Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×07: Clark tries to plan a normal date without any Superman problems but gets interrupted when Mr. Mxyzptlk sweeps him, Jimmy, and Lois into a high-stakes, multiverse-hopping chase.

Positives

Lois and Clark finally have a date night to themselves. With this being their first date, Clark is doing everything he can to plan it to perfection. However, things go sideways quickly when Mr. Mxyzptlk, a powerful being from an alternate dimension, shows up. Claiming to need Superman’s help, the two are soon on an adventure across the multiverse. But there is more to Mxyzptlk’s story than it seems.

Lois and Jimmy have a weird encounter of their own when they meet alternate versions of themselves from the multiverse. Known as the Council of Lois, these members are versions of Lois and Jimmy throughout the multiverse tasked with protecting it from Mxyzptlk and stopping him, no matter the cost. Lois seems a bit cautious and untrusting meeting her alternate selves–and it seems that she has a good reason.

All of this comes with plenty of comedy included with the action, as I’ve come to expect with My Adventures With Superman. Even Mr. Mxyzptlk, who I was familiar with from the previous animated series, was amazing here. I especially liked the easter egg callback to the hat from the animated series. This show is different, yet it pays respects to its roots with how it portrays all of its characters so far.

Negatives

I have no negatives about this episode. It’s just pure goodness.

Verdict

Overall, I thought My Adventures With Superman 1×07 was a great episode that had plenty of easter eggs to keep an eye out for. One thing that stands out to me is the file that Lois finds on Superman. When she opens it, a lot is revealed that may change her relationship with Clark. But only time will tell.

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×06: When Jimmy gets kidnapped, it’s up to Lois and Clark to save him – but rescuing Jimmy will lead them into danger as they deal with mad scientists, military secrets, and relationship woes.

Positives

This episode picks up where the previous one leaves off — with Lois angry at Clark for not revealing his secret identity as Superman. However, while searching for Jimmy in the forest, where he’s seemingly disappeared, Clark ends up revealing the truth to Lois. Clark’s feelings are put to the test as he finds himself attacked by unknown weaponry, and, for some unknown reason, he’s depowered.

Jimmy’s situation seems even worse when his kidnappers reveal themselves. Monsieur Mallah and the Brain make their appearance, and I really enjoyed it. Expecting to die, Jimmy reveals how he feels betrayed by Lois and Clark, and he ends up befriending Mallah and Brain!

Negatives

I don’t have any complaints about this episode. The action was great and the story itself was pretty darn good. Usually, a powerful character like Superman is depowered for no reason in an episode or two to humanize him in a way. Here, it’s different seeing that this particular Superman is still learning his powers and doesn’t know how invulnerable he is yet. It makes his fights, particularly in this episode, that much more interesting as a character.

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×06 was a good episode that was also pretty funny. If anything, it shows the bond between Lois, Clark, and Jimmy, and the lengths these friends will go to help each other. Often times, in the comics and shows I’ve seen, Jimmy is seen as a side character or an afterthought that you don’t see until the last few pages. I’m glad that, in this show, Jimmy is finally getting some time to shine, which the character rightly deserves.

Score: 5/5

Josie Campbell, producer of the new animated series My Adventures With Superman, recently revealed that the series was asked by WB to use lesser-known villains, instead of bigger baddies like Lex Luthor.

During an interview with The Comics Cube (via The Direct), Campbell said that classic villains like Brainiac, General Zod, and Lex Luthor were restricted from use in the first season.

“Some of it was… Warner Bros… and I think it was a good note,” she said. “Like our big execs on Warner Brothers were like, ‘Well, these are the big hitters that everybody’s seen and everybody’s expecting. And we’ve seen this a million times, so we want your twists on things.'”

Campbell continued, “And I think it was Sam Register and Audrey Diehl, who were doing notes with us, were like, ‘These characters take up the whole screen. They kind of suck the air out because they’re so famous, and there’s so many expectations, so hold off on them. Hold off on these characters, and build the story how you see fit.'”

They did manage to at least get a tease of Brainiac and Zod in the season one finale, which should mean more of these characters in the next season, which is exciting.

My Adventures With Superman is currently available to watch on Max and stars Jack Quaid as Clark Kent/Superman, Alice Lee as Lois Lane, and Ishmel Sahid as Jimmy Olsen.

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×05: Lois uncovers a secret in Metropolis and is determined to get to the truth; Superman tracks down dangerous weapons in the city and finds himself in the crosshairs of mysterious organization Task Force X.

