Ever since the series of finale of Arrow, John has been bouncing around the remaining Arrowverse shows to determine the nature of the alien box that fell out of the sky. Although it seems Diggle has left this mystery behind, David says differently.

It’s not [resolved. When Eric Wallace] called me, showrunner of The Flash, and he had a pitch for me to end the saga, the Green Lantern Saga, within the Arrowverse. The reason why he did is because the Arrowverse was ending, right? It’s gonna end with Flash and all the other shows would go.

 

We knew, not at the time, I knew but you didn’t know yet, that Todd [Helbing] was going to reveal in Superman & Lois that the Superman & Lois-verse, if you will, exists on another planet, on a different Earth, and these characters are still alive.

 

The idea is perhaps there’s a world where we can explore the Flash, or maybe just Barry Allen. Maybe he is Flash, maybe he isn’t. Is Oliver Queen alive? Maybe he is. Maybe the ring is still there.

David As Green Lantern – Journey Thus Far And Could It Happen?

From Supergirl, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and to Batwoman, Diggle has been on a two-year journey to every scientific mind he has worked with. Comic book fans have been clamoring for this to be John – whose stepfather has the surname “Stewart” – going on to becoming the CW’s Green Lantern. Besides that tease, The Flash of Earth-90 (John Wesley Shipp) had seen Diggle in “Elseworlds” and wondered why he wasn’t wearing his ring.

What has also driven this quest is the continuous mental attacks from an unknown voice repetitiously telling him “Worlds await.” However, it was not until he circled back to The Flash, turning to the incarcerated Reverse-Flash (Tom Cavanaugh), that he finally got answers. In “The Man In The Yellow Tie,” Eobard Thawne, with future knowledge, revealed this extraterrestrial box may only open if John wills it to. When this mindset finally opened the box, Diggle was bombarded with galactic imagery of what he could become, but ultimately rejected whatever this “offer” was. With the box seemingly transported back to its point of origin, Diggle resolved to get back to his family, since none of those realities he’d witnessed revealed he would.

Again, it’s not over. Rather, it’s just beginning.

Now that it has been established that Superman & Lois is not part of the slowly dying Arrowverse, Ramsey suggests this revelation is a whole new beginning:

Superman & Lois allows us to reboot the Arrowverse in a way that we didn’t really think [before. When Todd initially revealed that, there were a lot of moans and groans about “Oh, we’re no longer in the Arrowverse.” I think it was smart. It was [Greg] Berlanti’s brainchild and I think it was smart because it allows us to grow outside of the Arrowverse, which we weren’t allowed to do.

 

So, to answer your question is that the ring is still around. It exists in Superman & Lois, it’s been denied in the same way it was in the Arrowverse, but [John Diggle] didn’t go through the same thing.

Ramsey has directed two episodes of the series thus far, first appearing last year as Diggle and acknowledging Superman had worked with Oliver. By doing so he acknowledges that there is a Green Arrow in that dimension. If Oliver, indeed, is not dead, then it opens the door for Stephen Amell to perhaps play the role that made him famous.

Diggle returned in the second season finale to approach John Henry Irons (Wole Parks) with a request to help him go after Intergang. Could this also lead this version of John Diggle on the path to becoming Green Lantern? Will the box fall out of the sky on this world and present the same offer to Diggle? Will John make a different choice? Time will tell.

The third season of Superman & Lois has recently begun filming in Vancouver, and is set to premiere in January 2023 on The CW.

Justice U will focus around a young group of selected meta humans going undercover at university. Diggle is responsible for their recruitment and training. Spartan will be hoping to help build the heroes of tomorrow. The new series will be set in the “Arrowverse” and will see a host of brand new characters. As well as appearing in the show, the pilot will be directed by David Ramsey himself. This isn’t his first venture into directing as he has previously directed episodes of Arrow and has struck a deal to direct more across the connected shows.

