secret identity. Meanwhile, criminal ring INTERGANG gets their hands on unstable weapons, and a mysterious organization plots in the shadows.

Positives

Lois Lane’s determination to get an interview with Superman is one of the best parts of this episode and creates some amazingly humorous moments, especially considering the fact that she’s working right next to him as Clark Kent! It’s funny seeing Clark attempting to help Lois snag this interview, all the while trying to keep his secret hidden.

Intergang makes an appearance, but rather than being a mafia-type organization, they seem to be a bunch of teenagers who happen to have some very powerful weaponry. We don’t know yet how or when these teens got these weapons, but they’re enough to give Superman some problems.

Negatives

I have no complaints about this episode.

Verdict

Overall, I thought My Adventures With Superman 1×03 was a great episode, with plenty of action and some funny scenes throughout. This version of Lois and Jimmy are slowly becoming some of my favorite iterations of their characters. It seems that they might be going the route of Superman’s secret being revealed earlier in this season than in previous shows before. If they do go that route, I’m eager to see how the story goes with Lois, Jimmy, and Clark, and what it means for their friendship. At the end of the episode, Intergang seems to meet with someone who has plans for Superman. Hopefully, this will be revealed in the next episode.

Summary

Superman & Lois 3×13: All of Smallville comes together to view a meteor shower; Lex Luthor makes his move with a weapon that can rival Superman in raw power – and perhaps even kill him.

Positives

Thanks to the machinations of Bruno Mannheim, Lex Luthor finally has a weapon that may be capable of actually killing Superman. Finding the formally imprisoned Bizarro underground, Lex captures him and decides to experiment on and torture him. Being killed again and again, Bizarro resurrects more powerful than before. With each resurrection, Bizarro’s body becomes more and more twisted and disfigured, until Lex finally unleashes the creature upon the Man of Steel.

Negatives

I have no complaints about this episode. The action scenes were top notch, and the emotional impact was done really well. A particular scene between Lois and Superman during the battle with Doomsday stays in my mind, as Superman gives Lois a look, as if he knows he’s not going to return from battle this time.

If I had to complain about something, I hate that the next season is going to cut so much of the cast from the show. This episode saw some exciting new horizons for characters such as Chrissy and Kyle, and even Lana and John seemed to have found a potential relationship with each other. However, with the cuts being announced before the start of next season, I’m not sure what happens to these existing characters and their relationships with each other.

Verdict

Superman & Lois 3×13 was a great episode and an amazing conclusion to season three. It appears that the possible final season of the show will air in 2024 and I hope that the writers give it a proper send off for the fans it’s amassed over the years. There are so many vital parts to this show, between the villains, the action, and the entire family aspect of Clark’s life, and I hope they keep that same energy going into the final season.

Score: 5/5

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×02: Clark Kent goes back to the Kent farm to find answers about his true heritage. Meanwhile, Lois and Jimmy track down some tech thieves.

Positives

This episode shows how My Adventures With Superman isn’t afraid to be different. Aside from the obvious anime-inspired art style, the backstory of these characters is surprisingly different from what we have known, including Superman. In this case, I found it interesting that Clark isn’t able to understand the Kryptonian language, unlike in other shows. And it also seems there may be a nefarious purpose behind his arrival– will they explore that later, perhaps?

Negatives

I have to admit, I wasn’t a fan of this particular introduction of Livewire. It seems that a few of Superman’s enemies who traditionally have powers will instead have their powers via technology like Livewire does in this episode. However, with it being only the first season, I’m sure we’ll see some character development, even with Superman’s enemies, so maybe she’ll have some actual powers in future episodes.

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×02 was an overall really good episode that will definitely lead to future consequences. Lois seems more determined than ever to get an interview with Superman, while Clark is only interested in getting closer to Lois. Also, it seems that a government organization has been introduced as well–and they make themselves known to Livewire. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