Positives

This was a pretty hilarious episode and is a reminder of the lengths Lois will go to accomplish her goals. Now convinced that Clark Kent is Superman, Lois is determined to make him admit this secret at all costs, including handcuffing herself to Superman! This tactic, of course, backfires and places Lois in danger with Superman having to rescue her. Also, an unknown threat is kidnapping criminals around Metropolis, forcing Superman to act. This culminates in the Man of Steel having to face off against one of the members of Task Force X.

While Lois and Clark were having their issues, Jimmy Olsen seems to be having problems of his own. Finding out that his site, which is dedicated to Superman and stories of the unknown, was getting roasted online by someone, Jimmy sets out to find the culprit. However, it’s closer than he thinks when he discovers it’s fellow reporter Steve. This turns out to be way more hilarious than I could have imagined as these two end up on assignment together with Jimmy messaging Lois and Clark trying to get away.

Negatives

If I have to make a complaint about something in this episode, it has to be how quickly Lois finds out about Superman’s secret identity. In other versions of the Lois and Clark story, it has happened of course, but usually the reveal takes more time to come to fruition. This is the first show I’ve seen go directly for the identity reveal in the first season — especially so early in it. However, I’ve liked everything I’ve seen so far and that’s made me trust the writers and the direction they’re taking.

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×05 was a great episode that shows how powerful, and yet how selfless, Superman really is. His encounter with Task Force X shows this when he has to save a bus full of kids while being attacked at the same time. His struggles with Task Force X and this mysterious General seem to be the ongoing story for this season and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Score: 4.5/5

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×04: Clark, Lois, and Jimmy cover a glitzy gala hosted by tech-billionaire Dr. Ivo, but while Clark and Lois wonder if this counts as a date, Ivo unleashes his newest invention: a creation that can bring down Superman.

Positives

This episode shows how fast Lois, Clark, and Jimmy are establishing themselves in Metropolis as reporters. Although still just interns, Perry assigns them the gala event hosted by Dr. Ivo, a billionaire tech genius who is apparently going broke. Needing to pay back investors and save his company, Ivo premieres the Parasite suit during the event. When the suit and Dr. Ivo go crazy, Superman arrives to save the day.

This episode also shows that Lois and Jimmy are more than just side characters, and the duo get their hands dirty once again, helping Superman by sabotaging Dr. Ivo’s tech so Superman could stop him once and for all. I hope this is something that’s repeated in future episodes, especially with Jimmy, who I feel will get his proper chance to shine as a character in this series.

Negatives

I must admit, my only complaint at first was the look of this new version of Parasite — I wasn’t a fan of the idea of the Parasite being a suit. However, once I saw it in action, I changed my mind. Instead of copying Superman’s powers like the animated series of the 90’s, this version gets larger, more armored, and more powerful.

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×04 is a good episode that leaves plenty to wonder about for the next one. Lois and Clark have a conversation about their relationship, while Lois also discovers something about Superman that could change her investigation entirely. Ivo ends up badly damaged in the battle and taken into custody, but I doubt it’ll be the last time we’ll see him.

Score: 4/5

Summary

Gotham City’s most feared gangsters are being systematically eliminated, and the assumed blame is falling on the Caped Crusader. But prowling the Gotham night is a shadowy new villain, the Phantasm, a sinister figure with some link to Batman’s past. Can the Dark Knight elude the police, capture the Phantasm and clear his own name? Unmasking the Phantasm is just one of the twists in this dazzling animated feature, which provides new revelations about Batman’s past, his archrival the Joker, and Batman’s most grueling battle ever — the choice between his love for a beautiful woman and his vow to be the defender of right.

Positives

There are so many great things to say about Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, so many that I’ll probably forget some. So, let’s start with the two things we get right off the bat (pun intended) — the score and the animation.

While the score for Batman: The Animated Series has always been top tier, composer Shirley Walker kicked it up a notch for this theatrical film by making it much more operatic. This gave the score a far more grandiose feel, which felt right at home on the big screen. It helped to create the dark and brooding atmosphere so well known with the Dark Knight, but in a bigger way.

Then there’s the animation. For those of you who know, Batman: The Animated Series was a unique case of animation style, where they painted their backgrounds on black paper to make the scenes darker, and that was carried forward into this film as well. Even though it’s 30 years old, the animation is simply incredible, and the new 4K version makes it all pop even more. It’s just stunning to look at.