The Growth of the Arrowverse

This is a good indication of the CWs commitment to this fictional universe. The fact that they’re still looking to grow and build, following the end of shows like Arrow and Supergirl, is a positive sign. With little information on JLU so far, we don’t know anything, except the projected date of 2022/23. However, what we do know for definite is that this show will also have Greg Berlanti as executive producer. Berlanti has worked on all the other “Arrowverse” shows in the same role, including Batwoman, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow and Supergirl.  

Justice U will not be the only CW project Berlanti will be overseeing for the 2022-23 period. He is also working on the other DC related Show “Gotham Knights“.

Unveiled last week in preparation for the upcoming eighth – and final? – season of The Flash is this beautiful poster focusing on the crossover event. Entitled “Armageddon,” the Fastest Man Alive will be teaming up with both current and former Arrowverse characters against Despero.

Besides leads Barry Allen/The Flash (Grant Gustin) and Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton), this poster are confirmed players: Ryan Wilder/Batwoman (Javicia Leslie), Mia Smoak/Green Arrow (Kat McNamara), Jefferson Pierce/Black Lightning (Cress Williams), Ray Palmer/The Atom (Brandon Routh), and Alex Danvers/Sentinel (Chyler Leigh).  Despero, not featured on this poster, is portrayed by Scottish actor Tony Curran. Osric Chau returns from his debut in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” as Ryan Choi, and fan-favorite villain Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash will be embodied once more by Tom Cavanaugh. Neal McDonough is also confirmed to reprise his role as the villainous Damian Dahrk.

This is the first time since 2019’s “Crisis” crossover that Mia, Jefferson, Ray, and Barry have joined forces. Further, it’s also the first time fans will have seen Black Lightning or Mia since their respective series ended. Kat was set to star in an Arrow spinoff entitled Green Arrow And The Canaries  alongside fellow alums Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy, but the project unfortunately fell through when their backdoor pilot failed to garner interest from the studio. Routh left his series DC’s Legends of Tomorrow shortly after “Crisis.” During that crossover, he portrayed both Palmer and his version of The Man of Steel from 2006’s Superman Returns. Cavanaugh, after being a regular on The Flash since its inception seven years ago, left the show last season along with Carlos Valdes, who portrayed S.T.A.R. Labs engineer Cisco Ramon/Vibe. For Javicia, it will be her first crossover since taking over as lead of Batwoman from former star Ruby Rose, who had debuted in the crossover prior to “Crisis” entitled “Elseworlds.” And finally, Leigh will take her final bow as Alex on her show, Supergirl , in the two-hour series finale tomorrow night.

The dancer-turned-actress who had debuted as Lucy in the first season of Supergirl brings the character to Superman & Lois. Currently, Dewan is listed as a recurring regular on ABC’s The Rookie and will also serve as a judge on CBS’s Come Dance With Me reality series.

Jenna Dewan Brings Back Lucy – But What Do We Know About Lois’s Kid Sister?

In post-Crisis comics – the 1980s onward – Lucy went on a journey from flight attendant to following in her father’s footsteps in the military. However, she was sharply against Superman’s presence on Earth and, like General Sam Lane, exhibited xenophobic agendas against Kryptonians in general. This understandably put a strain on her relationship with her sister. Following the “War of The Supermen” storyline, she eventually became empowered by a mystical Kryptonian uniform that she began to operate with as Superwoman. This unfortunately led to her collapsing into insanity and incarceration while attempts were made to remove her metahuman abilities. This storyline was expunged via Flashpoint.

Dewan is the fourth actress to portray Lucy in a live-action project. Elizabeth Barondes and Roxanne Xal both portrayed the character in ABC’s Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. That version of Lucy’s claim to fame was dating John Corbin before he was transformed into the villain Metallo. She was later portrayed on Smallville by Peyton List, and that Lucy was estranged from her sister and on the run from the law. She returned in the tenth season alongside father Sam (Michael Irons) unannounced and tried to seduce Clark as part of Sam’s way of testing Lois’s boyfriend’s commitment to her. List would return to the DC Universe years later in the first season of The Flash as Golden Glider.

