A few weeks back, it was revealed that Supergirl‘s Nicole Maines would be heading over to The Flash to bring Dreamer to the final season. Now, it’s being confirmed that even more characters will be making a return as John Diggle, Wally West, and Ramsey Rosso (aka Bloodwork) will return for the series’ ninth and final season.

These great characters will be joined by Javicia Leslie, who will be returning to the Arrowverse as a very different version of her Batwoman character in the form of The Red Death, a version of Batwoman with speed powers and an evil personality.

That’s a lot to take in all at once, so let’s break it down, character-by-character.

Nicole Maines as Nia Nal Dreamer on SupergirlFirst up, Nicole Maines returning as Dreamer is fantastic news, as she came into the Supergirl series in season 4 and exploded with fan popularity, becoming a mainstay of the series for three seasons, and a member of the Superfriends team, led by Supergirl. As a fellow reporter, she’ll most likely find comfort working alongside Iris West-Allen, breaking news stories while also taking down bad guys.

Batwoman The Red Death The FlashJavicia Leslie’s Batwoman was last seen taking down Marquis Jet, a new version of the Joker, before the series was canceled. But now, it seems like we are going to get something completely different, as she will come into The Flash as possibly the villain, or at least a villain, as she becomes The Red Death. This is a character that came about during the mega-hit miniseries, Dark Nights: Metal, where the evil Batmen of the negative multiverse came to destroy the positive multiverse, and one of those was The Red Death. This version was from Earth -52, and got his powers after forcing The Flash and himself into the Speed Force, causing them to become merged into one being. Will there be a similar explanation for how Ryan Wilder makes this turn? We’ll have to wait to find out.

Next up is the return of Wally West, aka Kid Flash. Wally was never given the proper respect that he deserved, as he was constantly overshadowed by Barry in the series. He was able to shine a bit more during his time on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, but that was short-lived. If The Red Death is to be a big villain for the season, leading the cavalcade of villains to come, it would make sense to bring back some of the main speedsters of the Arrowverse, and it’ll be great to see Wally one last time before it’s all said and done.

Ramsey Rosso, aka Bloodwork, was one of the best villains ever used on The Flash. Sendhil Ramamurthy managed to turn this potentially forgettable character into a compelling and sympathetic villain. Will we see him teaming up with Team Flash to take down The Red Death and the other villains, or will he join them in the ultimate villain move? Or perhaps, something totally unexpected will happen. The speculation is exciting!

David RamseyLast, but most certainly not least, is the return of David Ramsey as John Diggle. One of John’s final storylines was him giving up the Green Lantern ring that was bestowed upon him. This was disappointing to many, as we were anxiously waiting to see him finally take his mothers maiden name, and become the legendary Green Lantern John Stewart. But it seems we’ll most likely be seeing him do what he always does… show up when he’s most needed, and help save the day. Because that’s what heroes do.

Will we see others pop into the final season of The Flash? Hopefully. I’d love the chance to see Stephen Amell return as the Spectre, maybe get Jefferson Pierce or his daughters to show up, or even have Donald Faison pop up as Booster Gold again. There are so many great possibilities for cameos from the Arrowverse to show up in the final season of The Flash.

Let us know in the comments who you would love to see show up!

The ninth and final season of The Flash will premiere on Wednesday, February 8th at 8:00pm ET on The CW.

The CW has released a teaser trailer for the upcoming final season of their hit series The Flash.

The clip opens with Joe telling Barry how proud he is of him, followed by Barry waking from a nightmare and asking someone for help to save the world. We get flashes (pun intended) of Barry and Iris holding hands in bed, as well as a few different villains.

Check out the trailer below:

According to the official description, season 9 picks up one week following Team Flash’s epic battle against the Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh) in the season 8 finale, where they defeated him once and for all. Now, Barry and Iris are reconnecting and growing closer than ever before.

When a deadly group of Rogues descends on Central City led by a powerful new threat, the Flash and his team — Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker), Cecile Horton (Danielle Nicolet), Allegra Garcia (Kayla Compton), Chester P. Runk (Brandon McKnight), and Mark Blaine (Jon Cor) — work together to defeat that new threat… only to discover a deadly new adversary rising to challenge Barry’s heroic legacy. In their greatest battle yet, Barry and Team Flash will be pushed to their limits in order to save Central City one final time.

The shortened final season of The Flash, consisting of only 13 episodes and currently in production in Vancouver, will premiere Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the CW.

Stargirl will officially conclude its run on The CW with its third season.

The series, starring Brec Bassinger and Luke Wilson, is the latest in sweeping cancellations of the CW’s list of superhero shows in the past few months. Prior to this announcement, executive producers of The Flash – the longest-running spinoff of Arrow, that helped birth the Arrowverse – had announced that its upcoming season will be its last. Superman & Lois, recent Saturn Award winner, remains the only ongoing superhero shows on the network. This cancellation is also the latest of other shows that have met their end since the acquisition of The CW by Nexstar Media Group. The sad truth is there may be more on the way.