Positives Cont’d

Alright, let’s get into the film itself now. Batman: The Animated Series, and therefore Mask of the Phantasm, is the greatest version of Batman ever put on screen. He embodies everything the comic book version of Batman has built, and did so right from the beginning. And in this film, we get to dive deeper into who this character really is and what motivates him.

We see Bruce’s early days as a budding vigilante, ten years prior to where we see him in the movie, wearing just an all-black outfit with a black coat and ski mask. He does, however, have one thing that has become a staple in Batman’s wardrobe — the utility belt. And we even get a glimpse of a young Bullock when he was still a patrol officer.

I loved getting to see the early side of Bruce, without getting the death of his parents, yet again. A large portion of this story is spent in the past, setting up Bruce’s relationship with Andrea Beaumont and what it meant to him, and for his future, to lose her the way he did. She was the one that got away. I’m sure many of you out there know just what that feels like, but for Bruce, it sent him on a path, a path toward being the vigilante hero we all know him to be.

He was completely ready to give up his quest for vengeance for a happy future with her, which is funny because he barely gave her the time of day at first. He showed no real interest in Andrea until she takes him down with a martial arts move. This is where he sees that there’s so much more to her than all these other women that surround him. She’s a strong, capable woman, and we all know that’s Bruce’s type — Selina Kyle, Talia al Ghul, even Wonder Woman occasionally. But when she leaves him, this pushes him deeper into the darkness, and he spends the next decade as Batman before he sees her again.

His willingness to give it all up shows how deeply he just wants to be loved and to love someone in return. We even get a heartbreaking scene where he begs his dead parents to let him break his promise to them so he can finally have some joy in his life. He’s been holding onto an incredible amount of guilt all these years, and his subconscious makes it very difficult for him to move forward in any way. This is one of the best displays I’ve ever seen for why he continues to do what he does, and why none of his relationships ever seem to work out.

Positives Cont’d

While I absolutely love the past storyline in this film, it’s the story structure that really makes it work. The cutting back and forth at key moments to give present day scenes more context was a perfect way to tell this story. One of my favorite moments to do this was toward the beginning of the film, where Bruce is at a party and a woman comes up to him and throws a drink in his face, saying that he essentially led her on and then ghosted her. This woman has red hair and blue eyes. Right after that scene, we are introduced to Andrea Beaumont in a past scene and we see that she too has red hair and blue eyes. This tells me that Bruce was attempting to recreate what he lost after she left, to no success. It’s a very small detail, but one that really fascinated me upon my rewatch of the film.

One other thing I love about Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is how the mob plays a major role in the story, something most on-screen Batman tales fail to utilize, though the recent Matt Reeves film, The Batman, did a great job with that. In this, Batman is being blamed for the mob murders perpetrated by The Phantasm, and we get a major tie-in with the mob, Andrea’s father, and even The Joker. We also get a small peek into Joker’s past because of this, and I thought that was really intriguing.

I would also be remiss if I failed to talk about the stellar voice acting throughout this film. Kevin Conroy shines as Batman/Bruce Wayne, as he always does. He will forever be the extremely high bar set for anyone else voicing the character. The way he is able to show such complex emotion just through his voice is simply incredible and shows how much art and skill there is in being a true voice-over artist. He is joined in this by Dana Delany as Andrea Beaumont and she does such a wonderful job, especially as she came into this never having done any voice-over work before. And, of course, Mark Hamill is superb as The Joker.

Negatives

I honestly have no real negatives about this movie. I love it so much. But if I had to list anything, I would say that the lack of resolution to what happens to The Joker would be one. We see Andrea take him in a cloud of mist to presumably kill him, and Batman doesn’t stop her. So she’s gone with Joker and we never know what happens to him, leaving the audience to assume she finished the job.

However, three years after the film, DC released the comic book issue Batman & Robin Adventures Annual #1, which explains what happens after she leaves with Joker. It’s a fascinating issue to read, and that part is just the beginning, so go check it out if you want more Phantasm.

Special Features

The 4K Blu-ray includes three special features: a 4×3 version of the film, the episode of Justice League Unlimited titled “Epilogue”, and the short documentary Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight.

4×3 Version – It was really cool to see them include this version, as the series was all done in 4×3. You actually get to see more of the screen with this, as the widescreen just cuts the top and bottom off of this version. So, if you want to enjoy more of the amazing art that is the animation of this film, check out this version.