In season one of Supergirl, Lucy had come to National City as James Olsen’s ex-fiancee and a major in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps to prosecute J’Onn J’Onnz for impersonating the late Hank Henshaw. It is during this interrogation period that Kara was forced to reveal her identity to Lucy in a vain attempt to gain leniency for him. For a time she had replaced J’Onn as head of the D.E.O., and it was also during her stint that Kara first met Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) when he first breached to Earth-38. She has not been heard from since, nor even mentioned on Superman & Lois. Given the massive post-Crisis changes to the Arrowverse, it remains to be seen whether Lucy will be the same.

There is no official start date for the second season of Superman & Lois, nor when Dewan will appear as Lucy, at this time.

A familiar name, face and voice to DC fans has been added to the cast of  Batman Unburied. The new podcast sees Sam Witwer join. Witwer has played multiple roles with DC ; including Davis Bloome in Smallville, Ben Lockwood/Agent Liberty in Supergirl ; and the voice of Orm in the animated film Justice League: Throne of Atlantis. Continuing with his DC involvement his next role will see him playing the role of a cannibalistic serial killer known as The Harvester. With Witwer maintaining his  relationship with the DC universe it will be interesting to hear his take on yet another character.

Batman Unburied is a new direction for DC. A podcast that takes a very unique and dark approach to the Dark Knight. Unburied will be available through Spotify and is the first production of it’s kind for DC. The Existing cast list for Unburied includes; Winston Duke as Bruce Wayne, Lance Reddick and Toks Olagundoye as Thomas and Martha Wayne, John Rhys-Davies as Dr. Hunter, Ashly Burch as Vicki Vale, Bruce’s TV journalist ex-girlfriend, Hasan Minhaj as The Riddler, and Jason Isaacs as Alfred Pennyworth.

The project which is being produced in partnership with Spotify and Dark Knight trilogy co-writer David S. Goyer telling an original Batman story. With a fresh take on the Dark Knight in a unique format is an exciting move by DC and it’ll be interesting to see the level of interest this new direction for DC generates and furthermore what it will mean for potential other projects.

The costars and good friends are collaborating to bring their iconic portrayals of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, respectively, back to the small screen via animated format. However, in a recent interview, Rosenbaum confirms it’s in the preliminary stage although he is sworn to secrecy on the details.

Tom Welling and Michael – What To Expect and Why Couldn’t Smallville Last?

“[We’re] not allowed really to talk about it now,” Rosenbaum says, “because it’s in the early stages. So we’re developing it. We’re trying to see what happens with it, but that’s about all I can say right now. ”

Tom Welling, who was with Michael at the interview, concurred and added that they are in collaboration with Smallville cocreators Al Gough and Miles Millar. As to why the sudden desire to revisit his version of Superman, Tom admits the fans have a role.

“[One] of the things I hear from the fans is like ”Why did you guys stop?’ Well, I can give you a million reasons why we stopped, but I understand why a fan would want it to go on. I feel the same way about other projects I’m a fan of, like ‘Keep going! Keep going!’ And just there are limitations at [some point. We] ran out of story for Clark. Clark had to become Superman, and Smallville could not be a Superman series. It just wasn’t built that way. So what we’re trying to do is sort of jumping into this other arena where we can maybe service that idea and have fun doing so.”

The original series debuted on October 16, 2001, thus making this past weekend its twentieth anniversary. To commemorate that anniversary, Warners Media has released the complete series for the first time on Blu-ray in a boxed set.

Developed by Gough and Millar, the series followed Clark Kent’s journey from superpowered high school junior to a man embracing his destiny. The show established a strong following with its grounded approach via its mantra “no tights, no flights,” choosing to focus on Clark Kent, not The Man of Steel he would become. The manifestation of his powers became something likened to that of puberty, thus limiting his powers at first to invulnerability, strength and speed. The older he got, a new power would emerge. That angle made the younger viewers able to relate to Clark’s story.