Stargirl – Cocreator and Star Reflect on The Series’ End And Its Mark

Executive Producer and Stargirl co-creator Geoff Johns released this statement on the cancellation:

Stargirl has always held a special place in my heart for many reasons. With all the brewing changes at the network, we were aware this was possibly the last season, so we wrote with that in mind and have delivered what I believe to be the best season of Stargirl yet, with complete creative closure. The cast and crew are extraordinary, and I’d like to thank them for helping me bring this series to life. Brec embodied Courtney in every way possible — with grace, strength and humor — exceeding my wildest expectations. I am grateful to WBTV and The CW for giving us a home to tell this story and to honor my beloved late sister, and I’m beyond thankful to the press and fans who have always championed us for three amazing seasons. Most series never get this far. We couldn’t be more proud of our show and the fan community it’s built!

Courtney Whitmore was the creation that Johns broke into comics with. Since that time, he has been the hand guiding famous DC properties like Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, JSA, and so on. His being the Executive Producer on Stargirl brought both validity and quality to the storylines. Lead actress Brec Bassinger, herself, offered this reaction to the news of the show coming to an end:

Getting to play Stargirl and be a part of the DC Universe has been the greatest honor, and I am so grateful for every moment of it. I would like to thank our fearless leader Geoff Johns, along with WBTV, The CW, the cast and crew of Stargirl, and of course, the fans. Thank you. This show will forever live in my heart.

The current season of Stargirl can be found on Wednesday nights on 8/7 Central on The CW.

Doom Patrol has cast Heroes and The Flash alum Sendhil Ramamurthy for its upcoming fourth season.

The actor has been cast in the role of “Mr. 104,” adapted from Jonathan Dubrovny aka Mr. 103. The original character first appeared in 1965’s Doom Patrol #98. Later known as Mr. 104, Dubrovny is a mentally-unstable biochemist who can change his body into any known element. The character’s description obtained by reliable sources is “a charming and mysterious man of many elements.” Cryptic, and yet on point.

Doom Patrol Expands Its Roster With Both A Hero… and Villain… Plus One?

Ramamurthy first burst onto the world stage with his breakout role as geneticist Dr. Mohinder Surresh on NBC’s Heroes for all four seasons. However, he has already made a splash in the DC landscape in the sixth season of The CW’s The Flash. At the advent of the graphic novel structure the show operates now, Sendhil played Caitlin Snow’s old colleague Dr. Ramsey Rosso who, desperate to avoid his mother’s fate, tried to use dark matter to arrest his fatal blood disease against Caitlin’s warnings.

He instead mutated into a blood-controlling metahuman menace known as Bloodwork, powerful enough to overwhelm Barry Allen in spite of The Speed Force. Although given an opportunity to escape Iron Heights after his defeat, he opted to remain in his cell to play the long game. Given his recent appearance in the canon comic tie-in, fans expected him to make an appearance in the final season of the season. However, this recent casting puts that possibility in doubt.

Also debuting this season on the show will be Casey Brinke aka Space Case, played by Madeline Zima, another Heroes alum. Like Marvel’s She-Hulk and Deadpool, this character will be able to break the fourth wall. Zima herself has also appeared in series like Californication and Betas, as well as films such as BombshellsPainkillersInsight, and Diary of A Spy.

Showrunner Jeremy Carver elaborates:

Casey is so beloved both by our writers on staff and by fans of Doom Patrol [in general. We]  finally found a way to bring her into the story in a way that feels wholly organic to us, even though to someone who’s never seen Doom Patrol, it might seem little bats… insane. To us, it fits perfectly! And it’s not just a cameo.

Catch the first two episodes of the fourth season of Doom Patrol on January 5, 2023, on HBO Max.

David Ramsey says the Green Lantern Corps may not be out of John Diggle’s future yet.

Ever since the series of finale of Arrow, John has been bouncing around the remaining Arrowverse shows to determine the nature of the alien box that fell out of the sky. Although it seems Diggle has left this mystery behind, David says differently.

It’s not [resolved. When Eric Wallace] called me, showrunner of The Flash, and he had a pitch for me to end the saga, the Green Lantern Saga, within the Arrowverse. The reason why he did is because the Arrowverse was ending, right? It’s gonna end with Flash and all the other shows would go.

We knew, not at the time, I knew but you didn’t know yet, that Todd [Helbing] was going to reveal in Superman & Lois that the Superman & Lois-verse, if you will, exists on another planet, on a different Earth, and these characters are still alive.

The idea is perhaps there’s a world where we can explore the Flash, or maybe just Barry Allen. Maybe he is Flash, maybe he isn’t. Is Oliver Queen alive? Maybe he is. Maybe the ring is still there.

David As Green Lantern – Journey Thus Far And Could It Happen?

From SupergirlThe FlashDC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and to Batwoman, Diggle has been on a two-year journey to every scientific mind he has worked with. Comic book fans have been clamoring for this to be John – whose stepfather has the surname “Stewart” – going on to becoming the CW’s Green Lantern. Besides that tease, The Flash of Earth-90 (John Wesley Shipp) had seen Diggle in “Elseworlds” and wondered why he wasn’t wearing his ring.

