We finally have a new Sweet Tooth trailer! Gus and the gang are back for a second season, and judging by the trailer, it looks like Gus is stepping up, ready to fight for his fellow mutants. Gus may have lost his freedom in season 1, but he gained a close relationship with some of his fellow hybrids. And even though Abbot may have captured them, they are not alone. In the second season, they will fight back and stop the experiments, even if it’s the last thing they do! Looks like Gus is growing up!

The adaption of the Jeff Lemire’s Vertigo comic was a surprise hit for Netflix when it debuted in 2021. Yes, we’ve had to wait a while, and there has been a lot of shake up at DC since, especially in the film and television mediums, but here’s hoping the fans return to see the next chapter of this post-apocalyptic saga. DMZ may be done, and Y: the Last Man may be cancelled, but Sandman and Sweet Tooth are still going strong. It seems like Netflix knows how to adapt these adult stories for the small screen, and given all the action we see in this new Sweet Tooth trailer, we are in for another incredible season of television.

The cast of season 2 includes :

  • Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd
  • Christian Convery as Gus
  • Adeel Akhtar as Dr Aditya Singh
  • Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh
  • Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear
  • Dania Ramirez as Aimee Eden
  • Neil Sandilands as General Douglas Abbot
  • Marlon Williams as Johnny Abbot
  • Naledi Murray as Wendy
  • James Brolin as the Narrator

And the best thing? We don’t have to wait that long! All eight episodes of season two will drop on April 27!  I will be watching! Mark your calendars and check out the explosive trailer below!

Produced by Team Downey and writer/director Jim Mickle, and based on the comics from DC, Sweet Tooth: The Complete First Season, arrives on Blu-Ray and DVD on October 11, 2022, from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Sweet Tooth: The Complete First Season features all eight heartfelt episodes and will be available on Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Warner Archive Collection. Warner Archive Blu-ray and DVD releases are easily found at www.warnerarchive.com and on your favorite online retailer sites. The end of our world is the beginning of his. Ten years ago “The Great Crumble” wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids — babies born part human, part animal. Unsure if hybrids are the cause or result of the virus, many humans fear and hunt them. After a decade of living safely in his secluded forest home, a sheltered hybrid deer-boy named Gus unexpectedly befriends a wandering loner named Jepperd. Together Gus and the Big Man set out on an extraordinary adventure across what’s left of America in search of answers — about Gus’s origins, Jepperd’s past, and the true meaning of home. But their story is full of unexpected allies and enemies, and Gus quickly learns the lush, dangerous world outside the forest is more complex than he ever could have imagined.

Sweet Tooth: The Complete First Season stars Christian Convery as Gus, Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd, Adeel Akhtar as Dr. Aditya Singh, Aliza Vellani as Rani Singh, Stefania LaVie Owen as Bear, Dania Ramirez as Aimee and voice-over narration by James Brolin.

Based on the DC comic book series by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth is executive produced by Jim Mickle, Robert Downey, Jr., Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell, and Linda Moran.

During DC FanDome this year, Sweet Tooth himself, Christian Convery, stopped by for a Q&A about the hit Netflix series, and teased some of what we can expect from season two. In the video, Convery talks about shooting in New Zealand (“the nature is so spectacular and extravagant“), his favorite DC heroes, animatronic ears, and what he hopes for Gus and his fellow hybrids in Season 2.

Last time we saw Gus, the deer-boy hybrid on the post-apocalyptic adventure series Sweet Tooth, he had been captured by the Last Men and detained with the other hybrids while Tommy (Nonso Anozie) and Aimee (Dania Ramirez) were looking for a way to rescue them. So, season two will have to pick up where this story left off, with the hybrids fighting for freedom in the midst of the post-apocalyptic pandemic.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in season one, Bear had managed to track down Gus’s mother despite the fact she was thought to be dead. It turns out she was exiled to Alaska – where the sickness is thought to have started.

Will they travel up North to find her? Now that we know we’re getting a second season, we don’t have to wait too long to find out those poor adorable hybrids’ fate.

Based on the comic by Jeff Lemire, Sweet Tooth will return for eight hour-long episodes for Season 2. The first season is currently available to stream on Netflix, however no release date has been revealed yet.

Swamp Thing may have a new avatar, but DC Black Label has other ideas with the previous one.

Dr. Alec Holland, who held the title of Swamp Thing, returns in an upcoming miniseries Swamp Thing: Green Hell.

Swamp Thing: Green Hell – What to Expect And The Swampy Line of Succession

It should be noted that currently that Alec Holland has relinquished the role of avatar in the current 10-issue The Swamp Thing miniseries under unknown circumstances. The current muckman is medical student Levi Kamei, which was also Holland’s most recent cameo as he passed the torch before passing on to another plane of existence.

Green Hell, a 3-part saga by Sweet Tooth scribe Jeff Lemire and artist Doug Mahnke, is separate from the current continuity and described as a “gory, gruesome, monster mash.” With a penciller regarded by the publisher as “one of the greatest artists in modern DC history,” and co-creator of the zombified Black Lantern Corps, Jeff can definitely back up that description with gusto.