Then-newcomer Tom Welling chose the method actor’s approach and only focused on the development of his character without any prior knowledge to the also created an engaging journey for Lex and how his brotherly friendship with Clark would completely deteriorate into an intense rivalry as destiny pried them apart by their destinies and the choices they made in response to them. Rosenbaum’s performance as Lex injected the character with pathos and engendered empathy from the audience. He departed in the seventh season, but returned for the series finale as Lex’s clone, the original having died but set up Cadmus as a contingency should that happen. The finale also saw his entire memory erased via a neural virus, including both his friendship/rivalry with Clark, as well as Clark’s secret.

DC later produced a comic entitled Smallville: Season Eleven, which picked up where the finale left off, showing Clark establish himself as Superman. As to whether Welling and Rosenbaum will use that comic for reference for this upcoming project remains to be seen.

There is also the question of who will be returning to lend their voices to their characters. Since Smallville ended, numerous alums like Welling, Erica Durance, and Laura Vandervoort have found new life in the Arrowverse on shows such as Lucifer and Supergirl. Justin Hartley, the first live-action Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, is currently starring on the CBS hit This is Us. The only cast member, however, who will not be involved is Allison Mack, who portrayed Chloe Sullivan, currently serving a prison sentence for her role in the cult NXVM.

Smallville Stars Provide Update on Animated Series | CBR

We also got a look at some art from the upcoming Superman animated series, My Adventures with Superman (which looks super-fun!). Set to be released on HBO Max and on Cartoon Network, new concept art from the series and its new designs for Superman, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen were shown off during the event along with a new shot of the trio together. The series will follow the action-packed, comedic, and romantic adventures of Superman and Lois Lane along with their best friend Jimmy Olsen.

Previously described as a “serialized coming-of-age story”, will see Clark build his secret Superman identity and embrace his role as Metropolis’s hero while Lois, who is herself growing into the role of star investigative journalist, takes aspiring photographer Jimmy Olsen under her wing. Against this backdrop, viewers will see Lois and Clark falling in love, sharing adventures, and taking down bad guys all while stumbling over secrets and discovering what it means to be Superman and Lois Lane.

The Boys star Jack Quaid is set to lead the series as the voice of Clark Kent/Superman and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s Alice Lee will take on the role of Lois Lane, no voice talent for Jimmy Olsen has been confirmed just yet.

No premiere date for My Adventures With Superman has been announced yet.

Unexpectedly, we were also treated to a surprise look back at Smallville, which celebrates its 20^th anniversary this year with the release of the complete series on Blu-ray for the very first time on October 19. The celebration featured a reunion between actors Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum and special greetings from past cast members including Kristin Kreuk, John Glover, James Marsters, Justin Hartley and more!

Finally, fans heard from DC Chief Creative Officer and Publisher Jim Lee when he introduced a modern new slogan for the Man of Steel. Superman has long been a symbol of hope who inspires people, and it is that optimism and hope that will power him forward with a new mission statement: Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow.

Co-created by Brian Michael Bendis (Superman) and Jamal Campbell (Detective Comics, Green Arrow) for the Wonder Comics imprint at DC, Naomi McDuffie is a teenage superhero from a parallel Earth with energy-based abilities. On that world, exposure to an unknown radiation created thirty godlike beings, yet all were sterile. Naomi’s mother is the only one of those beings to succesfully give birth. To protect her from the conquering Zumbado, she sent her daughter to the Prime universe. She was then adopted by the McDuffies in Port Oswego with no knowledge of who she really is. Naomi searches for clues to her past as the learns the nature of her powers.

To date, Walfall is the only casting announcement for this project. Kaci’s previous acting credits include Power, Person of Interest, and Army Wives. DuVernay has an extensive resume that includes movies like Selma and TV series like Queen Sugar, Cherish The Day, and When They See Us. There is also no word as to when the pilot will be filmed. And, of course, there is the pandemic to consider. Superman and Lois went on hiatus after the fifth episode because someone on set had tested positive for COVID-19. However, given that we are now in May, this image is a sign a greenlight for Naomi is in sight. It is unknown at this point if Naomi will sync up with the existing Arrowverse shows, but it is possible. Supergirl and Black Lighting were once separate projects.