What has also driven this quest is the continuous mental attacks from an unknown voice repetitiously telling him “Worlds await.” However, it was not until he circled back to The Flash, turning to the incarcerated Reverse-Flash (Tom Cavanaugh), that he finally got answers. In “The Man In The Yellow Tie,” Eobard Thawne, with future knowledge, revealed this extraterrestrial box may only open if John wills it to. When this mindset finally opened the box, Diggle was bombarded with galactic imagery of what he could become, but ultimately rejected whatever this “offer” was. With the box seemingly transported back to its point of origin, Diggle resolved to get back to his family, since none of those realities he’d witnessed revealed he would.

Again, it’s not over. Rather, it’s just beginning.

Now that it has been established that Superman & Lois is not part of the slowly dying Arrowverse, Ramsey suggests this revelation is a whole new beginning:

Superman & Lois allows us to reboot the Arrowverse in a way that we didn’t really think [before. When Todd initially revealed that, there were a lot of moans and groans about “Oh, we’re no longer in the Arrowverse.” I think it was smart. It was [Greg] Berlanti’s brainchild and I think it was smart because it allows us to grow outside of the Arrowverse, which we weren’t allowed to do.

So, to answer your question is that the ring is still around. It exists in Superman & Lois, it’s been denied in the same way it was in the Arrowverse, but [John Diggle] didn’t go through the same thing.

Ramsey has directed two episodes of the series thus far, first appearing last year as Diggle and acknowledging Superman had worked with Oliver. By doing so he acknowledges that there is a Green Arrow in that dimension. If Oliver, indeed, is not dead, then it opens the door for Stephen Amell to perhaps play the role that made him famous.

Diggle returned in the second season finale to approach John Henry Irons (Wole Parks) with a request to help him go after Intergang. Could this also lead this version of John Diggle on the path to becoming Green Lantern? Will the box fall out of the sky on this world and present the same offer to Diggle? Will John make a different choice? Time will tell.

The third season of Superman & Lois has recently begun filming in Vancouver, and is set to premiere in January 2023 on The CW.

The Flash has heard its final starting gun on The CW.

Showrunner Eric Wallace has confirmed that the long-running – and remaining – Arrowverse spinoff will end with its ninth season. This is his official statement:

Nine seasons! Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor, and [spectacle. And] now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race. So many amazing people have given their talents, time, and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers, and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.

Eric Pulls The Plug On “The Flash” – How Will It End? How Did It Begin?

This announcement contradicts his earlier statements when the final fate of the show was still in question. Months earlier, with regards to where the series stood in light of fellow Arrowverse spinoff DC’s Legends of Tomorrow was cancelled, Wallace had been contemplative.

I don’t want the audience to get caught with a cliffhanger that doesn’t get resolved or anything like [that. I] want to make sure that we complete the journey that Barry, Iris, and Team Flash have been [on. In] between seasons 8 and 9, I’m going to get a bit more of a chance to get a little bit of a breather to think about where do I really want to send these characters off emotionally as people and as human beings? What do I want their final goodbyes to this wonderful, loyal audience to be?

The recent announcement of the final season comes also on the heels of actress Candice Patton, who plays Iris West-Allen, shedding light on the inequity on the set and mistreatment of actors of color on the show. Further, it is mistreatment that she laid at Wallace’s feet as showrunner. However, at this point any link between these allegations and the show’s cancellation is pure speculation.

Grant Gustin, who plays Barry Allen, first appeared in the second season episode of Arrow entitled “The Scientist,” and was meant to debut as the Scarlet Speedster on the series. However, the creative decision was made to reserve that debut for the first of many spinoff series to share the continuity of Oliver Queen’s world.

Premiering in the fall of 2014, The Flash took the CW by storm every Tuesday night – and later Wednesday night – for eight seasons. Its crossover with Arrow that same year was the first time two primetime superhero shows shared a two-night event. The Arrowverse was joined by both Legends and later Supergirl, which jumped from CBS to The CW for its second season.

It was also through the series concepts such as The Multiverse were introduced, and became the centerpiece of the massive 2018 crossover event “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” based on the massive DC Comics event by Marv Wolfman and the late George Perez. It also officially made Black Lightning an official part of the Arrowverse until its cancellation. Arrow had its season finale in the aftermath of “Crisis.” Supergirl ended its run with six seasons in the can in 2021.

The show has had numerous cast changes in recent years, with the departure of Carlos Valdes and Tom Cavanaugh, who were replaced by Brandon T. McKnight and Kayla Compton

Season Eight -shortened to 18 episodes from 23 – concluded with the final defeat of Barry’s longtime nemesis, Eobard Thawne aka The Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanaugh), the possible resurrection of Frost (Danielle Panabaker) went wrong, and the notion that Eobard Thawne’s replacement may be chosen soon by “The Dark Forces.” Fans have long speculated – and hoped – that the final fate of The Fastest Man Alive would book end his original chronicled disappearance in the pilot. With so many changes over the course of the the series, while leaving open the possibility of surprise, what can Wallace and company have in store for Team Flash and the West-Allen family?

Gustin, himself, along with Panabaker took to their Instagram accounts with a response of this announcement.

The series is slated to return for its final season  in early 2023.