“Epilogue” from Justice League Unlimited – This is one of my favorite episodes of JLU, and for multiple reasons. This episode serves, as the name suggests, as an epilogue to both Batman Beyond and Mask of the Phantasm. The events that take place show that she still cares about him after all these years.

It also has one of the most heartbreaking moments in all of Batman history with Batman and Ten from the Royal Flush Gang. If you haven’t seen it, you need to watch it.

Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight Documentary – This was an incredible tribute to the man who voiced Batman for three decades, the man who many of us still hear in our heads anytime we read a Batman comic, Kevin Conroy. The documentary included many great people who all praised Kevin’s work as the Dark Knight. And we even got some interview footage of Kevin himself, which was absolutely wonderful to see.

Verdict

For me personally, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is the best Batman film ever made. It is an absolute gem and a classic that everyone who is even slightly a fan of this character needs to watch. And with the documentary about Kevin Conroy included on the Blu-ray, this is a must buy for all fans. So, do yourself a favor and pick this up today!!

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×03: Lois wants to interview Superman and Clark must figure out how to help her while protecting his secret identity. Meanwhile, criminal ring INTERGANG gets their hands on unstable weapons, and a mysterious organization plots in the shadows.

Positives

Lois Lane’s determination to get an interview with Superman is one of the best parts of this episode and creates some amazingly humorous moments, especially considering the fact that she’s working right next to him as Clark Kent! It’s funny seeing Clark attempting to help Lois snag this interview, all the while trying to keep his secret hidden.

Intergang makes an appearance, but rather than being a mafia-type organization, they seem to be a bunch of teenagers who happen to have some very powerful weaponry. We don’t know yet how or when these teens got these weapons, but they’re enough to give Superman some problems.

Negatives

I have no complaints about this episode.

Verdict

Overall, I thought My Adventures With Superman 1×03 was a great episode, with plenty of action and some funny scenes throughout. This version of Lois and Jimmy are slowly becoming some of my favorite iterations of their characters. It seems that they might be going the route of Superman’s secret being revealed earlier in this season than in previous shows before. If they do go that route, I’m eager to see how the story goes with Lois, Jimmy, and Clark, and what it means for their friendship. At the end of the episode, Intergang seems to meet with someone who has plans for Superman. Hopefully, this will be revealed in the next episode.

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×02: Clark Kent goes back to the Kent farm to find answers about his true heritage. Meanwhile, Lois and Jimmy track down some tech thieves.

Positives

This episode shows how My Adventures With Superman isn’t afraid to be different. Aside from the obvious anime-inspired art style, the backstory of these characters is surprisingly different from what we have known, including Superman. In this case, I found it interesting that Clark isn’t able to understand the Kryptonian language, unlike in other shows. And it also seems there may be a nefarious purpose behind his arrival– will they explore that later, perhaps?

Negatives

I have to admit, I wasn’t a fan of this particular introduction of Livewire. It seems that a few of Superman’s enemies who traditionally have powers will instead have their powers via technology like Livewire does in this episode. However, with it being only the first season, I’m sure we’ll see some character development, even with Superman’s enemies, so maybe she’ll have some actual powers in future episodes.

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×02 was an overall really good episode that will definitely lead to future consequences. Lois seems more determined than ever to get an interview with Superman, while Clark is only interested in getting closer to Lois. Also, it seems that a government organization has been introduced as well–and they make themselves known to Livewire. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Summary

My Adventures With Superman 1×01: Clark Kent and his best friend Jimmy Olsen navigate their first day through their internship at the Daily Planet. Meeting the beautiful and fearless Lois Lane, the trio fast develop a friendship–all while trying to survive being destroyed by robots!

Positives

I must admit, I had my reservations about this show, but that was mainly due in part to my feelings about Superman: The Animated Series, which still resonates with me to this day. However, My Adventures With Superman quickly shows you just how different it is, but in a good way.

The animation style is great, and the introduction of Jimmy and Lois don’t feel forced, even though it was the first episode. Jack Quaid seems to be a great choice for the voice of Superman as you can tell he’s a young man still trying to figure out this entire destiny of being a hero. Still testing the limits of his powers and learning how they work is a completely new avenue for this show to explore, and I’m eager to see where it goes.

Negatives

I have no issues with this episode at all. Top notch premiere!

Verdict

My Adventures With Superman 1×01 was a great episode and I can’t wait to see the next. I love the dynamic between Lois, Clark, and Jimmy and the fact that they’re all interns at the Daily Planet. This show is really doing everything from the ground up and I’m sure its going to leave us with plenty of room for fantastic storytelling.