The story takes place on a dystopian Earth where human survivors reside on a mountain atop a never-ending ocean of floodwater. Lemire  could be topical in this story if he labels the cause as the arctic finally melting due to climate change, but without further detail it is speculation at this point. Regardless, humanity is now the pariah of the Parliaments of Green, Red, and The Rot for their failure to care for the planet. To that end, the avatar summoned by their combined powers is described as “one of the most horrific monsters to ever stalk the surface of this forsaken planet.” As for Holland himself, he arrives after being apparently dead for decades. Further, it is not clear whether he will be defending humanity as Swamp Thing, or as this new monstrous executioner that resembles Swamp Thing.

Cocreators Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson first chronicled Alec Holland’s tragic tale in 1972’s Swamp Thing #1. The creator of a bio-restorative formula funded by the government, Holland was attacked in his Florida home by spies and murdered by explosives in his lab. The original concept was the burning formula on his body mingled with the swamp waters he ran towards outside. The end result was a muck-encrusted mockery of a man whose life became one of horror and monsters. When Wein personally hired Alan Moore onto the book, he turned the origin on its ear, bringing in the supernatural elements fans are familiar with and revealed Alec Holland was, indeed, dead, and this Swamp Thing was “a plant that thinks it’s a man.” From there, it was established the Parliament of The Green bestowed the role of Swamp Thing several times before Holland, including making  Alex Olsen, the original Swamp Thing from House of Secrets #92  canon.  Holland himself was indeed a candidate, but the formula on his body had blocked the change, so the next best thing was a Swamp Thing with Holland’s memories and personality, but just a construct. In the early 2000s miniseries, Brightest Day, writer Geoff Johns took advantage of the opportunity to resurrect Holland and make him the one, true Swamp Thing and dispatch his then-corrupted doppelganger. Scott Snyder then took it from there in his Swamp Thing title for The New 52, which became one of the highlights of that part of DC. He also took a page from the Green Lantern universe and created the other elemental parliaments in Green Hell, even designating Holland’s nemesis Anton Arcane as The Rot’s avatar. Swamp Thing has bounced around several times since that run, even written in a miniseries one more time by Len Wein before his death.

The first 48-page issue of Swamp Thing: Green Hell is set to debut December 28th with cover variants by Christian Ward and Francesco Fancavilla.

Positives

Netflix has launched Sweet Tooth Season One, which adapts Jeff Lemire’s comic series for DC’s Vertigo imprint (and reprinted under DC Black Label). Like many TV adaptations, the story is not exactly the same as Lemire’s comic book, but starts with the same basic premise. This is a drawback for those who would have preferred a strictly faithful adaptation, but it does a number of benefits.

First off, even though the basic premise is the same, and many of the same story beats are carried over, the writers can surprise viewers by diverging from the established story. The TV series doesn’t have to follow the exact path laid out by the comic. Knowing exactly what’s coming can rob the story of the ability to build suspense.

Also, the overall tone of the series is a bit lighter. This makes it more appealing to a wider audience. And Lemire has stated, “Jim [Mickle] felt, and I agreed, that if we were going to do a post-apocalyptic thing on TV, you needed to find a new angle on it. So, Sweet Tooth takes a somewhat fresh approach to Lemire’s dystopian future.

That future is much brighter and colourful than depicted in Lemire’s stark, artwork. We see a lot of green open spaces as nature reasserts itself. And there is an optimistic thread in the series. The hybrid children are implied to be the future of humanity – provided they can survive long to create that future. The world of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth could almost be characterized as Stephen King’s The Stand, reworked as a Disney movie.

Positives Cont.

The idea of a pandemic wiping out much of the world’s population seems rather apropos given current events. So, an brighter, optimistic story is a refreshing break from the more serious real world implications of Covid-19.

Another difference from the comics is that the story isn’t focused as much on Gus. He’s still the central figure, but we see more of the supporting cast. Other characters have their own stories apart from Gus. Presumably, these threads will cross over with Gus’ story in later seasons, but for now, they serve to illuminate the wider world Gus lives in.

Some great choices have been made in the casting of this series. In keeping with the lighter tone of the story, Christian Convery seems to have been selected for maximum cuteness, and chipper personality. His Gus is starkly different than the emaciated figure drawn by Lemire in the comic. Convery is quite the talented actor, and has great emotional range. He can make viewers laugh in Gus’ lighter moments and sympathize with his tragedies.

Nonso Anozie plays Tommy Jeppard, or as Gus calls him, “Big Man”. Some viewers may have concerns about a Black actor being cast for a character that was White in the comics. However, I don’t feel that there was anything about the character that marks him as having to be any specific ethnicity. And in any case, his backstory appears to have been completely rewritten anyway. Anozie does a brilliant job of capturing the gruff, angry loner who comes to care for the young boy that fate has saddled him with.

Negatives

There isn’t much to complain about in this Sweet Tooth Season One. I have to admit though that the scenes without Gus are often not as engaging. I wouldn’t go so far as to say they are boring, but I sometimes wished that they’d hurry up and get back to Gus and Jeppard.

Also, for those who wanted an adaptation that had the same tone as the comic and followed the same basic story, you might find this show disappointing. However, I do urge you to give it a try anyway. You might actually enjoy it as much as you did the original, despite the differences.

Verdict

Sweet Tooth Season One may have taken a chance by changing the tone of Jeff Lemire’s comic, but that chance has definitely paid off. Sweet Tooth is an engaging and charming series. And I look forward to seeing the story progress through future seasons.
